Is it on finance? Just wondering how many people actually buy then outright? They are my dream car and although I could finance a monthly payment I could never buy one outright! How much do you have to earn for that?! I’m on 89k for context

Most cars these days are on PCP or lease deals (or a lot of cars anyway, I'm not familiar with exact statistics).

In a way, it means that the price/rrp is largely irrelevant. The PCP/lease monthly price is paying only for the depreciation over 3 or 4 years.

This means that so-called premium car brands can actually be affordable, although you do need to plan for what happens in 3-4 years once the finance is up.

We've gone for a four year deal recently on a so-called premium EV, with option to buy. It's quite the commitment, we've been able to do it without significantly impacting our financial goals. We're so glad we did it.

The depreciation plus interest plus massive profit for the lease co.

it Was the £4K a year insurance that put me off. too many stolen

12CatsAndCounting · 12/05/2024 22:18

Yes, own a Sport, paid for outright, second hand. My second one. It was 4 years old and cost about 40k.Super comfortable and easy to drive, I live on a farm so it comes in useful. Insurance isn't to horrendous but I'm in my 50s.

Hiker50 · 12/05/2024 22:19

A few years ago I bought a high end car from a garage on the Kings Road in London. I just paid for it but the salesman said that 92% of the cars they sold were on finance.
Unless you have to paying monthly for a depreciating asset is a mugs game. Range Rovers are notoriously unreliable and if you really want one you can pick an older one up for very little.

IsadoraQuill · 12/05/2024 22:19

They're the new BMW drivers. Every single one is driven by an utter bellend with no regard for other road users.

And no, before you Range Rovers jump on me. This isn't me speaking out of jealousy. We have a car worth a lot more than a Range Rover. I genuinely have noticed the sheer fuckery these wankers get up to.

Pablosdog · 12/05/2024 22:22

I own one outright but planning on changing it soon as the fuel and parts are extortionate. Always something wrong with it too!

Onabench · 12/05/2024 22:25

Known as drug dealer cars here OP 🙈 (well, WAGS of drug dealers) Total chav cars that struggle to get insured. Paid for in cash with the couple I know of...

msmatcha · 12/05/2024 22:32

I know lots of people with them, not unusual at all round here but we are rural. I drive one sometimes for work and love it.

SkankingWombat · 12/05/2024 22:35

Angeldelight50 · 12/05/2024 21:58

I’d guess most cars on the road these days are financed, not just Range Rovers.

This is my thought too.

OP, would you not rather own something that doesn't label you so negatively? I say this as someone who grew up often bumping along in the dodgy fold-down seats in the boot of Range Rovers and have happy memories of them, but wouldn't touch one of the new ones with a barge pole (for a mixture of styling, price, loss of fit-for-purposeness and the accompanying Wanker status). Then add in the very real chance of walking out of your front door in the morning to find it missing... They are constantly targeted here, with 3 stolen in our village on the same night recently. They are never found.
There is something to be said for a slightly older, less prestigious car that you own outright IMO...

Pollipops1 · 12/05/2024 22:37

I loved the shape of the old Vogue model but don’t like the new ones. They are a bit TOWIE now I think

Starseeking · 12/05/2024 23:43

I'd imagine a lot are purchased on some sort of finance given the number of them on the road; I'd be surprised if there are that many people with the best part of £100k to splash on a car.

That said, I love the look of Range Rovers. I don't love finance though, so purchased my current car (an electric for £23k) outright.

When I've got a spare £100k, it'll be going on extensions to my house, before I get anywhere near buying a Range Rover (still love them, such a sleek and luxurious looking car!).

nwsw · 13/05/2024 00:16

I had a brand new evoque put large deposit down and paid £340 pm this was around 5 years ago.

Loved it and never had any problems. Handed it back after two years as boot wasn't big enough. Ended up getting £5k back.

CheapThrillsMeanNothing · 13/05/2024 00:48

@Yesfrepp
It won't be your dream car when it gets stolen off your driveway.
Or you can't get it insured.

Dogstar78 · 13/05/2024 00:56

We have a Jaguar F Pace on finance. Always brought cars outright. This the first nice car we have owned. We were forced out of our cars by ULEZ. Just depends how you choose to spend your money. When we broight the dealer said, always look in the service car park, that will give you an idea of cars that have problems. It was all RRs! This was a JLR dealership.

