To think that this portion for an adult is too little?

Family bbq, we usually host but my sister has moved and wanted to host at her house instead.
Myself and DH love hosting and make sure that there are plenty of snacks, food and drink for everyone.
DS said that we had to bring our own drink which is absolutely fine with me as I know that can be very costly to cater for everyone, I offered to bring a dish but she said that they had food sorted out.
Just to clarify my DS has no money worries as her and her DH both have well paying jobs so I was surprised to be served 2 hotdogs and that was it. 2 sausages and 2 buns each, nothing more. No dessert, snacks or anything other than that.
Would you think this is an acceptable bbq and portion per person?

That’s a shit BBQ. It’s like they’ve read about barbecues but never been to one.

Franticbutterfly · 11/05/2024 17:07

That's not a bbq, it's hotdogs in the garden.

Pickingmyselfup · 11/05/2024 17:09

It's probably technically enough but it's pretty poor in terms of hosting.

For me a BBQ should consist of different kinds of meat, definitely burgers, sausages and chicken but maybe some fish or lamb too.

A veggie option so maybe halloumi skewers as well as fish if you know there are definite veggies.

Some kind of potato

Some kind of salad

Dessert

Drinks

I have had a BBQ tonight, just me, the husband and the kids but we still had a burger each, a sausage each, corn on the cob for 2 of us, halloumi skewer for 2 of us and marshmallows for dessert.

I would have got crisps and dips and a salad but it's a bit pointless when it will only be me eating them (and I'm supposed to be on a diet despite the several espresso martinis I have drunk!)

I love hosting because then I can go all out with food and drinks. I am hosting a BBQ party soon and there will be plenty of food and drinks to go round, will just ask people to bring a drink of their choice so there is enough to go around without leaving me bankrupt.

worcesterpear · 11/05/2024 17:10

That sort of thing is fine if you are just doing a bbq like we are tonight, just with burgers, just for ourselves or like you would do if family arrived unannounced. I would be embarrassed to serve this to people I had asked over, is it possible she was intending to do burgers as well, but they had sold out? I'd at least do some mini jacket potatoes, maybe salad and puddings. Other people's bbq ideas on here sound delicious.

One sausage in a bun is ample but I would expect some salad to go with it.

😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

LLMn · 11/05/2024 17:15

Costly to cater for everyone, you say your sister thinks? Well, don't then invite everyone, or better, anyone. Horrid tradition - 'bring your own drinks' - people who are well mannered, will bring a bottle or two for the host, but to specify 'bring your own drinks' when she wants to showcase her new house? Or in any other scenario? Vulgar. As vulgar as a 'wedding bar' for money. Just awful. Can't afford it? Don't do it.

WiddlinDiddlin · 11/05/2024 17:15

I don't understand how this is your sister @Noed and you didn't say 'er, DS, what the actual very fuck are you playing at, where is the rest of the food?'..

I sort of understand not saying something to a host who isn't a relative, but your own sister, who has been to your BBQ's and seen how its done...

I am just dying to know what peoples justification for insisting on hosting and then under-catering to their guests actually is!

transformandriseup · 11/05/2024 17:18

My DH loves BBQing to the point where we just sick of it a few weeks into the season so this would actually be enough for me but I wouldn't dream of offering such little to guests.

Vegemiteandhoneyontoast · 11/05/2024 17:18

That sounds like a rotten bbq! I'd be most disheartened to arrive at a bbq and find there are only two sausages and two buns each and nothing else.

It sounds like the sort of thing you'd have at a fair or buy from a wagon on the street at 3am after being out on the lash.

I don't think I'd care TBH. Life's too short. Probably would have gone home and picked up a takeaway on route.

ShadesofPoachedSmoke · 11/05/2024 16:53

Is it fuck. Grin the Competitive Under Eaters Klaxon has gone off I see.

Minimum of 3 meats for me at a decent BBQ. Plus the sides. And a Magnum or cheesecake for pudding, thanks.

