First of all, I have a huge phobia of rats. To the point I can’t function if there is one nearby. I have fainted before when seeing one as a teenager.

anyway, partner is currently out with a mate and won’t be home for a few hours. I cooked my dinner and left his portion on the kitchen counter next to microwave for him to warm up when he gets in, as I’ll likely have gone to bed by then. Went back into living room and put TV on not thinking anything of it, door to kitchen slightly ajar. I can now hear rustling noises. Really weird, the dryer and washer aren’t on and I can’t think of anything else that would explain the noise. It’s really loud though, like something has taken food from the plate and is dragging it along the kitchen floor/kitchen counter, I’m genuinely terrified and physically can’t move from the sofa to go and look. The kitchen counters are raised a few inches from the floor so would be easy for rats to be under there. I’m really frightened so please talk to me until partner gets home as I genuinely am stuck to the sofa with fear.

Did anyone suggest it could be the fridge / freezer self defrosting? That can make quite an odd scratching / cluttering type sound.

DrBlackbird · 12/05/2024 00:08

@Kidulthood2027 11 pages of discussion have carried on in your absence! At least tell us whether the salmon had been untouched or half eaten when you finally investigated?!

Mothership4two · 12/05/2024 00:10

The first time I ever saw a cockroach @Jenelliot was when one dropped on my head in a changing room in Gibraltar. I shot out into the shop in my pants and a tshirt yelling "get it off!" and everyone laughed except OH who managed to keep a straight face. Little b*gger disappeared under some racks. Brrrr!

Icebreaker911 · 12/05/2024 00:12

I'd toss a hand grenade in there tbh, it'll be a bit noisy & there'll be f... all left of your kitchen...but... it WILL get rid of it...

Isometimeswonder · 12/05/2024 00:51

She's gone. Whatever it was. The op is no more.
We'll never know....

Mothership4two · 12/05/2024 01:18

Wonder if OP will pop up in another four months, which is about the timespan since we had Choccyorange's crow thread (if it is indeed the same poster as has been suggested upthread)?

We could start taking bets on what type of troublesome creature will appear next time?

TortolaParadise · 12/05/2024 03:08

A dragon.

margymary · 12/05/2024 03:50

QuantumPanic · 12/05/2024 11:53

@Kidulthood2027 Are you currently legging it to Rathlin Island, having torched your house? What other reason could you have for not updating??

AllyPally7 · 12/05/2024 13:54

Do you have a landlord, if so maybe they could take a look or get pest control in? Or you could do that yourself? Alternatively, borrow a dog from a friend or neighbour for a few days. That should frighten any rodents away. Good luck.

CustardySergeant · 12/05/2024 13:58

The OP hasn't posted for a week, so it's pretty obvious she's unlikely to be reading or replying to recent posts.

She is probably reading and enjoying watching the billy goats gruff trit trotting over her bridge round and round in circles wondering what has happened

She's taken my advice re : tossing a hand
grenade in - but forgot to shut the door 🤣

Those people saying cat coz it's salmon, my cat won't eat salmon. She will only eat ham, cat biscuits or wet poultry cat food, and an occasional small piece of cooked chicken. Lucky really as my last cat stole stuff off the counter all the time.

Many years ago (50 or more) I had a large spider walk across the living room and I have a phobia of spiders. At the time I had a 15 month old baby upstairs asleep I just prayed she didn't wake up til my hubby got home. When he did he couldn't even find the damn thing.

Mothership4two · 12/05/2024 22:17

No my cat won't eat fish either @MaggieHM. However it's the dog's favourite. Hopefully it wasn't her dragging the OP's plate around

gareth99 · 13/05/2024 09:43

I'm sorry but I can't believe how upset everybody is getting about something so trivial. And suggesting that your partner needs to come home immediately is just hysterical. Yes, mice (rarely rats) can get in to houses (especially old ones). We live opposite a field full of field mice!

Just follow a few simple rules to stop them causing you trouble:

  1. Avoid leaving food around, ensure that it is in sealed containers or cupboards with solid backs
  2. Cover air bricks (ventilation bricks on the outside of your house) with a grill such as 'Mice mesh' to stop them getting through. Similarly block up any small holes in brickwork
  3. Another thing that can be effective and is very quick and easy is to get a high frequency device to plug into a socket in your kitchen. This puts off mice and rats (although you might need to be careful if you have pets because I think dogs can hear them too).
