For some strange reason it was put about yesterday that Susan Hall might have won, or that it was very close.

Wishful thinking on someone's part!

I don't really know what the Tories were doing with their choice of candidate, a Boomer suburban white lady, whose social media activity suggests she may be slightly racist, to represent an incredibly diverse city where the average age is four years younger than any other region of the UK.

Was that genuinely the best they could do?

Please can you show me where he says that he is bringing in the pay per mile thing because I can only find places where he says he won't.

Nope because I can’t find it either doesn’t mean it won’t happen
but then it’s just my opinion I just don’t trust him 🤷🏻‍♂️

Needmorelego · 04/05/2024 18:03

@LakeTiticaca well 60% of the voting population didn't even bother to vote and they will probably still complain.

Are none of you worried about the increase in knife crime 40 % since he has been in and the two tier policing of the met ?

genuine question

Knife crime is up nationally, policing is worse nationally.

What specifically do you think Khan has personally done to cause knife crime to rise?

It appears so.

The first choice candidate had to stand aside.

Exactly! Her entire campaign leaflet (got it through our letterbox) was whinging about Khan. I couldn't at all work out how she would improve things. She blatantly lied about being pickpocketed on the tube. She seemed to support racist groups on social media. If there had been a credible opposition, I was open to consider it but unfortunately there wasn't so we'll stick to what we know.

Vote Khan in again and spend another 4years complaining . Be careful what you wish for

I’ve not had to complain about him once which is why I voted tor him.

Oh, give over with the Boomer suburban white lady, FFS!

Her obvious shortcomings had nothing to do with her age, sex, location or skin colour.

She is a political lightweight with far right views and limited appeal to the majority of Londoners.

Was he the rapey one?

It would have been really good to have a good strong female candidate for Mayor but that wasn't to be. Susan Hall was also Brexity and a Trump supporter, she really was an awful choice.

shams05 · 04/05/2024 18:22

The reason the Tories don't put up a good candidate against him is then they'd have no one to blame for all the crime. A Tory mayor would be blamed just as sadik khan is blamed now.
If sadik khan is blamed long and hard enough it takes the focus off the fact that Tory underfunding of police has lead to increased crime.
It's not the labour mayors fault, his hands are tied because he hasn't been given the money by the Tory government. Add a Tory mayor into the mix and everyone will blames them entirely.

He has a budget of 17 billion though, that is not nothing. I would imagine that it would be possible to do a better job than Khan has with that much.

I met my partner and moved away during Covid, but when I lived in London I rarely met anyone local wasn’t overall happy with Khan’s policies. The man prioritises policies that support London children - free school meals, travel subsidies, clean air, he’s inclusive, progressive and pro-European. You can’t really argue with that in a capital city.

His hands are tied on crime and policing by central government although that has always been a stick to beat him with (no pun intended).

He’s also thought to be a decent guy - loves his wife, seems to have nice kids etc. So bloody refreshing after Bojo’s antics.

Shaun Bailey was popular in my time and area because he was a young black man and thought to be a good role model for young people in London, and profiled as someone who would resolve gang related knife crime. Turned out that was the same Tory racism in different guise.

Everyone outside London hates Sadiq. Useful for identifying prejudiced but rarely well-informed.

Here in Bromley it is the opposite. I don't know anyone - except me - who likes Khan.

IvorTheEngineDriver · 04/05/2024 19:26

That he won does not surprise me. That he won with an increased vote share does.

LBFseBrom · 04/05/2024 19:57

valensiwalensi · 04/05/2024 17:24

I know there was a bit more momentum to remember to vote for Khan in my area and not take it as a given that he would win as there is a sizeable anti ULEZ community here in SE London

Yes there is, mostly from the ignorant. I am glad he won, overall he is a good man and a good mayor but you can't please all the people all the time.

Yup

It's a victory for Londoners!

Cleaner air
Less respiratory paediatric deaths
Free school meals for kids
Free public transport for kids
Decent man with personal integrity unlike every Tory

I feel sorry for people who don't get to benefit from Khan's policies tbh

Exactly! 👏👏👏
