AIBU for thinking that Sadiq Khan has won the London Mayoral Election?

For some strange reason it was put about yesterday that Susan Hall might have won, or that it was very close.

Wishful thinking on someone's part!

The last news I read is he is in the lead.
Apparently the turnout for voting was 40%.
Pretty pathetic really. There may have been a few genuine times people were turned away due to lack of correct ID but really less than half of the population of London couldn't be arsed 🙁

Edited

The turnout for the voting was only 2% lower than last time round.
Context is everything.

HappiestSleeping · 04/05/2024 15:01

Such a shame on many levels if he is back in. 😞

SpeedwellBlue · 04/05/2024 15:05

I like how he's improved the bus service and decreased pollution via ULEZ. Kids have died due to pollution in London. https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-london-68068828.amp
Susan Hall and her ulez protester followers lied about Sadiq bringing in pay per mile.

Needmorelego · 04/05/2024 15:13

@Moonshine5 42% is just as pathetic to be honest.

Thing about the ULEZ is that it only decreased pollution in the city centre. Even by the Mayor's Office's own stats, the further expansions have made no difference and are really just revenue generators.

It's not far off the turnout of any mayoral elections in London.

It deters people from using more polluting vehicles, a good thing.

Great that he is raising money to spend on improving public transport

I met my partner and moved away during Covid, but when I lived in London I rarely met anyone local wasn’t overall happy with Khan’s policies. The man prioritises policies that support London children - free school meals, travel subsidies, clean air, he’s inclusive, progressive and pro-European. You can’t really argue with that in a capital city.

His hands are tied on crime and policing by central government although that has always been a stick to beat him with (no pun intended).

He’s also thought to be a decent guy - loves his wife, seems to have nice kids etc. So bloody refreshing after Bojo’s antics.

Shaun Bailey was popular in my time and area because he was a young black man and thought to be a good role model for young people in London, and profiled as someone who would resolve gang related knife crime. Turned out that was the same Tory racism in different guise.

Everyone outside London hates Sadiq. Useful for identifying prejudiced but rarely well-informed.

KateMiskin · 04/05/2024 15:57

I voted. Sorely tempted by Binface but voted for Sadiq in the end.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 04/05/2024 16:01

BBC says Sadiq Khan has won. Phew. Susan Hall would have been a disaster.

NarrowGate · 04/05/2024 16:03

Phew. Now Katie Hopkins’ crackpot cousin can eff off to GB News with all the other unemployables.

Janjk · 04/05/2024 16:04

A fucking disaster. Another 4 years of this shitshow. Loathsome and bad for London.

Newgirls · 04/05/2024 16:05

Great news! He has been great for London and seems to be a calm and intelligent person (a relief after that prat bojo)

murasaki · 04/05/2024 16:16

Good news. Disappointing result in my area but pretty sure it was Ulez related as an outer borough.

Dp voted for an independent, but that's his choice, he definitely didn't want a Tory win.

Is the pay per mile not a thing then? Thats what I didn't like. My Dad hates him, always banging on about ULEZ....my dad dont even drive 🤣 hes just a very angry man.

ConflictedCheetah · 04/05/2024 16:17

Delighted he's back in.

The tabloids are very good at whipping up anger in people who aren’t even affected by the policies they’re angry about 😬🙄🤬

Hélène79 · 04/05/2024 16:21

Thank fuck for that.

murasaki · 04/05/2024 16:22

Does anyone know where to find the results of the other assembly votes, the area ones and the others? I can't find anything yet, maybe they are being counted later.

Lonelycrab · 04/05/2024 16:22

Good result for London.

NinetyNineRedBalloonsGoBy · 04/05/2024 16:22

It's a victory for Londoners!

Cleaner air
Less respiratory paediatric deaths
Free school meals for kids
Free public transport for kids
Decent man with personal integrity unlike every Tory

I feel sorry for people who don't get to benefit from Khan's policies tbh

No. Sadiq isn't doing it.
