How messy is your house right now? BE HONEST

I think mumsnetters are not always entirely honest when asked about the state of their homes - thinking of that thread where everyone posted immaculate kitchens when the op asked for realistic pictures.

We’ve cancelled our bank holiday plans due to weather. Kind of taken the easy route by taking the kids to a toy shop for legos to keep them occupied so DH and I could get into a box set with a curry. House is not messy but certainly not immaculate. Haven’t done much this weekend so definitely feeling guilty.

Genuinely curious - how messy is your house this very second. Instagram has made me feel a bit sick to my stomach. Following a lot of house accounts as DH and I would like to build in the 5 or so years.

My kitchen is tidy enough but everything not cleaned daily could do with a wipe - fridge, bin, cupboard doors, patio doors etc. Sink and surfaces clean for now.

One living room is a war zone. I don’t even try to have that tidy. But our living room/diner is totally clutter free (house rule as I need one clean space for play dates without having to rush around like a crazy person). Bathroom toilet and sinks are fine but limescale could be dealt with. Grouting is a bit yuck.

All bedrooms need a dust and a vac which I may do later. Usually I make kids tidy rooms over the weekend but I told them they didn’t have to bother (they were well behaved whilst dh was sick last week which was a God send).

Washing was bad but I paid one of the kids to get through 4 baskets this weekend which they have managed. Dh will fold later.

What about you?

Kitchen looks a bit dusty but I'll sort all that during this week. Can't be bothered today. Rest of house is fine, although I do need to wipe down bathroom tiles. But thats it. I think so many people are consumed with having a load of things/stuff that they'll live in a stressful mess rather than just get rid of it. I can't bear to look at a load of clutter - its like a visual 'To-Do' list weighing you down, and stunting the brain from getting on with things generally.

IpsyUpsyDaisyDoos · 06/05/2024 20:01

There's some toys visible and some clothes to be put away, stuff on the draining board. Bins need to go out. But otherwise pretty tidy.

However, that's mainly because it's a small house so a) takes no time at all to do a quick vac and wipe round, and b) if I don't tidy as we go we run out of space really really fast.

SluggyMuggy · 06/05/2024 20:04

DH has been doing washing this weekend. House is not that untidy but needs a hoover, kitchen floor needs mopping and some dusting needs done.
But I go in a lot of houses and I know we are about in the middle with cleanliness and tidiness. I am fine with that.

Ivalueloyaltyaboveallelse · 06/05/2024 20:10

Ours is pretty much tidy. However i need to sort some cupboards out, but that can wait.

IfYouLiveInPigeonStreet · 06/05/2024 20:10

Super clean and tidy except for adult DC's bedrooms and bathroom. I refuse to clean up after them at their age.

Username947531 · 06/05/2024 20:15

Really clean and tidy. A few things in the sink and my dressing gown on the bedroom floor but that's it. I don't have much clutter so I find it easy to keep the place very tidy.

But that still enforces my point that the replies on that mn thread were unrealistic. If 300 houses were messy compared to those 52 (which is extremely possible if not probable), then the majority of houses are clearly not immaculate. It seems like a pretty shitty type of stealth boast when it’s on a thread written by an op who seems to want reassurance that it’s ok for things to get on top of you once in a while

I agree. The OP was “fed up” of seeing instagram ready homes and asked to see real/messy kitchens.

Cue 95% posters viewing this as an opportunity to show off their kitchens.

Shit tip

Bansheenothree · 06/05/2024 20:46

Mines pretty tidy and clean. I've throughly cleaned our bathrooms this weekend. I do everything on a constant cycle so rooms are all cleaned every couple of weeks (in addition to daily upkeep).

There's some ironing to be put away in my son's room which I'll do in the morning as he's asleep now and a bit of ironing still to do.

I'd love to do some touch up painting but tricky with a curious 3 year old. Other than that, quite happy. Although outside could do with a karcher once the rain finally stops.

FrogTheWarrior · 06/05/2024 21:28

Hamster wheel situation here. As soon as I’ve sorted one room, I turn round and another needs doing.

I should add - we’re trying to declutter and it feels like constant mess.

Apolloneuro · 06/05/2024 21:36

Needs a dust and a vacuum but not too bad.

Only two adults live here though and I have a cleaner once a week.

