To finally be looking forward to a GE?

The past election/PM changes have been horrendous. The visceral disappointment was awful each time.

I can’t wait to actually celebrate this year. I know, I know, Labour are going to set fire to the economy and tax everyone £3mil each and it’ll cost you 4 trillion a month to send you kid to private school, and all women will perish immediately because only Tories know what a woman is Hmm

But finally! It’s been a long fucking time coming.

Is it sunny where you are?

There seems to be a rash of negativity and well just trying to make people feel bad. Does it help generally?

Sun rash? Don't forget the sun cream

I don't know about a song for Labour, but Sunak's could be California Dreamin'.

I’ll show my age here @IClaudine, it would be a double A side, with Money, Money, Money joining your suggestion.

Thanks

I hope you are appreciating the lovely day. Lots of smiling people on the school run. And then on here it’s so..

Like I say can’t be good for the soul, does it help? It makes me think of that twits quote - negativity and sniping. Sunshine is better I hope it improves things 🙌

I don't buy the line that Labour has become enthralled with identity politics and "purity" as some have described.

What I see is a leader treading very carefully, as he is well aware the country is dominated by the right-wing press just waiting to make him a figure of ridicule.

He's actually done pretty well against that backdrop.

And the Tories are so bad even the Sun, Mail, Telegraph, Times, GB News can't save this sinking ship.

IClaudine · 07/05/2024 09:35

I am feeling pretty cheery. Sun is shining. Tories had a terrible few days and will soon be gone. I just wish Sunak wasn't being such a coward about calling a GE.

Some of us are already planning the drinking list for key seats.

Life is good!

That’s pretty much where I am too. I’m not convinced by all the turned off erstwhile Labour voters either.

We keep being told what huge vote losers Gaza and the trans issue are but that didn’t appear to be reflected last week. As you say, other issues take precedence. The parlous state of public services in a country where nothing works properly any more seems to be the biggest issue - and the Tory response is to offer tax cuts and invest even less.

In some seats there was a discernable Gaza effect - for instance Birmingham Central in the West Mids mayor election, although the size of it is sometimes exaggerated.

I have not managed to find any evidence that knowing what a woman was, was a significant issue in any seats.

Bring it on 😂

Yep

It doesn’t show up in some of these attacks which won’t help people

Absolutely beautiful today here too. Meanwhile I’ll have to do some work. Gotta earn some money to pay those ever increasing grocery bills and school fees. Nice view from my study, that makes me very happy. I’ll take the dog for a walk in the fields at lunch time, soul affirming.

We live in a very safe Labour area, my vote won’t change the outcome. I’ll still vote though, goodness knows who for. Maybe Tory for the thrill of it, something new, the excitement.

I’m not a drinker really. Costs too much and tastes awful. Prefer to save my cash.

I'd like to see this end stage Thatcherism finally die and the sociopathic tory party consigned to the history books. I hope the next government introduce voting reform so the tories can stop stitching up the elections by messing around with boundaries etc.

Totally agree - now we've had the chance to see how Thatcherism really fucked things up perhaps we can consign it to the dustbin of history at last.

We badly need a proper voting system too.

Yes, our MP was instrumental in closing ALL of our A n E services back in the day and maternity and then gloated about it in parliament saying they were 'proud of' what happened. It caused ambulances to queue outside for hours - much like everyone else is getting now - just ours began many years ago. Liberals tried to fight it but nope - every single once closed leaving mothers an hour round trip now for help and seriously ill an hour round trip. They also changed the ambulance reporting too meaning it looked like there was no impact both on waiting and on deaths.

I totally understand the frustration at the closure of A&E and maternity services at smaller hospitals, particularly those in rural areas with poor transport links, and I also acknowledge that people will often vote based on local issues that impact them directly.
However, I just wanted to point out that it was the Conservative Party in 2014 - when Jeremy Hunt was Health Secretary - who introduced what has been dubbed the ‘Hospital Closure Clause’ (Care Bill, Clause 119) making it both easier (no consultation needed) and quicker (allowing services to be downgraded or closed within 40 days) to close hospitals across the nation. Hunt initiated the proposals after he had lost an appeal at the High Court in which he was found to have acted beyond his authority in trying to close the A&E and maternity services at Lewisham Hospital - cuts that were also deemed illegal by the High Court.
Now I’m not sure if your local Labour MP at that time will be running for election this time, but I do know that Jeremy Hunt is currently a cabinet member of this Tory government in 2024.

Does that mean we can have circular discussions again about why it is perfectly understandable for a 56year old to need to have an illegal birthday party and then lie about it in parliament?

DS1 has asked if he can stay up to watch the GE this year. It's going to be a great first election for him.

Really exciting for him. I think this one’s going to be worth waiting for.

Oh you've ruined it now by mentioning Diane "two shoes" Abbot. Angela Raynor is ok in theory and does have an impressive story. Diane is a total hypocrite. You cannot campaign for the abolition of private schools while chosing private education for your kids I'm sorry. I know people have come up with various convoluted methods of excusing Labour MPs doing that but it just doesn't wash.

This whole “school” playground fiasco won’t end well.

Corbyn got a divorce because his ex wanted to send their DS to a superselective grammar in North London.
Right now the issue is “PrivAat”. Next it will be selective state, then super rich catchment state under scrutiny. Where do you guys think Starmer sends his kids? Super rich catchment state, of course, like the rest of them. It’s either that or partially selective state or RC church like Blair.
The Daily Mail just need to publish a list of where these kids all go. I hope they won’t but you lot are asking for it. State is not some holy grail, there are massive differences between the quality of state schooling. It’s massively hypocritical to send your DC to the best state schools that tons of private school parents cannot afford to get into!!!

But but it’s ok if The Child chooses private isn’t it? That what Labour posters on here seem to think anyway.

Though how a 9/10yr old knew how to apply for private schools in the first place, is a mystery. I mean they Must have researched all local schools, and found that they Preferred the private one. So that ok. Isn’t it?

Its only safeguarding if you don't know if they are a boy or a girl.
