To think that this portion for an adult is too little?

Family bbq, we usually host but my sister has moved and wanted to host at her house instead.
Myself and DH love hosting and make sure that there are plenty of snacks, food and drink for everyone.
DS said that we had to bring our own drink which is absolutely fine with me as I know that can be very costly to cater for everyone, I offered to bring a dish but she said that they had food sorted out.
Just to clarify my DS has no money worries as her and her DH both have well paying jobs so I was surprised to be served 2 hotdogs and that was it. 2 sausages and 2 buns each, nothing more. No dessert, snacks or anything other than that.
Would you think this is an acceptable bbq and portion per person?

We had a casual lunch bbq today (work, orientated) 2 adults 1 child. A burger each, 3 "the best" morrisons sausages each, peri chicken wings, buns, cheese and coleslaw!!
I would be gutted at what you described!!

Deeperthantheocean · 11/05/2024 17:42

That's a poor show and what we would make for the kids not adults! Variety of meats, salad, extra dish, buffet food, coleslaw, potato salad, choice of desserts, we like our guests to feel satisfied lol. Xx

Oaktree55 · 11/05/2024 17:42

Terrible hosting. My sister in law is the same on the v rare occasions she’s hosted and it really grates especially since I host all the time (properly).

DorisDoesDoncaster · 11/05/2024 17:45

Incredibly stingy of them.

my guests usually get something like:

burger & bun
sausage (with optional bun)
chicken thighs
And either belly pork slice/lamp chop/beef steak

there will also be salad, corn on the cob, jacket potato or new potatoes, and coleslaw etc.

azlazee1 · 11/05/2024 17:45

I would bet it was a pretty short bbq, lol. Even if its her first time entertaining she certainly attended others so she should know what people expect. Too bad she didn't ask others to contribute the side dishes. Well lesson learned....party at your house!

AhBiscuits · 11/05/2024 17:47

It's enough food volume but crap. There should also be salad and a burger instead of a second hotdog.

Oaktree55 · 11/05/2024 17:48

I do take this poor hosting personally if the host is able and capable. Absolutely no excuses if so smacks of they don’t think you’re worth any effort. I speak from experience.

Famfirst · 11/05/2024 17:50

That's plenty. I couldn't eat two full hot dogs!

JaceLancs · 11/05/2024 17:54

We are having a bbq tonight
Allocation per person is 2 sausages, 2 burgers and 2 kebabs
Sides are salad and potato salad
fried onions, bread rolls and various sauces and chutneys
Don’t bother with dessert but there are plenty of ice creams in freezer if anyone else does

Exactly this. I once went to some really very wealthy friends house for dinner and they served a £2.99 chicken (tiny) between 8 of us. They live off frozen pizza, hadnt a clue. Perfectly nice people. Usually generous.
If I invite people round I know unless we have a Jacob’s Join it is going to cost me money. I don’t want to scrimp, probably go overboard if anything.
However my spidey sense tells me in this case they didn’t want to spend money on you. They did the minimum they could get away with.

Well, at least now we know where the Mumsnet chicken has gone. Poor you, though. A £2.99 chicken for 8??? This is like that thread where the OP said their MIL believed each wing was a separate portion.

HideTheCroissants · 11/05/2024 18:02

I’d need some salad as well but otherwise two sausages in buns would be enough for me. BUT when I host a BBQ I do a selection of kebabs (including veggie ones), sausages, chicken drumsticks and maybe some marinated chops, plus some salads (cous cous, pasta, potato). Then some desserts too! I don’t each much myself but I always provide plenty of food, if I don’t have any leftovers then I’ve undercatered!

Tomato Ketchup and bbq sauce were the sauce options, I'm glad that I asked as I would never want to come across ungrateful but I think we will carry on hosting from now on.

They are tight as fuck. I would be less generous to them in future.

Do they bring stuff when you invite them?

Cinai · 11/05/2024 18:05

I think two hotdogs are enough in terms of meat and bread, I wouldn’t want to eat 3, but it would be nice to have some salads or vegetables to go with it. And ideally an option to swap one of the hotdogs for a grilled chicken or something.

💯

Dial back the effort, OP.

buffyslayer · 11/05/2024 18:11

I get more than that passed over the fence by my neighbour and that's a BBQ I'm not technically invited to!

Last time I got
Sausage
Halloumi
Corn on the cob
Prawns
Various salads
Part baked bread and butter

Then a marshmallow and chocolate biscuit thing later

Walker1178 · 11/05/2024 18:11

Does feel a little miserly. We’re hosting right now and I have twice the number of burgers, sausages and chicken drumsticks than we have people. We have salad, coleslaw, rice and a couple of boxes of cornetto ice creams in the freezer. We also bought a couple of cases of kopperberg to start things off. Either host fully or do a pot luck where everyone brings something along either is perfectly fine

Rumplemunchkin · 11/05/2024 18:14

I couldn’t eat 2 hot dogs because I don’t like bread and I don’t like sausages. Apart from that your sister is a stingy madam and I wouldn’t be going back, I’d rather stay at home and eat something I like to eat or at least have a choice.

Where were the ribs, chicken, kebabs, burgers, salads, veg, coleslaw, potato salad and various other salads? If this was my sister I’d be telling her I wouldn’t be attending any future catered for events at her home and the reasons why.

@Famfirst is definitely the sister 😂

SmallestInTheClass · 11/05/2024 18:26

I'd be full of I ate two hotdogs but it's more the lack of variety that's the issue. If it was one hotdog with salads, crisps/chips, pasta salad/rice etc then that would be fine. Most people I know never eat more than one burger and chips if out for dinner so I find it odd that people eat 3-4 just because it's a BBQ.

Allwelcone · 11/05/2024 16:38

Some people don't like food! My DH loves it (sadly) so for example at our bbq tomorrow, MIL is coming, there's

  • sausages
  • marinated lamb,
  • sea bass,
  • taramasalta houmous, pitta bread,
  • tsatziki
  • potatoamnd green salads and
  • a homemade raspberry cheesecake.

MIL hates cooking otoh and would give us a very small ready meal at hers.

Tomorrow we will be mainly watching him eat.

What's sad about your husband liking food?

uncomfortablydumb53 · 11/05/2024 18:29

Is she known for her hospitality?
That's not worth lighting the BBQ
I wouldn't have felt welcome at all, especially as she declined your offer of bringing anything

I should think not. I looked at a photo of a bread bun in 2006 and I'm still absolutely stuffed.

The fact you say this and your name is smallest in the class is literal gold. Gold.

I hate bbq, I’d have take soft drinks and eaten at home. Hubby could of had mine.
