For some strange reason it was put about yesterday that Susan Hall might have won, or that it was very close.

Wishful thinking on someone's part!

The free school meals pisses me off. They should remain means tested. Now the food quality and quantity is appalling and so much is binned. Total waste of time. For him to lead on that for his campaign literature was ridiculous.

The estimated total pay range for a TFL at Transport for London is £30K–£55K per year, which includes base salary and additional pay. The average TFL base salary at Transport for London is £35K per year.Aug 2, 2023

And this.

Doesn’t look too bad to me.

Now mark that take home salary against the average rent or house price.

I agree with free school meals for all and no means testing, like it has been in Scotland for a very long time. There are some children who don't get much to eat at home regardless of their parents' income and at least they are guaranteed something at lunch time. A lot won't eat school meals anyway, preferring to take a packed lunch. Presumably a little of our tax will contribute to that and I do not grudge it one bit. Means testing may be necessary for some things, like benefits for example, but it is a complicated business and can be quite demeaning. At school, every child should at least appear to be equal.

I could just as easily blame Theresa May who congratulated herself on making it even more difficult for police officers to conduct searches.

Yes indeed. That is a difficult one but it is hardly Sadiq Khan's fault that there are more knifings than there were, he doesn't go around stabbing people. It's not the case that there is violent crime all over London, only in some areas. Central government controls the police funding anyway, he would undoubtedly like more.

I thought TFL had an operating surplus this year?

They aren't that well paid. I think it is good that free travel is extended to family members, there aren't many perks with those very responsible jobs.

The thing is, as said in other previous posts, I lived in London for a few years. I have friends there. London has changed to somewhere I no longer recognise just in 15 years. So I feel like I might be entitled to an opinion.

No one can stop you having an opinion, but those of us who actually live in London don't have to take yours seriously.

Those of us who live here see all the problems but we also see all the amazing things about living in this world capital city that's 2000 years old, that has so many amazing things to see and do, so many wonderful people. We see the bad and the good.

When you don't live here you just see all the screaming tabloid headlines that of course exaggerate all the worst things, you talk to friends who complain about stuff, so you get a really distorted impression.

You don't recognise London anymore because you don't live here! Loads of things haven't changed at all or have improved for the better, how would you know.

Yep, all TFL fares.

TFL fares does not mean it's run by TFL

I'm on the Southeastern lines and yes pay TFL fares but it's run by Southeastern that's why it sucks. There's a whole campaign to get London Overground to take over the parts of the train network in the city because it's run so much better.

Bottom line, Londoners who are subject to Sadiq's policies have voted him back in twice, this time with an increased majority. End of story. Londoners, in general, support Sadiq and have chosen to retain him. And I respect that he keeps going in the face of an unbelievable and constant level of hate and danger from racist shitbags.

You're not kidding. I have seen some horrendous stuff on facebook, you wouldn't believe it.

I hope there will now be an investigation into Susan Hall and her social media activity. However given that Sunak refused to condemn her activities in PMQs this week I'm not holding my breath.

It was so bad the actual president of the United States attacked him and inspired all his racist base to do so as well. I'm not sure any UK politician has ever had so much global hate directed at them.

A friend saw her party bus yesterday pulled up on a roadside so drunk men blokes could piss in the bush.

delightful woman.

It's a Trumpian tactic - say you've won and then when you don't, say it's all a fix, we was robbed etc. Very stupid people will believe it, as they do all conspiracy theories.

This.
Already seen idiots on Twitter including broadcaster type berks crying that it's all a fix. 🙄
Straight away thought it's exactly like Trump.

If Sadiq didn’t achieve a single thing except universal free school meals he’d still have made a massive difference to the lives of London children. Means testing for food for children is demeaning and we aren’t Victorians distinguishing between the deserving and undeserving poor any more FFS. London is one of the richest cities in the world, it’s only right to ensure its children don’t go hungry.

Incidentally our billionaire PM with the tax dodger wife voted against FSM during Covid, which is another reason I wouldn’t spit on those greedy fuckers if they were on fire, let alone vote for them.

valensiwalensi · 05/05/2024 14:56

If you go on any of the “fight for my Britain” type pages it’s full of hundreds of posts by outraged, low IQ conspiracy theorists who think this is all part of some world reset for the elites to take control, or some cobblers.

I'm not sure. Bringing down the quantity and quality for all isn't really a win.

Two things have happened in the last 15 years that are not Khan's fault.

Firstly, 14 years of austerity. Every single thing has had a budget cut, and another, and another. Every single service. None of this is Khan's fault, it was a Conservative government choice.

Secondly, and this is just a human factor, you're 15 years older and don't live there anymore. Your lens is no more reliable than anyone else's who looks back a long way!

I don't live in a deprived area of London. But the other day I was shocked to see a young boy in school uniform begging for people to buy him food in Tesco. So many are struggling thanks to Tory cuts. Absolutely agree children should not go hungry. I am happy for my taxes to be used for that.

Here in Bromley it is the opposite. I don't know anyone - except me - who likes Khan.

Yep, depressing isn't it?

skippy67 · 06/05/2024 08:42

Oblomov24 · 04/05/2024 21:07

It was never gonna happen. khan was always gonna win. Loads of my friends in different Sw London mosques were told that there vote for khan was expected.

I don't believe you.

skippy67 · 06/05/2024 08:42

I don't believe you.

Seriously. Like, they were told to vote for him or... what? Or else? Was the imam standing in the polling centre meaningfully eyeing everyone? (For the hard of thinking: no. They really weren't.) Anyone who actually wanted to vote for Hall or Reform UK or Count Binface could have done so in perfect comfort and lied about it afterwards if desired; lord knows plenty of voters do. I doubt many Muslim Londoners were champing at the bit to vote for a racist Tory candidate anyway.

LBFseBrom · 06/05/2024 09:43

I agree, DreadPirateRobots, nobody is going to police your vote and people do not automatically vote for someone of their own ethnicity, religion, sex or whatever. Sadiq Khan is a moderate man when it comes to religion anyway, and believes in equality and fairness for all.