@ShadesofPoachedSmoke 😂😂😂😂

Talk of all this delicious BBQ food has made me crave a BBQ now. I only moved house a few months ago and it’s a renovation job so don’t have a BBQ yet 😭😭

Talk of two sad little hotdogs doesn’t make me envious though, so that’s some consolation at least. Sorry OP 😂😂

notofthisWorld11 · 11/05/2024 17:22

murasaki · 10/05/2024 23:15

More choice definitely. I always do red onion and halloumi skewers, burgers, sausages and two salads. Simple, but enough choice.

Sounds nice, that.

Katrinawaves · 11/05/2024 17:22

That’s not great!! We just had a scratch BBQ for the family (so not entertaining just the normal crowd to feed) and on offer was-

Tortilla chips and guacamole with wine and soft drinks whilst food was cooking

sausages with brioche buns
burgers and wholemeal rolls
marinated chicken
roasted broccoli with garlic

This was for 4 and nobody chose to have everything (though they could have done) and it took no planning as we basically decided this morning when we saw the weather was good to do it, and nipped across to the local smallish Asda for provisions. I wouldn’t serve up 2 hotdogs as a meal unless it was a scratch thrown together snack lunch for teen boys who descended on me with no notice and it was literally all I had in my fridge!

MrsCarson · 11/05/2024 17:23

Stingy for a BBQ I'd want more choice, Chicken or Burgers, salad, crisps, some sort of dessert like cake or ice cream or both.

Theredjellybean · 11/05/2024 17:25

i think portion wise its ok but choice is not ok...
and if invited round the implication is it is an 'event' and therefore onus is to provide a meal..so yes some variation/side salad/pudding

StormingNorman · 11/05/2024 17:27

All these BBQ menus are making me hungry!

I normally do a couple of different sausages, burgers, chicken thighs and drumsticks, vegetable skewers, lamb or steaks and some sort of fish.

Sides: potato salad, green salad, tabbouleh, shop bought coleslaw, tomato salad.

Bread: burger buns, sausage buns and French sticks.

For picking: olives, bowls of crisps and dips, maybe some Bombay mix or something interesting and good with drink.

Puddings: strawberries, ice cream, lemon tart and possibly a banoffee pie.

Snacks: I cook up more than I need of all of the above because it’s an absolute crime if there aren’t cold sausages for later in the evening.

Drink: jugs of Pimms plus the usual wines and beers. Spirits and cocktails only come out in the evening.

Obviously I do more if I’m having people over 😜

miniaturepixieonacid · 11/05/2024 17:29

I mean, calories and 'bulk to fill you up' wise, it's fine.

But interest, taste, variety and 'socialising on a summer evening' wise, it's shit.

sunglassesonthetable · 11/05/2024 17:32

2 hot dogs is what you have after a particularly bad session in IKEA.

magicstar1 · 11/05/2024 17:32

Sounds like my husband. He just said he’s doing a barbecue for the two of us this evening. He bought a pack of sausages and four baps.

I think its plenty of food

isitme111 · 11/05/2024 17:35

That's more than I get when I go to my SIL's - It's one burger in a bun at theirs !

Some people are weird. Some people are not into food at all and they are always rubbish hosts. Like pps said, they always fill up in other people’s houses though.

Exactly this. I once went to some really very wealthy friends house for dinner and they served a £2.99 chicken (tiny) between 8 of us. They live off frozen pizza, hadnt a clue. Perfectly nice people. Usually generous.
If I invite people round I know unless we have a Jacob’s Join it is going to cost me money. I don’t want to scrimp, probably go overboard if anything.
However my spidey sense tells me in this case they didn’t want to spend money on you. They did the minimum they could get away with.

Cherrysoup · 11/05/2024 17:36

We did a family bbq last year and my 2 bils/wives/dc came. One bil normally hosts and it’s fine, but not massive. My other bil took the piss when he saw our food laid out and told us it was loads compared to the other bil! There was chicken thighs, salad, couscous, burgers, proper sausages (not sure of the point of hotdogs on a bbq), buns, dessert.
