How messy is your house right now? BE HONEST

Trycod · 06/05/2024 16:05

I think mumsnetters are not always entirely honest when asked about the state of their homes - thinking of that thread where everyone posted immaculate kitchens when the op asked for realistic pictures.

We’ve cancelled our bank holiday plans due to weather. Kind of taken the easy route by taking the kids to a toy shop for legos to keep them occupied so DH and I could get into a box set with a curry. House is not messy but certainly not immaculate. Haven’t done much this weekend so definitely feeling guilty.

Genuinely curious - how messy is your house this very second. Instagram has made me feel a bit sick to my stomach. Following a lot of house accounts as DH and I would like to build in the 5 or so years.

My kitchen is tidy enough but everything not cleaned daily could do with a wipe - fridge, bin, cupboard doors, patio doors etc. Sink and surfaces clean for now.

One living room is a war zone. I don’t even try to have that tidy. But our living room/diner is totally clutter free (house rule as I need one clean space for play dates without having to rush around like a crazy person). Bathroom toilet and sinks are fine but limescale could be dealt with. Grouting is a bit yuck.

All bedrooms need a dust and a vac which I may do later. Usually I make kids tidy rooms over the weekend but I told them they didn’t have to bother (they were well behaved whilst dh was sick last week which was a God send).

Washing was bad but I paid one of the kids to get through 4 baskets this weekend which they have managed. Dh will fold later.

What about you?

Absolute don’t know where to start shit tip. I have no intention of looking at it until the weekend

Octavia64 · 06/05/2024 16:07

My dining room is a shit tip.

Badly needs hoovering, the cats have shed hair all over it, several parcels of linen I need to open, teaching stuff from months ago not put away.

Hallway is clean!

My house is generally not overly tidy and while not actually dirty you really couldn't describe it as clean.

Bathroom and kitchen are cleaned regularly.

YoureStuckOnMeLikeATattoohoohoo · 06/05/2024 16:09

My living room is immaculate, the rest of the house leaves a lot to be desired.

I always make sure I have one room guest ready, and a lot of time it is just that room.

thaegumathteth · 06/05/2024 16:10

Downstairs could do with being swept and there's laundry hanging but otherwise ok.

Upstairs - total shit show

MeMyCatsAndMyBooks · 06/05/2024 16:11

Tidy. Because I spent the whole day tidying it.
It was a shit tip piror!

Blessedbethefruitz · 06/05/2024 16:12

Whole place is rank. I'm halfway through a bunch of diy, 2 small kids, both full time - I've been floored the last 2 days with a nasty bone aching virus. Dp is fine but he largely cleans, not tidies, and entertaining the kids is full on at 5 and 2 years old.

I've been flitting between cleaning, decluttering, decorating and fixing things the last 2 months. My attention span is absolutely awful due to lack of sleep, but I assume I'll eventually get it all done...

BeretRaspberry · 06/05/2024 16:12

Very tidy. But my kids are older now so there’s no toys or anything out and about like there used to be. That said, even when they were little it was tidy too - obviously toys and stuff were out during the day.

We’ve always been a clean and tidy house. I have OCD and although my intrusive thoughts don’t focus on that, I think the condition as a whole (for me, at least) means I struggle with clutter.

BusyCM · 06/05/2024 16:12

It's fine actually but I don't have little ones any more. We do have a small house with lots of stuff though as I'm a childminder but I tidy before I finish work and my own teens pitch in plenty.

JustAnotherDayInNorfolk · 06/05/2024 16:12

Hoovered and dusted upstairs yesterday, need to dust downstairs and wash the floors but can't be bothered. Laundry and ironing up to date and all beds made. Kitchen table a bit cluttered.
At first glance looks OK but don't look too closely ha ha
Me, DH and DS17 so no plastic crap to contend with!

QuickDraining · 06/05/2024 16:13

We haven't used our dining room in about 8 years. We have clutter everywhere, and it just feels insurmountable. We haven't really got cupboards or storage areas. The kitchen gets cleaned and used daily, but is cluttered. Lots of rot, a previous leak in the roof, and a bathroom that has issues... A downstairs toilet that occasionally chooses to overflow randomly. And a spare room that is totally littered. I hope that makes you feel slightly better.

Desecratedcoconut · 06/05/2024 16:14

The bones of it are lovely right now, no dust, all the surfaces, windows, mirrors are clean and the carpets were hoovered recently but I have a load of clothes on the kitchen bench ready to be distributed into bedrooms, there are things around that need to be put away in the kitchen and plates drying on the rack. The recycling needs to be emptied. That kind of thing. Clean but life in progress, kind of status

UnpickThePockets · 06/05/2024 16:14

It’s tidy. It always is.

I cooked earlier and I clean as I go.

Ironing has been hung up, hoover was out earlier, beds made, bathroom cleaned, work bag packed for tomorrow and outfit hanging in the spare room on the wardrobe door.

Caveat: I don’t have kids.