Dramatic · 06/05/2024 21:41

My living room is tidy, but it's small so the toys take up a fair amount of space even when it is tidy. Kitchen is clean and I swept/mopped the whole downstairs earlier so that's pretty clean too. The kids bedrooms aren't tidy, my bedroom isn't particularly tidy either and the utility room (which is barely bigger than a cupboard) is always messy.

Tintackedsea · 06/05/2024 21:42

Terrible. We are working all the hours just now and keeping the house clean and tidy is not a priority. It's not a health hazard but it definitely needs an overhaul. I'll deal with it when I have time.

hot2trotter · 06/05/2024 21:48

It's not messy, it never is. My OCD does not allow it to be.
However it's damp and falling to bits because my landlord is a waste of space.

Wexone · 06/05/2024 21:49

living areas clean and tidy after hoovering and washing floors today. cleaner was here Thursday so bathrooms done aswell as dusting hoovering and washing floors..however with 2 dogs shedding hair and a builder husband dirt and hair got in again. plus out Saturday night and Sunday so clothes and make up everywhere ( dunno how I make such a mess when getting ready) washing done so will have ironing later on thos week to do. though have to go into office this week (normally work from home) so will be broke up and have no energy from all the driving. don't dare look in the office and two spare rooms need a good clearout. moving after summer so need to get started 😫🙈

SusanSHelit · 06/05/2024 21:51

Mine is less depression nest-y than it was but still pretty bad. It is slowly improving as the weather improves.

The mountain of dirty laundry is turning into a mountain of clean laundry. There is only one set of dishes to do not four.

The floors have been swept but not mopped yet. Upstairs is pretty gross. Cat litter trays are kept on top of but bathrooms both need a good scrub

I work full time, am a single parent to 10yo ds and recently diagnosed with adhd. All things considered, it's not great, but it could definitely be worse

Allwelcone · 06/05/2024 21:53

Mine is better than it was, I do the approach that the rooms people SEE are more important than the others.

I have 4 kids although one has left home), 2 dogs, old house, high tolerance for mess. Had family for Sunday lunch, Cue massive downstairs clean up. Upstairs, kids rooms are a tip and unsorted washing, mouldy uncleaned en suite in ours.

I'm at that stage where I just do what I can for my 'values' eg making it non awkward for impromptu guests, as welcoming as possible.

Not to do with instagram, just to do with my availability and values.

TheOrangeOrange · 06/05/2024 21:53

Downstairs is always clean and tidy, just incase we have any uninvited guests - upstairs is usually like a bombs gone off....

Pin0cchio · 06/05/2024 16:16

Negatives:
-I have too much stuff, it's EVERYWHERE, so my house never looks tidy due to piles all over the place

This

Me too - it's draining - I just move stuff around

Anjo2011 · 06/05/2024 21:54

In clean and tidy order with the exception of both Dds rooms. They are the complete opposite.

Caerulea · 06/05/2024 21:58

Shit-tip!!

In laws have been here (not staying in the house) for 3 weeks, DH works away Monday to Thursday, I work Thursday to Saturday 12ish hrs a day, entertaining on the Sunday. And eldest has temporarily returned home cos his girlf needs a breather.

I worked all day today, taking in-laws to the bus an hour away tomorrow so they can fly home then Wednesday will be spent trying to sort the chaos out before DH gets back Thursday.

It's fine. I'm fine.

littlehorsesthatrun · 06/05/2024 21:59

Too much stuff and builders

Itiswhysofew · 06/05/2024 22:00

Mine's tidy, as always. I grew up with a very tidy DM, which rubbed off on DS & me.

Main bathroom needs a good clean though. I wipe it down everyday, but the grout is doing my head in. I've ordered a steam cleaner to sort it out.

I love going into houses that are comfortable and lived in, but I need a tidy home for myself.

StrongbutTired00 · 06/05/2024 22:00

Complete shit show here. Dinner plates all dirty on the kitchen sides and sink. DP jet washed all patio and garden walls etc so the kitchen / hall floors are filthy. Living room is very tidy and looks clean but I know different although no one else would notice, wooden blinds need washed down, sofa cushions and throws need washed, skirting boards need wiped down etc. been saying I’ll do it for last 2 weeks, zero motivation x

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 06/05/2024 22:03

Pretty good right now. It’s just me and DP and the cat, and DP is away with work so I absolutely blitzed the place yesterday. I have a friend coming for dinner tomorrow and want to be able to just have a quick tidy before she comes as I’ll be in work during the day.
