Noises in kitchen, absolutely shitting myself

First of all, I have a huge phobia of rats. To the point I can’t function if there is one nearby. I have fainted before when seeing one as a teenager.

anyway, partner is currently out with a mate and won’t be home for a few hours. I cooked my dinner and left his portion on the kitchen counter next to microwave for him to warm up when he gets in, as I’ll likely have gone to bed by then. Went back into living room and put TV on not thinking anything of it, door to kitchen slightly ajar. I can now hear rustling noises. Really weird, the dryer and washer aren’t on and I can’t think of anything else that would explain the noise. It’s really loud though, like something has taken food from the plate and is dragging it along the kitchen floor/kitchen counter, I’m genuinely terrified and physically can’t move from the sofa to go and look. The kitchen counters are raised a few inches from the floor so would be easy for rats to be under there. I’m really frightened so please talk to me until partner gets home as I genuinely am stuck to the sofa with fear.

Remember you are bigger than them and they are more scared of you. Bang on the door really loudly or rattle a tin. They will scurry back the way they came but get someone in asap to trap the b....... and find out how it got in. Good luck

Speckybecky123 · 11/05/2024 19:05

would love to know what it was after the time I’ve just invested in reading this! 🤣

Dozydor · 11/05/2024 19:07

Ffs what happened ? Did the rats eat her and the salmon ????????

Jenelliot · 11/05/2024 19:23

I would prefer a rat to a cockroach, they are my worst nightmare. It started in biology in school, the smell when the teacher lifted the lid on the glass tank was horrendous. The phobia has stayed with me for years, although I did have another episode with them while working in the south of England in a dreadful hotel, disgusting things.

SaltyBiscuit · 11/05/2024 19:30

My sister had a pet rat apparently he was lovely really friendly and very intelligent. Hope that helps a bit. Spiders are my biggest fear, think I would prefer a rat. 🙂

??????????????????

Milliemoo6 · 11/05/2024 19:39

Did I seriously just read all the way to the end of this thread and NOT find out what was in the kitchen?!

Bibliopuss72 · 11/05/2024 19:44

I was reading late on one night and heard a noise from my kitchen cupboard. Woke husband, he told me I was talking rubbish till he noticed the cats reacting. He had a look and said it was a rat. I checked and it was a hamster! Turned out the upstairs neighbour used to let it roam free and it got though into the pipe chase. Apparently it continued doing this after I moved out.

Oh God yes, I lived in Greece and the cockroaches there were nearly 2 inches long and heavy enough to sound like they were tapdancing across the marble floors 😱

ThePearlSloth · 11/05/2024 19:59

So my first thought was: poltergeist.

Rats smell and leave droppings. I had one that moved into my kitchen when I was on holiday once. There was no avoiding the smell and the other evidence (shit) that it was around. I never particularly heard it rustling. Eventually the rat terminator came and put poison down, it died sonewhere in the walls and the smell of death lasted for weeks. It was truly horrible…!!

so: poltergeist.

think I’d prefer a rat on balance

People who start threads and don't come back should be banned.

Harumph.

LubyLooTwo · 11/05/2024 20:12

It could be a ghost.

Theblondemum · 11/05/2024 20:52

This is a joke surely and just attention seeking !!! Anyone would just look but no you write a post on mumsnet 🙄

Sakuem · 11/05/2024 21:07

Curious, but did you find out what it was after hubby got home?
Was his dinner still intact, or some of it missing?
xx

Hankunamatata · 11/05/2024 21:20

Mice are bloody loud.

HereForTheFreeLunch · 11/05/2024 21:30

Have the rats got OP?
There was another thread some time back where the crows got the OP and her dog.

The animals are taking over one by one!

Opus17 · 11/05/2024 21:36

Wouldn't be surprised if this is the crow lady back to see if she could wind everyone up again

CoatRack · 11/05/2024 21:37

RIP OP

I moved to Australia, and found out the fuckers could FLY.

Kylie never mentioned THAT in her I should be so lucky, lucky, lucky lucky.

Patsy51 · 11/05/2024 22:00

Can’t you phone a friend or neighbour for help?

Well she could have, but unfortunately @Kidulthood2027 was eaten by the rat a week ago

Idontneedanotherhero · 11/05/2024 22:17

When I was a student we had mice in our shared house, a year of trying to get rid of them and no! Then the landlord got some new living room furniture and it turned out they had been living in the sofa. We had been sitting on them all that time!!!!

BrightenUpJay · 11/05/2024 22:39

Get an adult cat, plenty need adopting. He/she would be in there now sussing it out and less likely to be so cheeky with a cat stalking it.

No Way Facepalm GIF by Law & Order

That is most likely rat activity..ive moved into a flat with big drain rats in my loft where only the council can get up there. i hear them jumping about and huge nails scraping along the ceiling.your best to get a rat killer out theyll come put traps down. Dont be scared to the point where you cant move because rats and mice are more frightened of u and wont be allowed to be seen unless there is a large amount of them.

NotTerfNorCis · 05/05/2024 22:44

I've had rats several times in my house and they never once came into the house itself. They were in the loft, in the walls and under the floor.

I rigged up a Blink camera in the loft and got footage of a rat scampering about, rearing, and washing its nose. On camera it was cute.

Hope to have solved the problem with a 'rat gate' on the sewer pipe now.

Rat gate on sewer - how did that come about? (I mean how did you find out that was the issue and who is fitting the gate. Thanks
