The past election/PM changes have been horrendous. The visceral disappointment was awful each time.

I can’t wait to actually celebrate this year. I know, I know, Labour are going to set fire to the economy and tax everyone £3mil each and it’ll cost you 4 trillion a month to send you kid to private school, and all women will perish immediately because only Tories know what a woman is Hmm

But finally! It’s been a long fucking time coming.

The costs of moving & being eligible are extensive, probably similar to the taxes.
We are always being told PS fees are very reasonable and anyone on avg wages can afford them.... or isn't that true?

Changing jobs, moving house, having to find a new golf club etc isn't cheap and even the best state schools don't offer extra curricular that a PS will.

TooBigForMyBoots · 07/05/2024 13:20

The C4 line-up looks great. I'll probably watch most of it there, but check in with BBC and GBNews.Grin

But answer this one question- why is everyone who is a centrist liberal labelled a Tory now?! To what effect? Ok I admit I didn’t vote for Corbyn and voted LD because I just couldn’t stomach the car crash… but labelling all these people on here with kids in private schools Tories? I don’t have kids in private schools but they went to church schools and grammars so I sympathise.

Why does everyone now have to either have far left or far right views? If you just want bog standard middle. Who do you vote for? Where is the party for race horses into the future?

You think Labour in its current form is far left? Are you Braverman in disguise?

It would explain some of the odd stuff you have been posting.

Golf clubs? It’s fields for the ponies that cost the most. Dreadful.

No, I think Starmer and Reeves are pretty centrist but they are putting out some far left policies to the far left in their party, like the VAT on private schools. So I am naturally concerned we will end up with another bunch of infighters for the next 8 years.

VAT on private schools would only be considered "far left" in right wing America. Certainly not in most of Europe.

Araminta1003 · 07/05/2024 13:31

Godwin’s law @frankentall - well done.

Araminta1003 · 07/05/2024 13:31

Most of Europe would never ever tax Education

So the answer to your question

If you just want bog standard middle. Who do you vote for?

is: vote Labour!

Well then they better start showing they are in control of the MULES.

No they can’t, we’re the outlier generally

It’s a gimmicky policy and a sop as other stuff like no bonus cap and two child benefit limit are the same - and sadly some dc will be impacted by that

IClaudine · 07/05/2024 13:35

Which mules are you referring to @Araminta1003 ?

Araminta1003 · 07/05/2024 13:35

The red meat MULES.

IClaudine · 07/05/2024 13:36

Nope, sorry. Still don't get it. Aren't mules vegetarian?

No, probably not. And nor would anybody here; education is not the thing being taxed.

Labour aren't proposing taxing education, there is a free and perfectly good state sector, which is tax free.

Zonder · 07/05/2024 13:41

Far left policies 🤣🤣🤣

This whole “school” playground fiasco won’t end well.

Corbyn got a divorce because his ex wanted to send their DS to a superselective grammar in North London.
Right now the issue is “PrivAat”. Next it will be selective state, then super rich catchment state under scrutiny. Where do you guys think Starmer sends his kids? Super rich catchment state, of course, like the rest of them. It’s either that or partially selective state or RC church like Blair.
The Daily Mail just need to publish a list of where these kids all go. I hope they won’t but you lot are asking for it. State is not some holy grail, there are massive differences between the quality of state schooling. It’s massively hypocritical to send your DC to the best state schools that tons of private school parents cannot afford to get into!!!

Labour aren’t proposing to ban private schools, you do realise? Their tax policy on private school VAT doesn’t mean an attack on private education in its entirety; I understand that this will make private school parents angry and will have consequences for their families, but it isn’t a witch-hunt and in relation to the bigger picture of what is happening in this country (just look at rising rates of child poverty in this country, which were at 29% in 2021/2), many people are able to contextualise the outcry over suggested VAT changes on private schools.

Also, nobody has suggested that there isn’t a hierarchy of state schools - league tables, Ofsted ratings and published results make sure of that. It’s already been discussed on this thread and another linked thread about the ways and means in which parents will use their resources to get into the best schools. We all know this, it isn’t anything new.

There is a much wider vision from Labour to work towards lowering social inequalities (in Education, Health, Housing, reducing the tax gap, etc), which is much needed and yet the mainstream right media directs so much of it’s focus to the private school VAT issue; why do you think that it, what possible interest could they have in that?

While we’re on the subject of right wing media, your suggestion that the Daily Mail publishes the schools of children reflects quite tellingly on what we already know about that newspaper; it certainly also gives an insight into what your values are. Yes you can disagree with a Labour tax policy, yes there is a hierarchy within the state school system and yes there are Labour politicians who have sent there children to schools that aren’t poor performing state, but your choice of language ‘You lot are asking for it’ in relation to sharing confidential information about children is low. Earlier posters implied that it’s Labour supporters who struggle with civilised debate on here - I do hope they read your comments.

Yet more evidence that you can't rely on headlines. Especially when they're in the Express!
