To think that this portion for an adult is too little?

Family bbq, we usually host but my sister has moved and wanted to host at her house instead.
Myself and DH love hosting and make sure that there are plenty of snacks, food and drink for everyone.
DS said that we had to bring our own drink which is absolutely fine with me as I know that can be very costly to cater for everyone, I offered to bring a dish but she said that they had food sorted out.
Just to clarify my DS has no money worries as her and her DH both have well paying jobs so I was surprised to be served 2 hotdogs and that was it. 2 sausages and 2 buns each, nothing more. No dessert, snacks or anything other than that.
Would you think this is an acceptable bbq and portion per person?

I'd be really disappointed if I was invited to a BBQ and that was all that was on offer!

We had family round for a BBQ today and did:
Burgers
Sausages
Burger and sausage buns
Pork loins
Chicken drumsticks
Coleslaw
Potato salad
Large salad
Flavoured rice
Big bowl assorted crisps

No dessert as such but a freezer full of tip tops and ice lollies.

Ladyj84 · 12/05/2024 05:08

Crikey I will stick to family and friends BBQs/buffets because there much more fun meats, sauces, dips, desserts, salads etc the list goes on

That’s like going for a Sunday toast and just getting the meat!

Wheres the salads? Where’s the garnishes? Where’s the chips and dips? Where’s the deserts?

They obviously don’t host and don’t really want to do it again!

I disagree. It's like going for a roast and getting an Aunt Bessies Yorkshire pudding.

EwwwwwwDavid · 12/05/2024 11:05

We did a BBQ yesterday

Lamb chops
Chicken skewers
Burgers
2 types of sausage
Sirloin steak
New potatoes
Mixed salad
Sourdough
Cherry tomatoes
Mushrooms and onions

Cake for after

2 hotdogs is not it

Calliopespa · 12/05/2024 11:18

I have to confess I had always thought of the quintessence of a bbq as meat cooked on the bbq. I had not necessarily thought it required multiple varieties of meat . With guests I often provided it simply because I know some people prefer, say, chicken to sausages and I’m not sure which they will like. But had I known for sure that they liked a particular meat, I would never have felt compelled to provide an array.

As a family we often have a bbq which is “ fish on the barbecue” or “bbq chicken”.
Salads, yes, and normally at least a couple if not more, and incorporating a potato/ pasta salad option. But I honestly would not have expected people to require lots of different meat options.

Delawear · 12/05/2024 11:29

It’s enough calories but have expected some kind of salad and or slaw at least. And no pud is a bit miserable. Maybe another guest offered to make something then didn’t deliver?

Onetiredbeing · 12/05/2024 11:33

I would have been pissed off at such a shit meal. She clearly knows HOW to host as she's been to yours and has eyes because she must see what other people do. I would have said something, to the effect of I wish I had brought food. What did yourll do after yourll ate the measly kiddies food.

I’ve sorted the ‘menu’ for our bbq next week, most are vegetarians and I’ve warned the non-veggies attending that there won’t be any meat.

Veg skewers (peppers, mushrooms, courgette and cooked taro) various marinades and some plain ones.
bhutta (essentially south asian style corn on the cob)
Paneer tikka skewers and some tofu ones.
Aloo patties (i guess a but like a south asian rosti)
veggie burgers and hotdogs for those who prefer that
Various pakora
smoked egg biryani balls (a bit like arancini)
potato salad
leaf salad
bought bread buns
roti
dipping sauces
dessert will be cups of phirni with bbq/caramelised fruits like mango

So not steak etc, but there will be enough so that a guest doesn’t have to limit what they take, especially if they find there are only say two things they like.

DH and I will be heading over, just DM me your SatNav directions, ok? 👍

2 hotdogs?? 🤣🤣🤣 I'd just be getting started after those little aperitifs and would have to go to a KFC or similar on my way home. I'd be gutted I bothered to leave the house for 2 hotdogs.

It would turn into family folklore...."remember that bbq we went to where you only got a starter" 😂

Loubelle70 · 12/05/2024 14:52

StormingNorman · 11/05/2024 21:45

LTB 🤣🤣🤣

Cost more for briquettes and fuel lol

Puts me in mind of this 😄

Carpedimum · 12/05/2024 17:42

She’s not daft is she? I know people like this. They host once so that no-one can accuse them of never having anyone over, put the least amount of effort in, knowing full well that everyone thinks it’s a bit crap and you’ll all want to host again in future to show them how it’s done properly.

