If you own a ranger rover

Is it on finance? Just wondering how many people actually buy then outright? They are my dream car and although I could finance a monthly payment I could never buy one outright! How much do you have to earn for that?! I’m on 89k for context

FIL owns his, I borrowed it for a weekend and although they may not be the most environmentally friendly way of getting around and take up a lot of space it was so comfortable and nice to drive, compared to my 10 year old hatch back.

A lot of RR drivers have long since paid of their mortgage. I'm sure there are those who go out on a crazy limb to buy one and cripple them self with finance payments and stuff, but you get idiots driving all sorts of cars. But there are those who drive a Range Rover because they just really like them and the cost of them isn't a consideration because you can comfortably afford one.

What I can't get my head around are parents taking out high finance on cute, brand new cars for their seventeen year olds. Like DDs friend who woke up to a new baby blue Mini on her 17th birthday when her parents were already financially struggling. This really is madness to me. Our DCs learned to drive in a nine year old VW that we bought for cash.

Yep. 100% agree.

Car finance is a great tool when you either desperately need it to just get you mobile, or when really don't need it at all but have much better ways to put your copious assets to use.

It's a terrible tool for those who just 'want'...

zingally · 14/05/2024 16:32

They are currently the most stolen car in the country, which would massively put me off.
Generally I tend to assume that MOST cars under the age of about 3 years are financed.

To all the people hating on RR. I bet if someone said they’d buy one for you, you would take it. I’ve owned a top of the range Kia and it was a very nice, solid car. Nowhere near a comparison to my top of the range, RR Autobiography (bought second hand). So many people hate RR because of the green eyed monster, seem more than happy for people to truck around in people carriers or a similarly built car as long as it didn’t come from JLR. My family need bigger cars as my husband is 6ft4 and doesn’t fit in the small cars safely and we have 2 children who need to have somewhere to put their legs in the back seat. SUV is a must and our SUV of choice is a RR.

You really don't get it do you? I loathe RRs and you couldn't give me one no, do you really not see that? I drive a fairly expensive car so it's got bugger all to do with money and everything to do with taste.

My husband and I must be awful people as we have matching range rovers, both red with matching number plates. We love them. Haters gonna hate, but how about in such a god awful world we stop judging other people and smile at the small things may make that person happy. I don’t buy designer clothing because I don’t care what clothes I wear but I also don’t buy the cheap crap that’s been made by kids in china!! I wonder how many people hating on range rovers purchase clothes from Shein or the other cheap knock off companies with very questionable human rights violations. 🤔

You're not awful people but by God that is so so cringeworthy.

What does hating 'on' RR mean? Surely it's just hating RR?

Purplebunnie · 14/05/2024 16:41

Had the Evoke as a courtesy car I'm 5'4 and I still banged my head getting in and out of it. Didn't like it at all

I'll stick to my outdated Freelander thank you

Yes I agree it's an evil temptation for some people that just paves the way for more financial nonsense. I'll never understand seeing very high end SUVs parked outside very, very modest houses. It's such a feckless way to use whatever money you have available to you.

No. Id never ever ever want one thank you. I'd sell it so quick and buy a skoda fabia...a better car and easier to park. I want a reliable car I can park.

Or worse when they buy the 17 year old a powerful car. Usually ends tragically.

I'm confused - are RRs the only car available that have somewhere for 2 children to put their legs? And we were given one as a courtesy car recently from my work; we didn't have a choice as it was delivered to the door and I spent a week absolutely mortified that it was in our driveway and couldn't bring myself to drive it. It's funny that you assume people are jealous; I felt the opposite about it and was embarrassed to drive it.
For the record we have a Skoda EV so not really the target market. But pleased to confirm it has somewhere for the kids legs.

AlpineMuesli · 14/05/2024 19:17

TBQH the default SUV in monied areas around London seems to be a Volvo CX90. RR aren’t really that popular.

Lonelycrab · 14/05/2024 21:14

^ which is also the size of a small house.

Brilliant for the ego of those inside, but pedestrians, cyclists or just people driving normal cars trying to find a parking spot they can fit into, no so much.