We really enjoy getting out and about more now as the drive is so comfortable. There is so much uncertainty with EVs, what cars will be banned next, we felt the opportunity to walk away only having lost the depreciation was OK for us. My dad and both really enjoyed cars (looking at them/ talking about them) whereas my sister couldn't give a damn! We are all different. I also love I can get my mum's motorised wheelchair in easily, without worrying what else needs to go on the boot!

Elephantswillnever · 13/05/2024 00:58

I was driving a shiny new Range Rover sport the diesel version the other day (work) My god it was comfy the seats were so nice once you figure out how to adjust on screen. Favourite new car, that said no way I could ever afford one

Fr7fr6 · 13/05/2024 01:03

They're not the worst looking cars, but they're terrible for the environment and seem to be driven by entitled arseholes. All of the worst, and most entitled, driving and parking I see is buy Range Rover drivers.

I'm afraid they also come across as chavvy, along with the new Land Rover Defenders. Increasingly, the people I've seen driving them recently look like chavs with a bit of cash. Most recently a man in a tracksuit who got out and proceeded to start spitting. Perhaps the option to finance has cheapened the brand somewhat.

babyproblems · 13/05/2024 01:08

I’ve just bought one about ten days ago. So far so good but I was worried about the reliability but thought F it 😂 I needed to replace my car and I’ve always wanted one.. it’s just a selfish whim and I decided to go for it because I never buy anything expensive or spend a lot of money on anything. I am good at saving & I paid outright. I’ve always had crappy cars or quite cheap cars and never had a car on finance as I was brought up to believe it’s the most expensive way of buying a car!! I don’t know if that’s still true or not.

babyproblems · 13/05/2024 01:16

For those talking about security/ theft issues yes you can get updates from LR if you need one but the newer models have really quite low theft rates as the keyless entry software isn’t the same. I didn’t find insurance an issue - although I did have one quote of about 3K but obviously didn’t take that and m in the end I went with a quote that was for half of that so I thought was pretty acceptable. Like others talking about the Ulez we also need high euro rating.

It won’t be your dream car after you get one and it’s never out of the bloody garage

God this. Last time I was at my garage, I arrived to see the mechanics pushing a Range Rover in off the road.

When I came back to collect my car, the receptionist was giving the bad news to the owner. The bill for the day was £1500, but the full estimate to repair the car was £4k to £8k depending on what exactly was wrong (I'm assuming major engine problems). The discussion included the fact that the car was on finance, so they had little choice except to pay for repairs.

I heaved a sigh of relief that I drive a tiny car that costs a fraction to buy, run and repair and still achieves the basic aim of getting me from A to B.

Why anyone drives these Wanker Panzers is beyond me. People seem to get their self esteem from their car

lol lol lol thanks

AnneElliott · 13/05/2024 07:10

They get nicked round by where I live so I wouldn't have one for that reason. Plus locally the women who drive them are labelled 'Gangsters Wives' so that also puts me off!!

If I lived on a farm with gods then maybe I'd get an old one but not living in a town.

AnneElliott · 13/05/2024 07:15

With dogs! Not sure gods what use gods would be!!

I love my range rover. I drove evoque now and next year gonna change for velar. My car insured just fine. I live in cambridge though not in london. So i dont know how hard to insured RR in london. I love my car, it was my dream car and iove it everyday. I’m with finance aswell only £250 per month. Not much. It is 2014 evoque. Bought as second hand car in 2015. So its pretty new when i bought it. I put big downpayment.

Wow have you really been paying off your car for a decade? Makes sense but a bit bleak

CommeUneVacheEspagnole · 13/05/2024 07:19

Even if they're on finance, they're still ridiculously priced. I used to work in finance and sold a few range rovers (real ones not evoque etc) and they were £1k a month plus VAT back then. Pre covid. I dread to think what they are now but I know my company car, (about the same cost as an evoqué maybe 5k less) is now £7/800 a month with a £5k deposit.

That's a mortgage or a short all inclusive holiday per month.

backinthebox · 13/05/2024 07:23

We just bought one, cash. Must let DH know that despite being sensible drivers in our other cars, we are automatic wankers the second we get in the Range Rover.

It’s a very comfortable car, and it would have to try very hard to be more unreliable than either the Mercedes or the Jaguar we had, both of which needed sending back to the dealers within days of buying them and then proceeded to break down at every opportunity.