RavenhairedRachel · 12/05/2024 17:53

Terrible hosts. We frequently have BBQ's and as a rule of thumb 2 sausages per person with around 25% over . I burger per person with around 30% more . As these are the most popular. Kebab skewers veggie items sweet corn. Pasta salad . Salad bowl. Crisps and snacks .If people want to bring drinks thats up to them. I always do a tray of roast potatoes too. I hate guests to go home hungry.

Angryapricot · 12/05/2024 17:57

TulipTuesday · 11/05/2024 11:49

I’m with Nessa on BBQs

Are we talking
burgers and sausage in a long-life
bun, or are you takin' it serious?

I'm talkin' chicken breast, seafood, rib-eye
steaks, spare ribs, lamb kebabs.

What about side orders? Potato salad,
coleslaw. What you going to marinate?

😄

I was looking for this comment 🤣

Missingpop · 12/05/2024 18:05

They do say the more you have the tighter they are & your Ds is obviously tighter than a ducks arse.
Next time you host tell them to bring their own drinks then give them the so mini burgers in mini buns if they say anything tell them your just returning what you received😂😂😂 tight beggers

Flozle · 12/05/2024 18:06

murasaki · 10/05/2024 23:17

And when I say hot dog, I mean sausages from the butchers in baguette chunks, not a nasty sweet bun and frankfurters.

Edited

That's not a hot dog, it's a sausage baguette. I'd be disappointed if that's what I got if I'd been promised a hot dog.

Havinganamechange · 12/05/2024 18:06

I’m sorry but I would be starving with two measly sausages and hot dog buns, bland and boring.

Ariana12 · 12/05/2024 18:20

RampantIvy · 10/05/2024 23:15

That's not a barbecue. It's two snacks at a theme park.

This! Bullseye. Have they got form?

SillyLittleWoman · 12/05/2024 18:35

I'm enjoying imagining my DH and his family being invited to a bbq like this. Food fanatics, bbq fanatics, hosting fanatics. Lovely generous people who go all out for a bbq. Not well-off people, may I add, but they consider it the height of bad manners to host a gathering and not cater properly for your guests.

If they were invited to a bbq like this they'd never forgive the host. They'd be talked about them for literally years to come.

"Do you remember that bbq so-&-so invited us to and we only got 2 hot dogs..JUST TWO HOTDOGS! I'm not even joking...That's not a fucking bbq is it?!"

My DH hates visiting my DM as this is the sort of catering she does, if she even bothers at all. It's got to a stage where we actually cook something beforehand, package it up, travel the 250 mile distance to her, and then reheat it there, because otherwise we end up starving, ill and miserable.

OP, it sounds like your DSis is doing the same as my DM. Ensuring she never has to cater for guests again.

bloodyplumbing · 12/05/2024 19:06

Ottersmith · 12/05/2024 01:04

It's shit to give just two hotdogs but do you always hog being the hosts and do you try to undermine occasions that you haven't been asked to host or contribute? Feels like you're looking for reasons to host so you can be in control.

Or just provide a non shit bbq!

Are you suggesting OP should lower her standards to that shit level? Wouldn't happen in my house!

Do you get irritated by people hosting a decent event, and describe them as controlling when you want to provide a rubbish event?

TheEternalForever · 12/05/2024 19:35

Sounds like an incredibly boring BBQ to me! I'm the same as you OP, if I'm hosting I always overcater. I'd rather there be leftovers that guests take away or I'll eat the next day than people leave hungry after I've invited them over for food. But even if that's not your DSis's philosophy, 2 plain hot dogs with no sides and no variety just sounds so boring. That's not a BBQ! Could've at least done one pack sausages and one pack burgers, and picked up a tub of salad and coleslaw

ColdWaterDipper · 12/05/2024 19:56

No, it’s not enough food or variety! I e have the exact same thing at one particular family members bbqs. They never used to buy enough of anything, so say there were 10 of us at the bbq, they might buy a pack of 6 sausages! It was bonkers, however we were invited over a few weeks ago and agreed we would have a proper supper when we got home, but lo and behold they had bought a load of steaks, plenty of sausages, made 3 salads, chicken legs, halloumi, cooked 2 baguettes, bought lots of soft rolls AND there was pudding! We were astounded and now I wonder if someone else they hosted us said something as for years it’s never changed, until now.

We love hosting but I always vastly overcater which is a different sort of problem.
