If you own a ranger rover

Is it on finance? Just wondering how many people actually buy then outright? They are my dream car and although I could finance a monthly payment I could never buy one outright! How much do you have to earn for that?! I’m on 89k for context

Pedestrian safety on a RR is better than some VWs. Not worse than lots of cars. So much rubbish in this thread. Just guessing without looking at NCAP data.

TizerorFizz · 14/05/2024 10:53

Of course they are a great SUV driving experience. Not a Porsche Macan which is the best but these are big luxury cars. They aren't sports cars. Get a Macan if you want speed and ability on the road. Nowhere near as much space though.

pastaandpesto · 12/05/2024 22:01

What is it you like about them, OP? To me they just scream Utter Knob, more than any other car on the road I think! I completely understand it's subjective though!

👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

Arraminta · 14/05/2024 11:42

OP I really hope you haven't been put off getting your dream car just because of this thread. I'm not going to delve into why some people are so venomous about Range Rovers because I suspect very few of them have ever even driven one. So I will just say that I have owned several luxury cars and my RR is far and away the best I've ever driven. I've only had very positive experiences with mine and don't have any regrets at all. At the very least you should test drive one just to experience the difference.

So, if you can comfortably afford to buy one and run it, then you should at least give it a try. If owning one inexplicably transforms you into a twat overnight then yes that is a concern but you can always sell it and buy a fugly but morally superior people carrier thing.

OP, you admit that your self-esteem is tied up with having a posh car!

Mine is emphatically tied up with NOT having a posh car. I love my old banger and I have to say, it's a great filter when I meet people - and fascinating to see how you get judged....sometimes positively, sometimes not!

I do judge drivers of suburban tanks, though, and what you've said sort of confirms my thoughts...that it's all about compensating for some self-esteem issue.

Have you ever considered that people may just not judge you for the car you drive?! Seems like a very alien concept to the majority on this thread who have got themselves into a right tizz about they apparent type of people who drive a RR.

To paraphrase "some people like to drive range rovers, get over it".

I don't care in the slightest what sort of car my mates drive. Because it literally has no effect on my life. If they are knobs I do care. But I don't correlate the two entirely separate pieces of information.

Ineffable23 · 14/05/2024 12:49

I have a friend who has an Evoque which she owns outright. She bought it at 5 years old, has paid it off over another 4 or so years. When she bought it from the dealer she managed to get a full-spec warranty that covers everything bar e.g. tyres or a cam-belt change. It goes about £1000 a year and her car has never needed less than £1000 of work.

It has expensive tyres, expensive insurance and eats quite a lot of fuel.

BUT if you do want one, this would be a way of having one and capping the costs so you know how much you're spending, so it might be the way to go.

Why anyone drives these Wanker Panzers is beyond me. People seem to get their self esteem from their car

Aww... is someone feeling inadequate?

On that basis are you happy for price increases on groceries and everything you buy? As if we are charging taxes by vehicle weight now huge supermarket and other industry lorries will see a huge increase in costs, buses, with vans and basically most goods and services that are far heavier than RR and similar!

Er, it's hardly difficult for tax systems to distinguish between heavy goods vehicles and huge cars bought by private individuals.

Yes, they are taxed. The numbers on the roads suggest they are not being taxed anywhere near heavily enough.

SofiaSoFar · 14/05/2024 13:07

The use of "they're all financed/leased" as a put down of the owners doesn't really work all that well when you get to cars at £50k+.

We have bought other cars at Range Rover money and paid cash before but, dependent on the finance rates, it's very often better to take finance - usually via non-dealer means - and leave the money invested elsewhere.

If you have, say, £250k in your S&S isa making 10% pa, and always max out the contributions each year, taking out £100k to buy a car isn't a great idea at all. You borrow instead.

Even if you had to pay a bit more than 10% (and in fact you'd get it quite a bit lower anyway) it's worth it to not lose the tax-free status of gains on the £100k, because you can never get back to that point again.

