How messy is your house right now? BE HONEST

I think mumsnetters are not always entirely honest when asked about the state of their homes - thinking of that thread where everyone posted immaculate kitchens when the op asked for realistic pictures.

We’ve cancelled our bank holiday plans due to weather. Kind of taken the easy route by taking the kids to a toy shop for legos to keep them occupied so DH and I could get into a box set with a curry. House is not messy but certainly not immaculate. Haven’t done much this weekend so definitely feeling guilty.

Genuinely curious - how messy is your house this very second. Instagram has made me feel a bit sick to my stomach. Following a lot of house accounts as DH and I would like to build in the 5 or so years.

My kitchen is tidy enough but everything not cleaned daily could do with a wipe - fridge, bin, cupboard doors, patio doors etc. Sink and surfaces clean for now.

One living room is a war zone. I don’t even try to have that tidy. But our living room/diner is totally clutter free (house rule as I need one clean space for play dates without having to rush around like a crazy person). Bathroom toilet and sinks are fine but limescale could be dealt with. Grouting is a bit yuck.

All bedrooms need a dust and a vac which I may do later. Usually I make kids tidy rooms over the weekend but I told them they didn’t have to bother (they were well behaved whilst dh was sick last week which was a God send).

Washing was bad but I paid one of the kids to get through 4 baskets this weekend which they have managed. Dh will fold later.

What about you?

I suspect we’re fair to middling. My mum considers our house a tip but that’s because we don’t wash up everything after every meal and DH has ADD so is rather prone to leaving stuff all over, which I try to keep in small piles so I can see plenty of surface around it 😂 We both work fullish time and have a 2yo, a 5mo, and a hairy cat-it’s NEVER going to be immaculate. After the kids go to bed we tidy up the toys and make sure washing up/dishwasher all done, so we get a tidyish downstairs to relax in. Our bedroom is currently absolutely covered in DH’s (mostly) clean clothes as he’s had no desire time to put them away, but as we have a cleaner every 3 weeks this gives me an excuse to nag about mess so the cleaners can actually get to the surfaces they are paid to clean. To me, being clean is more important than being mess free (obviously both would be nice!). I know the important things like bathroom and kitchen surfaces are clean.

Rumplemunchkin · 06/05/2024 16:42

Clean and tidy as always. We have a cleaning schedule/routine which means it never gets messy or dirty. We don’t leave shoes or anything lying about either - things get put away where they belong. I couldn’t live in a messy or dirty house as I grew up in one.

Merryoldgoat · 06/05/2024 16:43

It looks like there’s been some kind of incident.

ThehillIwilldieupon · 06/05/2024 16:43

Mine is tidy. But I'm a PITA about keeping it tidy most of the time. And the kids are at their dads so they've not been here to make a mess. The whole place needs a dust but I CBA with that. I hoovered yesterday. Bathroom could do with a quick wipe but that is tomorrow's problem.

OnehundredStars · 06/05/2024 16:44

Clean and tidy (I do a bit everyday and I do one big job everyday too) eg today I did the fridge

mad 20 mins a day keeps the house on track (then a bit more on washing etc)

Hedgeoffressian · 06/05/2024 16:44

It’s not too bad at the moment. It’s not like a show home though.

dreadisabaddog · 06/05/2024 16:44

Hideous. Although my kitchen and bathroom are ok. Both kids have tummy bugs so I've gone mental with the bleach there. The rest of the house is a mess and in desperate need of a vacuum and dust though

shams05 · 06/05/2024 16:45

My house is relatively tidy but the kitchen cabinets all need a sort through, there's loads of stuff I haven't used in a long time. Laundry is up to date with one wash hanging outside so that'll need folding. Three out of four bedrooms hoovered and tidy so that's a plus.
There's 7 of us and we definitely have more stuff than we have space for so it gets messy very easily.
But I have two teens, and one adult child, they clean and hoover their own rooms and do help tidy up so I'm not on my own doing it all.

entervalidusername · 06/05/2024 16:45

Immaculate because I tidy as I go every single day. It's just my son and I and he is ultra tidy (OCD)

feelingalittlehorse · 06/05/2024 16:46

3 labradors. Over 50 toys between them. Hoover broke last weekend. Ordered new one. Not arrived.

So not for the Gram rn

Bugbeau · 06/05/2024 16:48

My living room is clean and tidy as I did this first thing. Kitchen & bathroom are ok but could do with a wipe over. Hallway clean but too many shoes. Our bedroom is ok but too much laundry & clutter. Kids rooms - one is a Lego disaster zone and the other is a bit messy but could be tidy within 5-10 mins.

murasaki · 06/05/2024 16:49

The kitchen is mostly OK bar some washing up in the sink. The living room is OK but the coffee table is covered in stuff and needs clearing. The carpet upstairs is covered in cat hair, thanks big boy, but only in one area. Must put the robot on now. And put away some washing that is on the arm of a chair.

