Salt burn makes me worry for poor kids at ‘posh’ unis.

Im beginning to think certain Universities have much wealthier students on average and a kid from a poorer background would have a hard time perhaps ? Oliver in Saltburn was almost ostracised. Dc is looking at Exeter and Bath as favs. Not going to have any of the spending money, nice things from home the private school kids there will have I’m guessing. Will they have a hard time and be excluded in any way do you think. Horrible to think that as pretty shy and socially awkward anyway 🥹.

you own a farm Op
You’re hardly living on a deprived council estate

I don’t. Would be nice though I suppose. I think there are people in both town and country side on low incomes to be fair.

Oliver was a total weirdo though.

I was 6 years old at the time. A million years ago 🤣. Pmd cos I think you’ve mistaken me for someone else and I was gonna let you know that by giving you a bit more context. This isn’t the point of the thread though. I had some hang ups about poorer kid being left out and not being as sophisticated, confident or worldly but everyone’s been very reassuring that it’s misplaced. We only want our children to be happy if possible don’t we after all.

Nchanged

my son is about to finish first year at Exeter doing physics so I will tell you his experience

in his halls he was the only state school student. He was the only one doing a science degree

they do way more things than him but in reality his course is full on and he doesn’t have time

they drink a lot more and seem quite laidback, possible because not meal planning and worrying about money

when you join your societies you meet a wide range of people and more likely to make your friends on course/societies

Was it one of the self catering halls? Do you mind mentioning which one? My child is thinking of self catering at Exeter. Is the food any good?

If you're basing your worries on what happens in the film, you should be more worried about the rich kids 😂

Pippetypoppity · 20/05/2024 07:37

If you replied to this post then this thank you is for you. I really appreciate you taking the time to add your thoughts. It’s been fascinating. I’ve learned a great deal. Overall they have been very reassuring - with a few interesting and helpful caveats along the way.
What has been really noteworthy I think too is the number of responses. People appear to care about this. Everyone wants kids from all walks of life to accept each other readily and learn from the experience. The sub text in all the posts was that this is the ideal. If we are a representative sample of the parents sending kids to Uni then they will at least have had the right values instilled at home. I guess we just have to let them go boldly and make the best of themselves - and hopefully bring out the best in others by doing so. Good luck to everyone starting new university careers. Good luck to all us mums watching from the sidelines too xxx

You do realise that 70% of students at Oxbridge are state educated so are in the majority.

You do realise that Satburn was a fictional account but if we want to go by Saltburn but if we want to use it as fact shouldn't the posh people be more worried about a sociopath, pyschopath state educated Oliver lying to them and infiltrating their family and killing them? 😂

I thought that too on reading this thread. 😀
Wasn’t Oliver a dreadful character !

Norma27 · 09/07/2025 17:43

My daughter is state school educated and now at Oxford. From a school that rarely sends anyone there. She is having an amazing time there. Most of her friends are very rich and privately educated but it hasn’t mattered.

Calliopespa · 13/07/2025 20:11

Don't feel concerned.

Its a movie that bears no resemblance to reality whatsoever. If there's elitism at Oxbridge, its academic not social - and has been that way for decades.

Circe7 · 13/07/2025 20:30

I went to Cambridge c.15 years ago and really don’t recognise the social elitism shown in films etc. from my experience.

I barely ever had a conversation about what school someone went to and couldn’t have said for sure for most people. The only people whom I heard talk about this were those who were proud of having gone to a failing state school or as part of diversity schemes. Most students were quite left wing - perhaps in a slightly champagne socialist idealistic way but it certainly precluded boasting about your family’s yacht / country pile / helicopter etc. Added to this there are a lot of international students and a lot who are neurodiverse or just quirky.

I maybe just didn’t move in the right circles but think the Saltburn type experience will be easily avoided at most universities.

Plus a lot of students from private schools or relatively privileged backgrounds are very normal and will have had all sorts of life experience between them.
