There's a CF parked in my drive

Village fete day. Parking's a nightmare. Come back from my food shop to find some CF has parked on my drive. So I parked across my drive (dropped kerb but no double yellows or white driveway signs) to put my shopping away. Nearest proper parking is going to be a 5-10 min walk away I reckon - it's heaving! No specific AIBU but I know you lot love a parking drama.
Can I leave my car infront of the driveway and head out to the fete? It would block the car in ... but there's no note, no blue badge etc ... can I get a parking fine?
My DH thinks we should park properly and walk back in but tbh im enraged someone parked on my drive!!!

Well. Against the grain here and probably too late anyway but I’d give them the benefit of the doubt and park close by. It could be friends or family finding you not in have parked up and gone to look for you at the fair? As mentioned before that perhaps someone who knows you have said it wouldn’t be an issue etc etc. if your not careful you could end up with egg on face 😄!

If so then the friend / family member would presumably have the op’s number to either let them know they have parked there or to contact op if they come back to get their car and nobody is home. Even so, unless it was my actual parent’s house who would know that it’s my car, I still wouldn’t have the cheek to park on op’s drive regardless of them being friends/ family.
If they don’t have op’s number then they probably aren’t that much of close friends/family members anyway and so would still be being CF’s in my opinion.

Blatant place mark from me too - off to read the penguin bollard thread whilst I wait!

Seriously though, who in their right mind thinks it’s ok to park on someone else’s property. I mean you wouldn’t walk in someone’s house and sleep in their beds or use their toilets would you so why would you use their drive!

Can anyone enlighten me as to what happens at village fetes and whether it might carry on into the evening?. . . our local church fete runs from 2.00 to 5.00 and, to be quite honest, it's more of an outdoor jumble sale!!!!

ClaudiaWinklepanda · 05/05/2024 18:11

I wonder if the OP has got embroiled in Guess The Weight Of The Sheep or some other country fete activity and has lost track of time. Either that or she’s got off her tits on cider and has crushed the CF’s car with a handy combine harvester whilst singing The Wurzels.

A brief update (no conclusion yet sorry)

  1. We left the car as per diagram. Took plenty of photos of both cars.
  2. I am settled in at the fete, in a slightly damp gazebo drinking slightly warm white wine with friends. We are reading through all these comments and having a massive giggle. Everyone loves a drama.
  3. We didn't leave a note as my DD quite craftily pointed out - they don't know it's our car, they probably think we're a fellow CF (I've paraphrased, but genuinely proud of her deviousness)
I will post again later x

I think you should put a two week package deal somewhere, leaving tonight.

SeismicSalad · 05/05/2024 18:12

You’re melting MN down, OP 😂 I think it’s too early to go home, I would definitely have another wine.

I agree, it's such a weird thing to do if you don't know the person who owns the driveway.
Is there anyone on MN who has done this I wonder? I'd love to know their thought process.

Bank holiday parking thread…Let’s Gooooooo!

I’d block them in and go out. It would be worth the risk of a fine to me to be honest

This. I’d even happily pay the fine just to prove a point 😂 not that I’m petty….

Our village fair when I was little used to have stalls selling stuff, coconut shy type activities and small fairground stuff like swing boats. Then all that would get packed away and much drinking would happen into the small hours in the beer tent while the local band played.

OrchardBlack · 05/05/2024 18:15

Buzzing for an update.

Be aware OP police can and do lift vehicles if it's blocking a vehicle already on a drive, but I don't know if it would be different if it's legally your drive. (I'm a police officer and a lot of people don't know this and think we can seize just for it blocking a drive with no car on, which there are no powers for)

I find these threads extraordinary! Who does such a thing!
(I’m clearly place marking for the next instalment)

I came home from part time work once and found a bunch of workmen working for a nearby house had parked their van and set up a workshop on my drive...benches, wood stack, sawdust everywhere, the lot. When I asked the boss what he thought he was doing he said that the bloke he was working for didn't want the mess on his drive and had said I would be out all day and it would be ok. I made really clear that it was not ok and the bloke said could I not go back out and have lunch or something. At that point I went from polite authority to steely command and stood over them until they had not onely moved but swept up and cleared away the mess as well. So yes @NOTANUM they are out there.

You've solved it!
It's Goldilocks.

Daleksatemyshed · 05/05/2024 18:17

By now I hope the Op is stuffed to the gills with scones and awash with white wine, she deserves it. Thanks @OutOfTheHouse for the penguin bollards thread, that was such fun 😂

MassiveWordSalad · 05/05/2024 18:17

The CF has been identified at the fête and is being packed into the wicker man to round off the evening's festivities 👀 Happy Beltane folks!

DancingWithYouInTheSummerRain · 05/05/2024 13:24

I would leave it there with a note on saying that you are the property owner and the car on the drive is trespassing. I'd then go to the fate, visit the cider/beer/wine stalls and let the CF wait until you are legal to drive again before you move your car!

Honestly, who thinks it is ok to park on someone's drive that they don't know!

I can up the ante. This was someone we do know - the neighbour opposite us in fact! We're in a detached and we paid to have our drive enlarged to hold more than two cars when the house was built. Both sets of neighbours have three cars, and seem to have decided that they own the space outside their own house on the street. This means that we can't ever park any of our cars on the street outside our house, which is usually ok, as we don't need to.

However, DH was going out and was blocked by DD's car. There was only one car parked on the street, so he parked her car behind it. Yes he could have put hers back but at the end of the day we're every bit as entitled to park in the street as anyone else.

Long story short, DH came home to find a white car parked at the very end of our drive, blocking my car in and preventing him accessing our own drive! Turned out to be the neighbour who announced, "well you parked there!" and pointed at DD's car. Fucking selfish stupid entitled little prick. The arrogance of him thinking he's entitled to park in the street over us?! Biding our time to take revenge...!

Maybe in her post warm wine state, she walked too close to the welly wanging competition and is now receiving 1st aid from some over enthusiastic Brownies attempting to win their 1st Aid badge*

*my mum always said I have an overactive imagination.

My STBEH has been a complete arse today and made me cry so apologies @bubblesforbreakfast but thanks to you for posting and for all the posters with their entertaining and clever responses. You're calming me down as is the wine I'm having.

WhoGivesaSpit · 05/05/2024 18:24

oh I'm invested. Would happily take a fine for satisfaction of inconveniencing said CF.
Can't wait for update.
