To be tired of these types of comments on social media?

Having a scroll through instagram whilst bf-ing.

Now don’t get me wrong, I know what’s going on in the world and I do follow a few “serious” accounts. But I mostly follow the less serious things because it’s just bloody instagram.

I’m just getting tired of seeing so many comments on pictures posted by, say, Vogue Magazine or Rolling Stone, saying “meanwhile in Gaza” “can’t believe you’re posting this pointless crap when there’s a war happening” “Rafah is being bombed and y’all care about the Met Gala?” etc etc.

We know what’s happening in Gaza. We know it’s fucking awful. I hold my children close every day and feel thankful that we’re here and not there. But it’s ok not to be thinking about it ALL THE TIME, and nobody turns to fashion and showbiz accounts on social media for hard hitting geopolitical content!

AIBU to think these people could just… give it a rest?

YANBU. The sanctimony is tedious.

soscarlet · 08/05/2024 13:13

They’re all about 20 and think they invented political ethics. Sometimes you just need to switch off from the horrors, and they’re still too wide-eyed to get that nuance. Their time for cynicism will come!

AngeloMysterioso · 08/05/2024 13:44

It just feels like performative virtue signalling to me, but it’s everywhere… Palestine flags being commented under posts by The Hollywood Reporter ffs.

secretllama · 08/05/2024 13:49

Agree... it always bothers me when people are pointing out peoples silence but why aren't they saying this about the ethnic cleansing in China etc?

BigcatofBodmin · 08/05/2024 13:59

I'm with you, OP. It is absolutely performative virtue signalling, and as another poster has pointed out generally from younger people who - to be frank - have no real responsibilities and nothing better to do other than post their useless irrelevant comments.

I was like it in my 20s (although there was no social media then, you had to actually go outside and do something). I'd have happily glued myself to the side of a building for a 'cause'. But these things rarely help any actual world issue. And now I see these people for exactly what they are - mostly childish twats 🤣

itsnotabouthepasta · 08/05/2024 14:09

The ones that bother me the most are the ones where someone adds no value to the conversation whatsoever but have to make it all about them.

example

"heres a recipe for how you can make my homemade Bolognese"

Typical comment: "well that doesn't help me because I don't eat meat or i'm allergic to x/y/z"

Or the other day, I received a parcel with just a firm name and no address other than a postcode from amazon (they must have chosen a house at random!). I posted a pic on my street whatsapp group - the first comment was "the postcode is for this [name] road". Yes, I know that. It's my postcode. Hence how I received the item in the first place. But if you don't know who its for and its not for you, why comment?!

tennesseewhiskey1 · 08/05/2024 14:43

I totally get this, i saw an influencer this morning in a car looking TOTALLY glammed up, and she went on and on about how she struggled to get out of bed, struggled to brush her teeth, struggled to put any make up or clothes on because of Rafah, but that supporting friends is important to her so here she was... then said 'posting deets on make up look in the next reel' and proceeded to fanny about with pouts and poses for the next 3 reels. I mean - i dont know if if felt disgusted more or just in shock at the bullshit 1.30 minutes of her bleating on about how she couldnt do any of that.... it feels so fake.

SonicTheHodgeheg · 08/05/2024 14:48

Yanbu
It’s like people can’t be interested in politics and showbiz gossip 🙄
Or that nobody studies or works in fashion so doesn’t need to keep up with industry news. 🤷‍♀️

It’s very common for people online to be unable to imagine that other people’s lives are different to theirs and looking at Met Gala dresses could be a form of entertainment and relaxation.

ALovelyCupOfNameChange · 08/05/2024 15:08

“why are you ignoring the atrocities”

because other than sign petitions, donate or lobby my mp there’s actually very little I can do from my sofa - and I realise I’m fortunate in that position. But again, what can I do? And actually I’m far too ill informed to get involved in any meaningful way. I recognise all over this world absolute evils are taking place not just Gaza.

Onand · 08/05/2024 15:20

Agreed OP, it’s beyond nauseating. I’m sick of seeing it too, it seems to be seeping into every single aspect of online activity.

It’s a terrible war which will never ever be resolved because it’s perpetuated by religious motivation, neither side will ever back down.

ballytravlr · 08/05/2024 15:30

Many accounts try their best to generate as much activity as possible.

The way they do it is to be more outrageous , more judgemental , more glam , more fed up , more stupendous , more minimalist , more wholesome, cuter , smarter than the rest.

Once you have the eyeballs and followers you can sell things to them.

AngeloMysterioso · 08/05/2024 22:02

It’s just… I mean… aren’t these people exhausted? Having that much righteous indignation all the time must get tiring…

OP posts:
Damnloginpopup · 08/05/2024 22:13

I find "I couldn't give a fuck" to be a good response. At least it's honest.

I actually think these comments are far more tiresome. What-aboutery is a terrible affliction

JamSandle · 09/05/2024 10:54

Drives me mad too.

It's always the topic of the day as well.

No-ones talking about Ukraine for example.

Ukraine has had unprecedented amounts of financial, military, medical and charitable aid. Again, what-aboutery strikes.

Also with every day that passes I see just a little bit more of these kind of posts sailing close to the anti-semitism winds. My family has Jewish heritage and we are planning to go to Auschwitz at some point and find paper copies of everything containing our family information. So I follow a lot of Holocaust memorial pages on Instagram to research where to go and what to do. There was one the other day an elderly survivor who found his parents names in the book of victims at the Holocaust Memorial museum and was sobbing and taking a picture. So many “Free Palestine 🇵🇸 “ comments. It’s anti-Semitic as fuck and if I was a celebrity I’d be seriously keeping my distance with a movement that seems to be increasingly loaded with racism as the days go by <awaits grilling>

There is also a rise in this age group of Holocaust deniers and it’s terrifying. People so bold to claim they’re in favour of ethnic cleansing of Jewish people but heaven forbid you point out the fact the Hamas are terrorists and suddenly it “You want to rid the world of Muslims” 🙄

That happens on MN too.

the worst is “This is not funny”. How arrogant to think YOUR sense of humour is the only subjective sense of humour in the world and you can declare it as fact.

A Eurovision candidate (can’t remember the country) said that (regarding Israel’s entry) “If I wasn’t competing I’d boycott Eurovision” - so you WON’T boycott then 🙄

It’s not what abouttery because it IS happening to Muslims in China. What’s wrong with pointing out the disparity in support?

I wonder if there will be a memorial in Rafah where descendants can go to find the names of their relatives, and weep over those pages too?

I strongly suspect there will be.

There may be yes - what does that have to do with Jewish people visiting Auschwitz?

Comment alike this are exactly what people are talking about. People can’t discuss the Holocaust anymore or anti-semitism without some whatabboutery about Palestine. What has Palestine have to do with the Holocaust?

YoureStuckOnMeLikeATattoohoohoo · 10/05/2024 00:19

It's annoying when people are having a massive go at the bigger influencers not saying anything.

It's a lot to put on someone to speak about something of this magnitude, that they may not be educated on properly, simply because they have 100k followers.

You can't demand a make up influencer, or a comedian, or someone who does art speak about a genocide or they will be cancelled and lose their career.

Some of these people remind me of the just stop oil folk, they love a bit of activism, feel like they are important, but demand others inconvenience themselves rather than do anything useful.

SD1978 · 10/05/2024 00:39

It is exactly performative virtue signalling- basically doing nothing, but bringing other people down for continuing with life. It seems to be all that some people are capable of- the pile on whilst offering nothing practical or having any real understanding of what is happening in the world around them.