I wouldn't even take cash out of a GIA now to pay for a car, as long as funding is available at ~8%

As a cyclist I do care what people drive

supercalafragilisticexpealidocious · 14/05/2024 14:04

@Allfur you're perfectly entitled to care what they drive on the basis that if there was a crash you're more likely to be injured than otherwise. But you're not entitled to make sweeping generalisations about people based on nothing other than reverse snobbism and assumptions based on your own misheld prejudice, which is what the majority of this thread is.

Well yes, exactly. I realise that the sweeping put downs about how all RRs are only financed anyway are a bit silly. Our thinking is very similar to you in that money can often be invested elsewhere in ways that make far more money.

DdraigGoch · 14/05/2024 14:27

Polishedshoesalways · 14/05/2024 03:57

I agree same here. I couldn’t care less what car people drive but in the country 4x4 is a must in the winter where we are, and most have access to one.
I find the acidity of this thread rather amusing. Why would anyone care about what car other people choose to get from A to B.

If the cars that other people use affect us then yes, we do care.

  • High vehicles are more dangerous for vulnerable road users.
  • Heavy vehicles cause more wear on the road.
  • Polluting vehicles are fucking up the entire planet.
  • Wide vehicles are more difficult to pass on country lanes - less of an issue with a battered P-reg Range Rover (probably painted maroon because they all seem to be), but it's certainly an issue with a spotless white 24-reg one where the driver doesn't know how wide their vehicle is and is terrified of the hedges scratching the paint.

People get ranges for the status, rather than them being decent cars. Every person I have known who ‘own’ one are complete dicks and far up their own arses. This one couple I know have matching range rovers (one white, one black) and instead of saying ‘the car’, they say ‘the range’. I shouldn’t judge, but anyone I see driving them, I just see them as people who care about image and status and thinking they’re better than everyone else.

They're basically the new Jaaag drivers. But without the class.

Jeremy Clarkson Explains Jaguar Owners

WIthout question this is the best summary of most every Jaaaaaaag owner that I've personally encountered.

The car isn’t Dangerous the driver is. If you get hit by a van, or a BMW X5 etc it’s likely to cause as much damage as getting hit by a Range Rover. I know someone who killed someone by accident in a road collision and she was driving a Nissan micra!!! Cars don’t kill people sh*t drivers do!

This sounds like the sort of argument that an NRA member would make about semi-automatic rifles.

To all the people hating on RR. I bet if someone said they’d buy one for you, you would take it.
I'd sooner have the £50k in cash.

You don't own a Range Rover. You own an Evoque, which is the length of a hatchback.

The real Range Rover is the full size model (formerly known as "Vogue" for years since 1981) which is around 5.1 metres in length, and over two metres wide.

Jaguar Land Rover did a very clever thing to plaster the Range Rover badge over all these small silly models. Everyone now thinking they are driving 'the' Range Rover, when there can only really be one.

This is one of the most bitchy comments I’ve ever read on mn 😂 I don’t know how you can get this worked up over a car and an internet forum

Better off getting the battered P-reg maroon one for that, that way you've still got £48k to spend on something else (it would pay down a substantial chunk of my mortgage for one thing).

A lot of RR drivers have long since paid of their mortgage. I'm sure there are those who go out on a crazy limb to buy one and cripple them self with finance payments and stuff, but you get idiots driving all sorts of cars. But there are those who drive a Range Rover because they just really like them and the cost of them isn't a consideration because you can comfortably afford one.

What I can't get my head around are parents taking out high finance on cute, brand new cars for their seventeen year olds. Like DDs friend who woke up to a new baby blue Mini on her 17th birthday when her parents were already financially struggling. This really is madness to me. Our DCs learned to drive in a nine year old VW that we bought for cash.

We're not being offered a free landy unfortunately Sad

If I was offered the choice of free range or free 90s Panda 4x4 I'd choose the panda

A RR isn't that much wider than a Ford Focus, obviously much taller

I would think that actually makes quite a bit of difference in normal sized parking spaces.

SUVs are inferior in every way to a nice sporty estate

You mean a STATION WAGON?
