Israel and Eurovision

1000 replies

Carly944 · 12/05/2024 12:16

I've seen all the protests that Israel shouldn't have been allowed to enter the Eurovision. I don't think politics should be part of eurovision

Has everyone forgotten that a lot of countries at this stage have invaded each other, and that a lot of countries have a bloody and violent past.

The United Kingdom invaded many countries and massacred and killed many many people in the past.

Germany have obviously started two world wars.

Spain have invaded countries and done a lot of brutality to people in the past.

Should none of these countries be allowed to enter eurovision then. If we are going to put politics into it, nearly every European country would be banned from eurovision.

Israel is far from the only country in the world that have invaded and massacred people. Its awful, but it has also been awful when other countries did it. And many of them have. So I'm not sure why there was just the call for Israel to be banned

I think you shouldn’t exclude a country but what irritated me was that the singer’s last name was ‘Golan’ which feels like a provocation. Definitely an inappropriate political statement. Here’s the Wikipedia definition of Golan heights:

The Golan Heights are a rocky plateau in the Levant region of Western Asia that was captured by Israel from Syria in the 1967 Six-Day War. The international community, with the exception of Israel and the United States, generally regards the Golan Heights to be Syrian territory held by Israel under military occupation.

Christ I’m not sure she can help her surname! Golan is a Hebrew name

Actually 'newish' confused me too... so really, you've got to back off a little. We're not all out to get you.

You also haven't read any of my replies stating that it seems Ireland is a member, but does not fully accept the definition... specifically the examples. You've been told this now. Please don't play ignorant again

I have missed those replies I’ll confess. It doesn’t quite say they don’t accept the full definition though

I am not a clone…
I just don’t agree with a lot you say on this thread.
Thats no reason to call me a clone.

AhNowTed · 13/05/2024 23:05

@YaMuvva

I assure you I am no clone as MNHQ will attest.

In fairness I don't believe you called someone antisemitic on the basis of being pro-Palestine or anti-Israeli government. But you have used that word when describing folks having antisemitic traits.

But your posts are too numerous and I'm on the app so I can't search.

I’m very sorry to hear that, that’s terrible and I’m pleased your are on the path to recovery.

But now can you imagine if I passive aggressively poked fun of that or made a “sorry about your bloody mental health” comment in return? Especially after having spent the whole thread insisting you said something you had not said and ignoring every comment showing otherwise? Which is what you HAVE done. I have NEVER once said that being Pro-Palestinian is being anti-Semitic. Not once. In fact I’ve stated many times I do NOT think this to be true. And you have persistently ignored what I’ve said in favour of saying ”nah you do”.

How am I meant to take that, please tell me?

She really should apologise for her name. Ffs.

Oh I don’t mean you at all! You will notice how many thank this I have given you I agree with so much of what you say (contrary to popular belief I am not anti-Palestinian)

You are getting back pretty much what you're giving out. And tbh I think I was being decent sympathising about your eyes when you've been so argumentative. But if you're determined to see the worst in everyone it's hard to interact meaningfully. Thank you for your well wishes though, they haven't managed to put me back in the big house yet!

Danielgault said 'sorry about your eyes'. There is nothing passive aggressive about that. We're all human here and can still commiserate with each other over shit stuff. I too am genuinely sorry about your eyes and for Danielgault's experience.

YaMuvva · 13/05/2024 23:14

This thread has upset me far more than it should have and far more than I have ever allowed a MN thread to upset me. But I have NOT been accused of making the comments I’ve accused of been making, I don’t appreciate my posts staying my true beliefs being ignored in favour of a lie, and I DON’T appreciate my I’ll health being made fun of and used against me. I am in agony, living the side effects of strong meds and recent major surgery and shitting myself about my upcoming cancer treatment, so I’m dipping out now because I tolerating bullying and gaslighting can’t be very good for me health.

To reiterate, for the 100th time: I do not believe being Pro-Palestinain = being anti-Semitic. If posters here want to lie to themselves that that isn’t true, be all smug because I’m taking the bait that they don’t accept it and revel in their passive aggressive comments about my health, then knock yourselves out and enjoy being or supporting bullies.

@CuriousD

Are you seriously attempting to justify the genocide in Gaza with the genocide of Jews?

Isn't this what some commentators are accusing Israel of - of perpetrating a genocide behind the cloak of the holocaust.

No one is denying the holocaust or the ethnic cleansing of Jews. No one.

But Never Again means never again for everyone.

The point I am making that the situation and history isn't all one way: Israel bad, Arabs good.

Approximately as many Jews as Arabs were killed or expelled from their homes and displaced during and after soon after 1948.

The Jewish leadeship accepted the UN partition plan while the Arabs rejected it. The Mufti said the streets of Jerusalem would run red with the blood of the Jews that would be slaughtered. Egypt, Syria and Jordan agreed how they would divide Palestine between and invaded. There wasn't going to be a Palestinian State by Arab design. Problem for them was the Jews won the war: convincingly.

In 1956 Egypt violated International law by closing the straits of Tiran. Effectively declaring war in Israel. Other Arab countries joined in the party. Problem for them was the Israelis won the war: convincingly.

In 1967 Egypt and others tried the same thing again and it backfired specularly. The problem for them was the Israelis won the war convincingly.

In 1973....same story.

In 2023. This time the Iranians replaced the Arabs as aggressors and lost convincingly.

Maybe, just maybe the Arabs should the peaceful approach to resolving the problem because the warmongering aggressive approach has failed every time and their people just end up suffering as a result.

Look I'm genuinely sorry about your health issues, but I do not see what you see in these comments. I too have felt like you've twisted many of my posts and you have made some horrible personal digs at me. Though I do wish you well and genuine good luck with your cancer treatment. I'm sorry you're going through that.

They were not passive aggressive comments about your eyes.

i often see posters disagreeing passionately on all sorts of threads and then one of then brings up a personal issue. The other poster briefly expresses sympathy and then continues debating. I see it as courtesy. You see it as passive aggression.

I think you clearly have stuff going on and this thread is the last straw for you. But you are hurling unfair insults now and clearly need to step away. For your sake. I would wish you well with your treatment but you would take it the wrong way.
