How messy is your house right now? BE HONEST

I think mumsnetters are not always entirely honest when asked about the state of their homes - thinking of that thread where everyone posted immaculate kitchens when the op asked for realistic pictures.

We’ve cancelled our bank holiday plans due to weather. Kind of taken the easy route by taking the kids to a toy shop for legos to keep them occupied so DH and I could get into a box set with a curry. House is not messy but certainly not immaculate. Haven’t done much this weekend so definitely feeling guilty.

Genuinely curious - how messy is your house this very second. Instagram has made me feel a bit sick to my stomach. Following a lot of house accounts as DH and I would like to build in the 5 or so years.

My kitchen is tidy enough but everything not cleaned daily could do with a wipe - fridge, bin, cupboard doors, patio doors etc. Sink and surfaces clean for now.

One living room is a war zone. I don’t even try to have that tidy. But our living room/diner is totally clutter free (house rule as I need one clean space for play dates without having to rush around like a crazy person). Bathroom toilet and sinks are fine but limescale could be dealt with. Grouting is a bit yuck.

All bedrooms need a dust and a vac which I may do later. Usually I make kids tidy rooms over the weekend but I told them they didn’t have to bother (they were well behaved whilst dh was sick last week which was a God send).

Washing was bad but I paid one of the kids to get through 4 baskets this weekend which they have managed. Dh will fold later.

What about you?

It’s a giant mess. The kids have had friends over. I am sitting in the garden ignoring it. I CBA to tidy it or to nag at the teenagers to get them to help me.

MargaretThursday · 06/05/2024 17:52

Very. Not helped by the futon we've had in storage for 20 years being in the lounge while I try to find someone who would like it. it's in very good condition so I don't feel right chucking it.
I'm trying to tidy an hour a day currently. Unfortunately I think the rest of the house is doing their bit by untidying for the same length of time. 🤣

catwithflowers · 06/05/2024 17:57

Very tidy, although I have a fair bit of washing and ironing to do as we had family to stay for the weekend so lots of bedding to do. I need to hoover the kitchen (dog hair and grass as the lawns have just been cut and grass brought indoors) but apart from that, it's pretty sorted.

But we don't have kids living at home and are tidy, organised people. Loads of mess makes me pretty stressed.

Charlijade94 · 06/05/2024 17:58

Its a shit hole despite tidying round what feels like every hour. I have a 5 week old and a 7 year old, so I have been used to a pretty clean home for a few years and tearing my hair out now I can’t clean it as often!

PegasusReturns · 06/05/2024 17:58

Pretty immaculate but no young DC, I tidy as I go and I have a lot of help with cleaning.

I find it quite difficult to function if the house isn’t orders order so I regularly declutter. i spent several hours today filling five binbags of clothes for recycling/donation.

Rookangaroo4 · 06/05/2024 18:01

Honestly it’s spotless. It’s never not spotless. We clean and tidy as we go. The worst it ever might get is if I can’t be arsed to load the dishwasher in the evening after making tea but that’s rare. We tidy the lounge before going to bed, clean the kitchen after the last meal and make beds etc as soon as we get up. Everyone wipes the bathroom down after the morning shower . One room that is sometimes messy is my daughters if she’s in a rush in the morning.

Deadringer · 06/05/2024 18:08

Could do with a dust but reasonably tidy. I have been ironing so lots of clothes to hang up and put away, dh doing an indoor 'bbq' due to weather so kitchen is messy, but overall OK.

Youcannotbeseriousreally · 06/05/2024 18:09

There is washing drying in the utility and I’m currently cooking so have a chopping board ( and a wine glass !) on the island and there are pans on the stove ( cooking stuff) other than that everywhere is clean and tidy as it always is. I couldn’t live in a mess.

Chillilounger · 06/05/2024 18:13

It's clean, living room excepting- that needs the windows and surfaces doing, but floor is hoovered daily. Most other rooms are relatively tidy apart from the playroom which always looks a bit of a mess. Despite lots of storage. They can't seem to keep cushions on the sofa and there's usually something on the floor.

dontbelievewhatyousee · 06/05/2024 18:18

Tidy and clean. Both dh and I are very similar and we keep things in order. Whenever we’ve had cleaners over the years they’ve always commented on how tidy it is.

We have small children so it’s a thankless task but always reset every evening back to default.

AngeloMysterioso · 06/05/2024 18:21

We’re a family of 5 in a 700 sq ft 2 bedroom flat.

Living room looks like Toys R Us and a Hornby shop are doing battle for territory and neither is willing to concede to the other. Although the dining table is mostly clear which is nice.

DS 1 and 2 bedroom - a little bit untidy but will be quick work to sort before bedtime.