Peachy2005 · 14/05/2024 21:25

Oh lol @Heatherbell1978 - you just sparked a memory for me and now it makes sense in light of this thread.

A few years ago my handbrake failed on my RR Sport in our driveway (sadly not the only time!) and I hadn’t yet learned about Limp mode for getting it to the LR garage down the road myself. I had to get them to come to recover it with the towtruck (broke the motor on the winch but that’s another story). Anyway a few days later I was chatting with one of the neighbours and he said “we all thought it was being repossessed”! I couldn’t understand why the neighbours would jump to that conclusion but it makes sense now as people here are saying a lot of them are on finance! The cheeky bugger 🤣

[As a boring footnote: The next time the handbrake failed, the same towtruck guy came and said “I remember you, I got in big trouble for breaking the winch last time, that was my first week working there”. In the interim, he had learned about Limp mode so he didn’t have to winch the whole weight of the car, so I got him to show me how to do it myself in case it ever seizes up on a roundabout or something. Touch wood, hasn’t happened yet but only a matter of time!]

Totally agree, I'd be mortified if I had to drive one.

Yeah, hilarious that the poster whose kids have legs can't possibly use any other car than a fuck off massive tank to ferry the darlings around in.

Or the 6ft 4 husband

LameyJoliver · 15/05/2024 07:55

I cut my family's legs off as soon as I got my micra. Phew!

IItisymoi · 15/05/2024 10:56

The old 'Rover' V8 petrol engines originated from an American design and fuel economy was never really considered at the time. Building things badly or inconsistently you can thank trades unions/British management also at that time.

Lonelycrab · 13/05/2024 20:54
Well I guess one advantage of owning a RR is that they also have their own, personal motorway speed limit of 90mph as opposed to us plebs limited to 70
Wrong, many cars can be driven fast and inconsiderately.
There are several makes of car 'sans permis' (can be driven without licence) in France that are speed limited to 60km/h or less but even driven at 50km/h (30mph) in the middle of the road they are a menace, thus inciting accidents as even many tractors are faster.

My daily run around farm car is a Skoda Fabia and its the most awful, unreliable car i've ever owned, and i've had about 40 cars 😅

Arraminta · 15/05/2024 12:12

Yes a competent driver in a Range Rover doing 90 in the outside lane is much less of a menace than a nervous driver stubbornly sticking at 55 in the middle lane. My MIL was a terror on the motorway because she was too scared to use the outside lane but refused to use the inside lane because of having to avoid drivers pulling onto the motorway. So she would resolutely stay, doing 50mph, in the middle lane for mile after mile, oblivious to the problems she was causing around her. But I guess she was at least driving a morally acceptable, 9 years old Citroen.

Lonelycrab · 15/05/2024 12:45

Wrong, many cars can be driven fast and inconsiderately

@IItisymoi You're missing the point here. Of course pretty much any car is capable of exceeding the speed limit and driving recklessly. But RR’s routinely drive significantly over, it is a rare sight to see one on the motorway doing 70 or less. I drive about 5k miles of motorway per year and that’s my experience.

IItisymoi · 15/05/2024 13:01

But RR’s routinely drive significantly over,

The car is not the fault, inconsiderate drivers are:
See also drivers wearing hats and cars with the fish emblem on the back.
The blanket 'hatred' of SUVs is weird too because many are not as 'gas guzzling' as a Renault Scenic and are much the same size'. 4X4 is another exporession used in a derogatorty way by tabloids (and many on MN) because the only time when the 4 whhels are NOT turning at (about) the same speed is when on mud or ice. It is no real difference to carrying 2 sacks of spuds in the back seat.

TizerorFizz · 15/05/2024 13:05

@Lonelycrab

What a joke!!! Range Rover drivers always at 90 on motorways.? The stats of serious traffic accidents are highly weighed towards young drivers. Especially deaths. Rsnge Rovers don't attract young drivers but don't let a big of prejudice get in the way!

lotsofpeoplenametheirswords · 15/05/2024 13:08

I have a RR Evoque and no, it's not on finance.

Arraminta · 15/05/2024 13:22

Seems to me that if RR were still same size and specifications but only cost £25000 brand new there simply wouldn't be the prejudice.