I'd give it a 60% rating, it's basically.clean but a bit messy, carpet notwithstanding.

Luckily the cleaner comes tomorrow which means i am motivated to tidy first.

Arlanymor · 06/05/2024 16:50

Mine is all tidy and clean - my parents visited yesterday, I did all of housework on Saturday.

Except for the spare room - there’s stuff everywhere from my recent house move. Could not be bothered to do anything about it because I knew they wouldn’t go in there. Maybe next BH weekend I’ll tackle it?!

Natsku · 06/05/2024 16:51

The lounge and kitchen are quite clean, because my bloke decided to clean today (which was mostly a nice surprise but now the straw cleaning brush is missing and I suspect it got cleaned into the bin).
The playroom has toys everywhere but DS has helpfully put up a crash mat barrier so I can't see the miss so out of mind, out of sight. His bedroom is also a tip.
DD's room is in dire need of a good vacuum and mop but I'm leaving her to do that so its probably going to stay dusty for a while.

The less said about the basement, the better... the store room badly needs organising but I have no desire to do that and I don't want anyone else to do it in case they throw away something important.

MrTiddlesTheCat · 06/05/2024 16:51

My house is currently a complete and utter shit tip. I'm not normally the best as keeping on top of things but I do try. Unfortunately in February I fell down a flight of stairs, completely shattering my shoulder and am still recovering from the reconstructive surgery. I feel like I've had a good day if I've managed to load the dishwasher and wipe down the kitchen tops and put on a load of laundry. Everything else has to wait.

The floors haven't been swept or vacuumed since February. The bathroom hasn't be cleaned and DS's bedroom has descended into chaos.

ShiftySquirrel · 06/05/2024 16:51

Downstairs is ok apart from the conservatory and utility room, because I've spent most of the day sorting stuff out and hoovering.
Upstairs is work in progress.

Tbh it's the price we pay for having lots of things and all of us being a bit untidy.

KittyCollar · 06/05/2024 16:52

Clean and tidy. Three adults. Surfaces wiped over. Toilet cleaned minimum once a day. Bath could do with clean. Basically visitor-ready I suppose

MalibuBarbieDreamHouse · 06/05/2024 16:55

My house is clean. I’m pregnant with two kids under 5, but only work here and there for the family business, so there’s no real excuse for me not to be on top of it. I have a rough rota of what jobs are everyday jobs, what I do once a week etc, nothing takes up my day and I do it during school hours.

Lucky to have a playroom, so currently got my feet up watching my girls play, there’s play food scattered but they clean up before bed.

DH is very helpful and does his fair share, he grew up in a messy house, so craves cleanliness.

Sadly had to put my old cat down last week, heartbroken but definitely noticed that I haven’t needed to vacuum as much.

tennesseewhiskey1 · 06/05/2024 16:57

It’s like a tornado came through - and never left. Sigh ☹️. I have two kids and one very old dog - 18 years so she’s struggling with mess etc.

pawprintseverywhere · 06/05/2024 16:58

After working all Bank Holiday Fri- Mon I have just got home and blitzed it ha so it's looking alright.

LlynTegid · 06/05/2024 16:58

A lot less messy than it was at 9am this morning. I've got people staying later in the week.

fieldsofbutterflies · 06/05/2024 16:58

Very tidy apart from the spare room which has kind of turned into a dumping ground. We don't have DC though - just two adults, three cats and a dog.

Scoobydoobywho · 06/05/2024 17:01

We had people round for lunch yesterday, so at the moment we're doing well tidy wise.
Though give it a few more days and the dining table will become a communal dumping ground.

RickyGervaislovesdogs · 06/05/2024 17:03

Clean and tidy. DD has been out, so DH and I have been non stop.
It won’t stay that way once DD returns!

RabbitsRock · 06/05/2024 17:09

Needs a deep clean & a massive clearout to the tip/charity shop/selling pages! The main thing that would make it so much better is ripping up the horrible carpet & laying laminate flooring all through (already have it in the lounge, hall & DD’s bedroom) The kitchen is very cluttered & there’s a mountain of bags for life in one corner. Haven’t cleaned the fridge for ages or the inside of the cupboards & the oven could do with a good going over. Lounge & bedrooms in particular need a thorough dust. Hall, stairs & landing are cluttered although better than they were & we can barely get in DH’s office! The bathroom was done up last year & is the cleanest room in the house. Our bedroom is quite cluttered & I really need to sort the big pile of clothes on my stool, many still in their packaging. There is a little mould in some rooms which DH keeps saying he will scrub off. Mirrors & inside windows haven’t been cleaned in a long time. Windowsills really bad apart from the kitchen one which DD’s GF randomly cleaned recently! Oh dear that sounds awful but it’s ok living here. Just gets to us sometimes then we have a mini blitz.