Brandnewskytohangyourstarsupon · 06/05/2024 16:14

Spotless.
Thats because I’ve been slowly and steadily decluttering for the last 12 months, decluttering and decorating, new furniture and trying to make it decent.

Why though , when the bastard fucking dishwasher is empty and fucking open ready to receive dirty cups and plates, are the dirty fucking cups and plates in the sink ABOVE the twatting thing?

We have had glorious weather here so got 4 loads of washing done so the wash basket is empty.

Still a way to go, but it is looking lovely so far.

ForgettingMeNot · 06/05/2024 16:14

Floors, worktops & surfaces are clean, pile of gray laundry done but this house needs a good declutter as nearly every cupboard and surface is full. Toy boxes and wardrobes overflowing and never enough hours or energy to tackle it all.

bilgewater · 06/05/2024 16:14

Ours is pretty good overall, because only one child still lives at home and we are about to put the house on the market so have done a lot of tidying and decluttering. But dd's room's (probably - I don't dare go up there to check) a bit of a tip, and I've just washed all the bedlinen so the house is festooned with drying sheets.

GauntJudy · 06/05/2024 16:14

Plus points:
-Bathroom is clean
-New sheets on my bed
-Cleaned downstairs carpets this weekend
-Put away 2 baskets of clean washing

Negatives:
-I have too much stuff, it's EVERYWHERE, so my house never looks tidy due to piles all over the place
-Kitchen has dirty dishes on counters cos I can't be arsed to empty dishwasher
-large heated airer dominates kitchen with a load of laundry hanging on it

So not at all instagram worthy, never is really, but I think I could be guest-ready in 2 hours if I had to!

Caspianberg · 06/05/2024 16:14

It’s pretty tidy and clean tbh. I have just always done stuff daily so it never builds up

Living room rug is full of toys Ds is playing with though.

mynameiscalypso · 06/05/2024 16:15

Ours was tidied this morning before our lovely cleaner came. Now it's both clean and tidy and I would happily have my mother over (which is my bar normally). I did, however, start to sort out my bursting wardrobe and have currently emptied it all on to my bed and then given up and come downstairs because it's all a bit too much.

Pin0cchio · 06/05/2024 16:16

I feel like I've cheated here in that we just had the bathroom done so it looks bloody brilliant as kids haven't had chance to clutter/wreck it yet

Also we had cleaner come on friday & then were away with family all weekend so again, less mess than usual

Yet

There is still just stuff about the place, a big pile of papers & stuff all over the kitchen worktop, lego models on window sills, crap unfinished artwork the kids come from school with & don't want me to bin.

Kitchen cupboard doors don't get wiped that often/unless we notice obvious marks so they are probably grim if we look close up

Duckingella · 06/05/2024 16:16

I have 5 kids aged 15-20 living here plus an immature husband who lives like a teenager;I've given up;who only person who cleans is me;I have to clean for 7 people and no one gives a shiny shit about cleaning up after themselves despite me relentlessly attempting to implement boundaries.

My house is a messy shithole right now and I'm sometimes contemplate moving out and leaving the messy buggers to it.

Medschoolmum · 06/05/2024 16:16

Mine is a terrible mess. I have adhd and I'm overwhelmed about work at the moment, the house is usually one of the first things to go. The kitchen and bathroom are always kept clean. I can't say that I worry that much about the rest of it.

Kim82 · 06/05/2024 16:16

Downstairs isn’t too bad. It’s tidy but does need a good hoovering and mopping, the living room needs dusting and the windows in the internal doors are covered in finger prints but it’s generally tidy. Just needs actual cleaning.

Bedroom wise - mine is tidy but I stripped the bed this morning and need to remake it. Dd19’s room is always tidy, dd16’s room and dd9’s room are absolute shit tips. I can’t be arsed making them tidy up today, it can wait. And all the carpets need to be hoovered too.

And finally, the bathroom is okay. Again, needs a bit of a wipe over, more so the shower than anything else but it’s passable.

Apart from the two gross bedrooms, the rest of the house could be sorted within 1.5 hours but I’m too comfy sitting and will do it another day.

Shodan · 06/05/2024 16:16

The sitting room isn't the worst it's been- I can see quite a lot of floor. Everywhere else could probably do with a fair bit of tidying/cleaning/dusting, but TBH I don't care that much- I've lived long enough to know that a) no matter how often you dust, it'll just get dusty again tomorrow; b) there are always more interesting things to do; c) so long as it's not an actual health hazard no-one will die; and d) no-one made interesting conversation about the dishes they washed.

That's not to say I don't enjoy a good tidy and clean- I do, but I don't stress when it reverts to 'normal' again.

Pin0cchio · 06/05/2024 16:16

Negatives:

This

Teq · 06/05/2024 16:17

Honestly? It’s spotless. It normally is. I don’t have small children, or a lot of clutter.

I find it really difficult to function in an untidy space so keep on top of it.

That doesn’t make me a better person than anyone else so you shouldn’t feel that you’re a bad person just because your home isn’t always as tidy as others you’ve seen.
