How messy is your house right now? BE HONEST

I think mumsnetters are not always entirely honest when asked about the state of their homes - thinking of that thread where everyone posted immaculate kitchens when the op asked for realistic pictures.

We’ve cancelled our bank holiday plans due to weather. Kind of taken the easy route by taking the kids to a toy shop for legos to keep them occupied so DH and I could get into a box set with a curry. House is not messy but certainly not immaculate. Haven’t done much this weekend so definitely feeling guilty.

Genuinely curious - how messy is your house this very second. Instagram has made me feel a bit sick to my stomach. Following a lot of house accounts as DH and I would like to build in the 5 or so years.

My kitchen is tidy enough but everything not cleaned daily could do with a wipe - fridge, bin, cupboard doors, patio doors etc. Sink and surfaces clean for now.

One living room is a war zone. I don’t even try to have that tidy. But our living room/diner is totally clutter free (house rule as I need one clean space for play dates without having to rush around like a crazy person). Bathroom toilet and sinks are fine but limescale could be dealt with. Grouting is a bit yuck.

All bedrooms need a dust and a vac which I may do later. Usually I make kids tidy rooms over the weekend but I told them they didn’t have to bother (they were well behaved whilst dh was sick last week which was a God send).

Washing was bad but I paid one of the kids to get through 4 baskets this weekend which they have managed. Dh will fold later.

What about you?

Oh yes & kitchen table = dumping ground & it’s nearly all my stuff! I also have piles in the lounge of magazines etc.

WoodBurningStov · 06/05/2024 17:10

It's 'ok'
Beds were changed in the weekend
My robot hoover did the downstairs hoovering and mopping this morning, so floors are ok
I dusted downstairs yesterday
Upstairs is ok, hoovered and dusted last week
Cleaned the sink and toilet on the weekend
So I guess my house is 'ok', tidy ish and clean ish.

DilemmaDelilah · 06/05/2024 17:14

Whole house could do with a hoover. Sitting room just needs a few things put away. Kitchen has a little bit of washing up to do - only a few bits. My bedroom needs a tidy, as does the office. There are a few shoes that could be tidied up in the hall. That's about it really.

RabbitsRock · 06/05/2024 17:18

Kitchen floor needs a mop too

It looks like there’s been some kind of incident.

This made me larf

TheCatterall · 06/05/2024 17:23

I’d be embarrassed if I had unplanned visitors turn up.

I seem to have an unfinished decorating project in every room and area. I have damp and issues with some walls/windows and radiators. So I have clutter and piles everywhere to work around as I moved things to start decorating or diy. But never seem to complete or be able to afford to
finish things.

things got worse 6 years ago when my oldest son had a psychotic breakdown and he’s never recovered. I had to bring him home from Oxford and have spent 6 years in turmoil with him in and out of our home/hospital etc. I have his bed/mattress:fridge/ cooker/clothes and all sorts in the loft/hall/garage and under the stairs as he’s sectioned for 2 years now. He won’t let me sell it and I can’t take it into hospital.

I work from home and run 2 businesses. I stupidly took in a lodger (old business acquaintance ) thinking it would help me get my shit together/get a routine to help beat my depression. That’s not working out. I’ve lost the home office as it was in the spare bedroom so I now have more shit stacked in the lounge/dining room.

things are clean. Washing is done often. Kitchen is clean. But there’s tools/clutter/vinted/charity/spare furniture everywhere.

I hate the state of my home it feeds my depression and the cycle continues.

this last two weeks I started a habit building tracker. I’ve spent just 10 or 15 mins on the garden and same for the house each day and I can see a change. I’m working on slowly slowly… little and often. I have adhd and struggle with the all or nothing side. So little by little is working quite well for me as I’m not finding it overfacing. I have two business buddies that run decluttering businesses so following their podcasts and being in their groups helps for accountability.

Absolutely horrific. Picked this weekend to try and potty train twins 😬

The piss is tidal.

Errolwasahero · 06/05/2024 17:24

@QuickDraining ours is much the same as yours. We need to do stuff to sort it but have been ill/struggling with life so just about manage to have cleanish kitchen, lounge and bedroom, bathroom. That said, as my lovely sister once said to me when the children were little ‘you won’t be lying on your death bed thinking I wish I’d kept the house cleaner’! Life moves pretty fast…

AllPrincessAnneshorses · 06/05/2024 17:25

Very. Like it usually is. Because I have things I want to do that aren't housework.Get off Instagram and stop caring what other people do.

Moier · 06/05/2024 17:26

Very tidy but only me in my 3 bed house.
But things are hidden..l haven't emptied the dishwasher and clothes still in tumble dryer.
My cleaner came Friday.
I'm hoping window cleaner comes too.. I've bird muck on some windows.

