AIBU for thinking that Sadiq Khan has won the London Mayoral Election?

For some strange reason it was put about yesterday that Susan Hall might have won, or that it was very close.

Wishful thinking on someone's part!

It only taxes people with the most polluting cars.

Depends on your view. The Americans stopped at the equivalent of Euro 4 for diesel engines as the particulates released are big enough to drop to the ground and are thus not inhaled. The European regulations wanted smaller particulates that are more easily inhaled.

Those people who can't afford to keep updating their vehicles end up having to pay the tax now, so yes, you are correct, the tax does not apply to all vehicles, however it does hit many who are least able to afford it.

I am fortunate in that I own an old Land Rover. Since this is a historic vehicle, I am not subject to the ULEZ no matter how much pollution it belches out. I would prefer to use my other vehicle, which is a lot cleaner, but alas, the ULEZ prevents that.

Needmorelego · 04/05/2024 17:08

@Allfur that's what I mean - more traffic chaos and pollution has been created by the LTNs and School Streets because it pushes all the traffic into a smaller area. But all we hear about is ULEZ.
As a non driver but a daily bus (and Uber) user I am more effected by LTNs than ULEZ.

Needmorelego · 04/05/2024 17:11

@HappiestSleeping I don't know if it's my imagination but I'm sure I see a lot more "vintage" cars on the road these days. Not nice looking "classic cars" but some old banger that looks like it's from a 70s TV cop show. Are they exempt?

KateMiskin · 04/05/2024 16:25

Obviously. But most of those of us who voted think like this.

Yes exactly. He did win after all.

They sure are. Fortunately for me.

NinaPersson · 04/05/2024 17:13

I was hoping he wouldn’t win

Needmorelego · 04/05/2024 17:14

@Boomer55 until I had a Labour leaflet through my door for this election I actually thought Khan was Tory - because everyone supposedly hates him.
Bit embarrassing for me 😂

He destroyed Hall in the vote. I would have been very, very surprised indeed if he hadn't won; the whole "it's super close" thing sounded like some serious Tory wishful thinking.

ViscountessMelbourne · 04/05/2024 17:19

Needmorelego · 04/05/2024 16:32

Slightly irrelevant but....
I don't understand why there has been so much focus on ULEZ when it's Low Traffic Neighbourhoods and School Street schemes that seem to be causing the most traffic chaos and traffic pollution.

ULEZ and the congestion charge are London-wide mayoral/TfL policies, so they're live issues in this vote.

LTNs are imposed locally at the borough level and we weren't voting for the borough councillors.

There has been a bit of anti-LTN campaigning even so, but AFAICS those candidates have got no traction whatsoever.

Wonderfulstuff · 04/05/2024 17:20

It's weird how much ULEZ bothers people who aren't even effected by it.

silverneedle · 04/05/2024 17:22

So glad he won.

Westfacing · 04/05/2024 17:23

Hall looks like she's swallowed a wasp! Grin

valensiwalensi · 04/05/2024 17:24

I know there was a bit more momentum to remember to vote for Khan in my area and not take it as a given that he would win as there is a sizeable anti ULEZ community here in SE London

ViscountessMelbourne · 04/05/2024 17:26

I was listening to Ruth Davidson on a podcast and she said that she was baffled when a rogue Tory communications person, possibly after one two many Red Bulls very late on Thursday night, said that Susan Hall might have won it. Either it was a cockup or a deliberate attempt to undermine Sunak. (The latter is my theory not something RD said)

Needmorelego · 04/05/2024 17:29

@ViscountessMelbourne ah....that makes sense.
@Wonderfulstuff it sometimes feels people aren't even thinking about other issues - just obsessing over ULEZ.
It's the same with national issues. There is a certain "type" of person (daily mail middle England..... you know what I mean) that just goes on and on about immigration - not even stopping to look at policies about other issues like education or whatever.

No, but we are all paying for the traffic lights vandalised because of it.

Sureaseggs44 · 04/05/2024 17:41

Are none of you worried about the increase in knife crime 40 % since he has been in and the two tier policing of the met ?

genuine question

Bothers the people who are affected by it as well
maybe when he brings in pay per mile or the new tunnel charges or starts charging for ev’s he’ll hit on something that will bother more people
personally I don’t like the man there’s just something about the look on his face when he gets interrupted or someone says something that he disagrees with that’s not right

Please can you show me where he says that he is bringing in the pay per mile thing because I can only find places where he says he won't.

SerendipityJane · 04/05/2024 17:48

Maybe we need to change the electoral system ? I mean it's clear just winning more votes isn't enough to gauge popularity anymore.

Fourteen years of Tory government and public spending being cut to the bone probably have a fair amount to do with that. Police, probation service, courts, prisons, schools, social services, social housing, mental health and addiction services - all starved of funds and good staff, and none of those are under the total control of any local council or mayor. Crime always goes up when the economy is in trouble, doesn't it?

LakeTiticaca · 04/05/2024 18:00

Vote Khan in again and spend another 4years complaining . Be careful what you wish for
