Noises in kitchen, absolutely shitting myself

First of all, I have a huge phobia of rats. To the point I can’t function if there is one nearby. I have fainted before when seeing one as a teenager.

anyway, partner is currently out with a mate and won’t be home for a few hours. I cooked my dinner and left his portion on the kitchen counter next to microwave for him to warm up when he gets in, as I’ll likely have gone to bed by then. Went back into living room and put TV on not thinking anything of it, door to kitchen slightly ajar. I can now hear rustling noises. Really weird, the dryer and washer aren’t on and I can’t think of anything else that would explain the noise. It’s really loud though, like something has taken food from the plate and is dragging it along the kitchen floor/kitchen counter, I’m genuinely terrified and physically can’t move from the sofa to go and look. The kitchen counters are raised a few inches from the floor so would be easy for rats to be under there. I’m really frightened so please talk to me until partner gets home as I genuinely am stuck to the sofa with fear.

I have. It was terrible living with an infestation (we had a very bad one in a rented shithole) but that didn’t mean they were scary, or that they’re not cute.

Not to you maybe but that's the thing about phobias they are not rational, we had a rat infestation ,and I hate rats and mice they do scare me ,the scratching in the walls and the scurrying ,plus everytime I went on my kitchen i was petrified
I don't understand why people hate spiders
But I get that it's a phobia and they can't help it.

I can’t get my head around this (appreciating, of course, that phobias are not rational and most people have at least one).

What about similar looking animals - squirrels, hedgehogs and alike?

To be fair I’ve had a squirrel in my house and it was terrifying. It would dart around so fast. I was super glad when we got it out and boarded up the hole through which it came. I would be grossed out at a hedgehog in my kitchen too. I wouldn’t mind if a rat etc was out doing it thing in the countryside though. Just don’t want them near me in an enclosed space, especially my home.

But there’s is nothing to “get” with phobias or natural feelings of revulsion really. We’re all different.

We had a rat infestation they were far from cute ,and they destroy everything.

Exactly, phobias or disgust aside there are still very logical and practical reasons for being scared of having rats in your house.

Rottweilermummy · 08/05/2024 07:31

I'd bang a lot, or get a dog noise on your phone then maybe shine torch from phone into kitchen, the noise will scare it away , don't want to scare but rat possibly , cat just take salmon I would have thought
We used to have a cat flap in back door from previous owners of house , cat had got in during night, went to get bottle for youngest at time , cat ran behind settee, scared hell out of me, but I get your fear, for me it's just of thought of rats in house, bad enough in garden has to stop feeding birds 😢, hope u OK sending hugs

There might always have been mice in my old house (built in 1756) so I have always had cats as pets. Never had any trouble with mice. Recently though, one evening I definitely heard a determined rustling sound coming from underneath the unlit wood burner in the den. Without thinking, I instinctively made a hissing sound like a snake. Dead silence. Whatever it was made itself scarce and has not returned and that was several weeks ago. I think all animals have a built-in dread of snakes that is built into their DNA. Me too……

They chew through wires so your house burns down.

You don't usually have one mouse, and they're not usually scared away by a single sound! I'd be having a thorough inspection if I were you.

I had similar before, was absolutely convinced a rat was in my extraction hood in the kitchen. My neighbour came into look, took me outside and pointed out that it was indeed the wind coming in 😂😂 I’d lived here for 3 years by this point and this was the first time I’d heard it.

He agreed it sounded sketchy and also that he was convinced he was getting bit by a rat if he put his hand near.

So what happened when your OH got home?
What was snaffling the salmon?

Please save us OP from rampant curiosity!