@TheCatterall i hope your situation improves soon, and your ds gets better 💐

AllThePotatoesAreSinging · 06/05/2024 17:27

On a scale of 1-10 it’s a 93. the big kid is in nursery tomorrow so I should be able to get it down to the mid 50s before he comes home 😂

Life is just easier when you keep your environment clean and tidy though. It supports you to get more done when it's easy to make a meal because the kitchen isn't cluttered and it's easy to take a bath because you don't have to scrub the tub first and it's easy to find clean clothes because they don't linger forgotten in a pile somewhere in progress.

Babadook76 · 06/05/2024 16:38

She didn’t say unrealistic has to be untidy or dirty. She’s saying the replies to the thread where people were asked to show photos were unrealistic. Realistically some people will have tidy houses, some messy and some filthy. Even the people with normally tidy houses will have messy rooms sometimes. My kitchen is normally immaculate, but if I took a photo now there’ll be a pressure washer and power tools on the floor and my dc’s dirty plates on the side. When the pp in that thread said take a photo as it is RIGHT NOW and 52 of the 61 photos show a fucking immaculate kitchen, hobs and sinks sparkling, an artfully folded tea towel and not so much as a dirty mug in sight, you KNOW that more than a few people have cheated there

That's just confirmation bias. Maybe there were those 52 people with immaculate kitchens because those people like to keep a very clean house and there were 300 other people who didn't post their kitchens because they weren't immaculate.

effoffwind · 06/05/2024 17:34

My house is immaculate

But ...

My children are grown and far away
Don't remember the last time I ever had a visitor
I grew up in an absolute health hazard shit tip and this affected me massively
It's very very quiet .. I'd trade a messy house any day to go back in time to rowdy children , noise , pals in and out

Lemonandlimez · 06/05/2024 17:34

All the rooms are hoovered and everything is in its place. Living room, Bathrooms and kitchen are clean and also tidy. BUT, don't you dare open a single Cupboard in this entire House Grin

Mammma91 · 06/05/2024 17:38

A shit show. I have washing piled high on my dining table to be put away, dishes in the sink, washing basket is full of dirty washing, beds not made (newborn + toddler + may weekend) and everywhere needs a good hoover and my floors need cleaned down stairs.

nothing like ‘D’P who told me I ‘look intimidating looking like that’ as soon as he walked in the door. I’m exhausted and don’t have any help with either kids. Pretty set and ready for Halloween, both myself and the house apparently.

user1471556818 · 06/05/2024 17:42

Spotless as currently having house viewings.
It's been a strange experience and I'm definitely going to keep some things up going forward , less stuff lying around .Quick hoover dust each day .
Already did a quick wipe round of bathroom , but more regular shower cleaning is being promised by dh as well so fingers crossed

RowanRowan · 06/05/2024 17:42

Tidy, kids are teenagers, loads of storage, a cleaner once a week and I’m not a big consumer.

Kitchen and bathrooms are cleaned/rinsed in case of showers etc as they’re used.

I don’t clean really apart from that ⬆️, laundry, ironing and change the beds is about all I do.

Hopper123 · 06/05/2024 17:43

Oh my goodness ours is horrendous top to bottom I've been ill the last few days and only started to feel better yesterday and weather was nice so we said stuff it let's go out and have family time so we just all went and played tennis at the park and then went out for dinner. Today I tidied up a bit downstairs but its back to square one again. Although once dishes are in dishwasher and the kids have put their toys backnin their baskets it actually wont be too bad. The kids tidied their bedrooms yesterday...today it's like a bomb went off again 😂 Still everyone back to work amd school tomorrow so my plan is to crack on this week and get it back on track.

Catza · 06/05/2024 17:47

Kitchen, bathroom and living room are presentable. We haven't made the bed this morning. Worse room of the house is our conservatory which is simultaneously my office, art studio, laundry room, boot room and dog house. I came in to give it a bit of a tidy this morning and ended up drawing for 5 hours with even more art supplies and cups of coffees out on my desk.

socks1107 · 06/05/2024 17:50

It's tidy and clean now but if you'd seen it this morning it definitely wasn't!
I've tackled the ironing, cleaned the house and tidied everywhere. It is not spotless though but it's clean enough. I wouldn't be embarrassed if someone were to pop over.
I need to polish the front room now and have lost all the enthusiasm I had an hour ago as I've sat down

Bluebellsanddaffodil · 06/05/2024 17:51

It is actually ok for once (well done stirs us). DH did kitchen/diner and hall yesterday. I did living room and downstairs toilet today.

upstairs is another matter!

Tlolljs · 06/05/2024 17:52

It’s ok tbh. Bedrooms dusted vacuumed Friday.
Downstairs today. I live in my own it doesn’t ever really get too bad. Dried two lines of washing yesterday so I've got that to iron. But iron has conked out , new one coming Wednesday.
Just eaten so dishes to do. Suits me.