Bathroom- not too bad.

kitchen- a bit of a disaster.

My/dh/ baby DS3 bedroom - absolute shit tip. Bags and piles of clothes everywhere I need to sort through. Feeling completely overwhelmed by it and every time I try and get cracking in there something happens to interrupt me.

ChristmasFluff · 06/05/2024 18:22

Mine's all decent - clean and tidy. Bathroom and kitchen are certainly clean, except I know I forgot to take my hair out the plughole of the shower first thing - I'll get it when I go up to bed. I also know one small tabletop in the living room needs a dust, but if you didn't know, you wouldn't notice.

Yet open my bedroom door and the place is a total mess! I'm currently switching from winter wardrobe to summer, but winter keeps re-emerging so I have some things in limbo on the ottoman. I also have some trips coming up over the next 2 weeks, so I have three different bags on the floor, all semi-packed. I've dusted one side of the room but didn't get to the other for some reason. I'm just getting over a cold, so there are used tissues in the bed/under the pillows, and two boxes of tissues and a pot of vaseline (for my poor nose) on the floor next to the bed

And I always throw back my duvet in the mornings, so the bed looks crap, especially with those used tissues on display.

XenoBitch · 06/05/2024 18:23

It is a shit hole. Very cluttered, very dirty. The only room that is ok is the hallway.
I don't have the spoons to tackle it, and would not know where to start. I do the dishes, and wash clothing, and that seems to be all I can manage.

CrushingOnRubies · 06/05/2024 18:28

Well I cleaned the bathroom this morning and the dish washer is empty.

Part of the house is in the midst of diy so

And downstairs kitchen surfaces are fairly clear and there's nothing to trip over on the floor.

The dining room table/dumping ground on the other hand ....

gocompare · 06/05/2024 18:31

Needs a brush and a mop downstairs but other than that it's pretty ok

TheTempest · 06/05/2024 18:34

Mine is pretty good for a change as our cleaner came today and she’s ace! I need to sweep the kitchen floor as I spilled rice on it when I was cooking dinner, and put the dog toys away but that’s it. It fluctuates, same as everything though. Other days it would be horrendous 🤷‍♀️

GigiAnnna · 06/05/2024 18:36

It's not too bad. Teenage son's bedroom is a tip as usual and some of the kid's toys need putting away downstairs. I've got some clothes I need to fold and put away. The real bulk of mess is in the morning and I deal with it while the kids are at school.

Yetanothernewname101 · 06/05/2024 18:40

We have a new cleaner starting with us tomorrow. So of course I've been tidying and cleaning...
The floors are in need of a sweep and mop, the hob needs a clean, but otherwise...
Nice new cleaner can get to know the house and have doggie cuddles!

Lj8893 · 06/05/2024 18:41

Downstairs is clean and tidy, on the surface. Which is all I care about really!

Bedrooms tidy but need a dust and a hoover.

downstairs toilet clean, upstairs bathroom needs a clean.

Missrosie123 · 06/05/2024 18:41

It’s all just ok. It’s a lived in house with young kids. We’ve had fun. Kitchen clean (not immaculate) for cooking in. Laundry done so everyone has clean clothes for the week. That’s it. Life is short - enjoy 😊

TeamPolin · 06/05/2024 18:44

Kitchen and bathroom Ok, rest of the house (especially the bedrooms) just dreadful. More jobs than hours in the day currently....

Ponderingwindow · 06/05/2024 18:47

Extremely cluttered and no hope of getting it fixed.

it was a bit of a mess as I made a big push to get ready for an event. Went to the event and got covid. I managed not to be admitted to the hospital, but that is about all I can say for my illness. It’s been 2 months and I’m still not recovered. I can barely manage work and then just collapse. I’m legitimately don’t know how I am going to get it sorted.

LadyMacbethssweetArabianhand · 06/05/2024 18:50

Apart from tonight's dinner dishes, my house is clean and tidy. It usually is because I live alone and try to be fairly minimal and I'm retired. When I worked, invariably it was messy.

Thursa · 06/05/2024 18:50

Clean and tidy as usual. I grew up in a shit hole so I now can’t bear my house to be messy. If everything isn’t just so I am stressed until it’s sorted. It’s like a physical pain seeing the house untidy.

Kneeslikethese · 06/05/2024 18:52

Living room is fine.
Kitchen is fine but floor needs a sweep/mop.
Back room would be OK if the drum kit was set up properly (gig last night)
Bathroom is passable but windowsill full of toiletries could use a good wipe down.
My bedroom is a complete shit hole as usual.
Not been in the teens bedrooms so no clue.
