How messy is your house right now? BE HONEST

I think mumsnetters are not always entirely honest when asked about the state of their homes - thinking of that thread where everyone posted immaculate kitchens when the op asked for realistic pictures.

We’ve cancelled our bank holiday plans due to weather. Kind of taken the easy route by taking the kids to a toy shop for legos to keep them occupied so DH and I could get into a box set with a curry. House is not messy but certainly not immaculate. Haven’t done much this weekend so definitely feeling guilty.

Genuinely curious - how messy is your house this very second. Instagram has made me feel a bit sick to my stomach. Following a lot of house accounts as DH and I would like to build in the 5 or so years.

My kitchen is tidy enough but everything not cleaned daily could do with a wipe - fridge, bin, cupboard doors, patio doors etc. Sink and surfaces clean for now.

One living room is a war zone. I don’t even try to have that tidy. But our living room/diner is totally clutter free (house rule as I need one clean space for play dates without having to rush around like a crazy person). Bathroom toilet and sinks are fine but limescale could be dealt with. Grouting is a bit yuck.

All bedrooms need a dust and a vac which I may do later. Usually I make kids tidy rooms over the weekend but I told them they didn’t have to bother (they were well behaved whilst dh was sick last week which was a God send).

Washing was bad but I paid one of the kids to get through 4 baskets this weekend which they have managed. Dh will fold later.

What about you?

Mess vs clean (constant argument with DH). It's not so much of a mess because we had a tidy up. However, there's a sort of deep layer of grubbiness that I have to tackle because he just does not see it.
Deep clean monthly but living in a city = an insidious amount of grime + fluff

familyissues12345 · 06/05/2024 22:22

Not too bad, looks generally lived in but would be happy for people to pop in and not feel embarrassed!

Bedrooms are variable, DS1's is immaculate, he's at Uni and likes to leave it very tidy, DS2 isn't too bad, few bits on the floor and a messy desk, loft room/spare room is a tip as it's our laundry dumping ground when no one is staying. Our room is a state Blush

HuckleberryBlackcurrant · 06/05/2024 22:26

Mine is an absolute pigsty right now. Between being very busy recently and having sick kids and a bout of depression.....it's....not good.

I'm not talking filth, but there are dishes in the sink, clutter all over, unmade beds, laundry basket overflowing, etc.

Fallopiantuba · 06/05/2024 22:29

Today mind is pretty untidy. The kitchen needs sorting tomorrow, the living room is ok-ish, the bathrooms are bare-able, and the kids’s rooms are a bomb site. Every hard floor needs a mop.

Not that you’d know any of this if you follow my interiors IG account.

😗

A huge blanket Den In the lounge and toy cars on the floor - not too bad really ! Lived In 😃

DramaAlpaca · 06/05/2024 22:43

Much more of a tip than I'd like. There's been a lot going on recently and our standards have slipped. There just aren't enough hours in the day. We intended to tackle it this weekend just gone, but DH and I were both feeling unwell so not much got done.

This thread has actually made me feel much better.

Katemax82 · 06/05/2024 22:52

My kitchen often looks horrendous, I've no dishwasher so there's always washing up to do, it seems I'm always doing it but there's always more piling up. Also there's loads of washed clothes in baskets waiting to be ironed/ put away

Godimtiredallthetime · 06/05/2024 23:02

Public areas are tidy and clean but unseen are horrendous at moment.

Whyhaveibeencutoutofmamsnot · 06/05/2024 23:06

Mine is much tidier and cleaner than it used to be - but I am unhappy about that as there are no small children here to make it messy and homely

ArchesOfsunflowers · 06/05/2024 23:11

It’s a home. It’s generally clean, hoovered fairly recently. No big build up of dirt or dust but the kitchen floor is a little bitty.
It’s cluttered with the stuff of a big family in a medium house, but things are mostly where they should be. It’s comfortable, you can sit down and use things freely without moving things, but there’s tatty edges. Bedding is clean, towels are decent. Nothing really coordinated or is planned in any style, but it comes together ok. Tidy enough not to be embarrassed by visitors, but relaxed enough not to be impacted by child visitors making a noticeable mess.

IHateLegDay · 06/05/2024 23:19

Throughout the week it was perfect but having the kids home for 3 days means it's now a tip.
The main living areas are tidy enough but the kids playroom is disastrous and I have mountains of laundry that need putting away 🙈

Beachywave · 06/05/2024 23:26

Only clean room is the bathroom because I decided to deep clean and paint it this afternoon.
Living room tidy-ish, rest of the house cluttered...

yesthatsmyactualname · 06/05/2024 23:39

Kitchen tidy and clean. Living room a war zone. Dining room - dining table clear but a clothes horse with clothes drying at the back.
Bathrooms- downstairs fine, upstairs had teen girls doing their skincare so it is untidy.
Bedrooms all seriously cluttered and messy but that is because the kids have grown out of stuff and I've been trying to sort everything to get it on vinted.
Garden...we don't talk about the garden. It is bad.

Magpie50 · 07/05/2024 04:49

I tend to be OK at keeping the general surfaces clean and tidy but really CBA to worry about the state of the skirting boards or shelves you can't see! So it's....ok.
Also I have 3 elderly dogs so some mess is inevitable, also plasterer coming in a couple of days to destroy half the house so I'm giving up on cleaning for the duration.

Justcallmelucy · 07/05/2024 06:44

Not too bad at the moment because we have a landlord inspection on Wednesday so I've blitzed the bathroom, cleaned the oven and fridge and cleaned the windows this weekend - the timber framed windows inparticular were in major tlc need so glad got that done. Also been decluttering over the last few weeks because we are due to get some very kind inheritance soon from my deceased Aunt's house which is sale agreed so we will be looking to get on the property ladder with that so been taking lots of stuff to charity shop and recycling centre in view of making the next house move light as possible. Place could still do with a hoover though. Not sure I'll find time as work today and ds football game tonight.

Welovecrumpets · 07/05/2024 10:04

Not too bad for a family of 4 with a toddler and 4yo

We’re in a 2.5 bed, but the rooms are all pretty big bar the box room.

If 1 was absolutely showroom spotless and 10 was a hoarder from hell, most rooms are probably a 3. It’s all just clutter really - shoes lying in the hallway where the kids kick them off, the pram because we don’t really have a proper space for it, toys everywhere. But the whole house is hoovered and mopped every week, the kitchen is wiped down daily and the toilets and bath cleaned as needed usually weekly. I do a deeper clean every 2 weeks where mirrors are cleaned, dusting etc. Bedding changed every 2 weeks and I don’t allow things like dirty cups to lie about, so the house is clean just a bit untidy from the general mess of kids.

Windows are opened for a couple of hours every day because I can’t stand musty smells but I also hate plug ins and candles.

Daisy12Maisie · 07/05/2024 10:14

Most of it is clean and tidy/ ish but the bathroom has mould and some bits behind the tap that I can't clean properly and the paint in the hallway near the door is filthy from people coming in and out and marking it.
Usually when I have a day off I'll try and clean/ tidy 2 rooms, which means the entire house is never perfect at the same time. I work 4 long shifts a week so on those days all I can do is cook and tidy up the kitchen.
