To think she thought I was 10 years younger than I am

I was at the dentist yesterday. The receptionist asked my date of birth first, and I gave it , and she then asked my name. She then quiried if it was the ' somethingth' or the 'twenty- somethingth' and I confirmed the correct one. ( I referred to the month by name).

She said there was nobody coming up. Then she asked if I was at the correct dentists. I was because I always go there. She asked me if I was sure I was I was actually registered because they had no patients with that dob 1993. I was born in 1983. She finds me , and I have my check up.

Then I've been thinking, she didn’t check the year at all, so she must have took me as being 31, 10 years younger than I am .

But according to mumsnet, nobody can ever be mistaken for 10 years younger than their actual age, in the real world.

Yes, how embarrassing. It's very common on these threads though. I think people must expect blind belief and absolute agreement, which is strange.

I used to look very young for my age. At 40 I could have passed for 28. However, I know look every one of my years and more!

Same. When I was 33, I was rushed to hospital. I couldn’t give my details and the hospital staff described me as a female of about 22 years of age. When I had my first child the midwife told me that they had my dob down incorrectly. I told her that is was correct. I am now much older and probably look at least my age if not older 🤷🏼‍♀️.
My DP also looked younger than his years. When he went out with our eldest DC people used to think that they were siblings.
My DD is petite and is often taken for at least 8-10 years younger than she is so I think there is something in the stature theory.

KatyaKabanova · 05/05/2024 16:50

So people thought your partner was the sibling to your child?
How old were they both?

It isn't that outrageous, my dad was 20 years older than his youngest sibling. He could easily have been the dad or the sibling. In fact he was more like a 2nd dad to his sibling and him and my grandfather were more like brothers. Families come in all shapes and sizes.

TabbyMcTat2 · 05/05/2024 18:17

In all honesty when you are over 25 it can be hard to tell ages. I am late thirties and get mistaken for still being a teen but then on the other side, people constantly assume I am my neighbours kids mum (They are 10 and 8 and I babysit them at times.) The 10 year old looks even older than that so others clearly think I am at least 28 and that's at a minimum.
I think if you are short and on the slim side that can also add to people thinking you are younger.

You’re knocking in forty and people often thunk you’re a teenager??😂

TabbyMcTat2 · 05/05/2024 18:33

Yes, believe it or not.
Then other people think I am the mum of my neighbours kids as I said above. People's perception of age can be vastly different.
I am fairly short, softly spoken, quiet, don't wear much make up etc. It's also in the family. All the women in my family looked loads younger up until they reached about 55/60.

I see the op has done a runner, I guess embarrassed by her self, but I don’t get the absolute vanity required to want to look younger to such a level,

im vain, I want others to think I look good,I’m guess, as I don’t want them to think I look bad,not that I give it any thought , but to think oh my god I look so young the receptionist thought I looked so young she refused to accept my dob, knocked 10 years off, then acted confused when she couldn’t find me,I mean that’s a whole other level of vanity.

I didn't see the need to respond to conversations that other posters are having on this thread , that I'm not part of .

I hope you feel better after you second paragraph . I think you need to feel better. Confident and content people aren't nasty about strangers on the Internet. I wish you well , @Sillyjane , you seem to need some positive thoughts.

Well the claim was someone thought the father and child were siblings, my dad and GD were like that and people often thought my dad was his siblings dad. Unless that poster tells us the child was 2 and the dad was 40 it is possible.

GrandmaSusie · 05/05/2024 18:45

Why does this bother you? It would have made me happy!

No. That's quite different. No-one would suppose you were siblings if there was a 20 year age gap
You know what that poster meant, that her partner was so young looking he was mistaken for the child's sibling. Not a 20 year age gap sibling.
You know what she meant.

YANBU Several years ago I went to my GP and when she looked at my records she said she thought she had the wrong patient. I confirmed my name and DOB and she couldn't believe it. Roll on another 10=15 years and I doubt she would make the same mistake. Enjoy the compliment and congratulations on not looking your age. Remember growing old is compulsory growing up is optional. 😀

OldPerson · 05/05/2024 20:10

Oh please.

GP and Dental receptionists ask the date of birth of every single person who walks through the door. And every single person we speak to on the phone.

It's the easiest way, with so many accents and name spellings to narrow down the patient identity.

We honestly don't care how old you look, or what you look like. And half the time we can't see you.

And we certainly don't take a date of birth and check the patient over to see if they look their age.

We don't care.

And trust me, she was probably more sure you mumbled on the day and not year.

You obviously need to learn to speak more clearly.

But I sincerely hope you feel good about how you look.

I was explaining it is possible as you seemed to doubt it.

Yes, I do doubt it. Suggesting that it's because there could be a 20 year sibling age gap isn't really what they were claiming.

CestLaVie123 · 05/05/2024 20:48

Well done OP! I believe you. I got mistaken for 20 years younger the other day! It was by a teenager, but I'll still take it!😂

Neveralonewithaclone · 05/05/2024 21:00

People often think I'm my own grandchild. I am short though, and immature.

ThePerfectDog · 05/05/2024 21:06

YANBU OP, there are always people on here who struggle to comprehend that this happens and use it as an opportunity to be unpleasant and bitchy but it does happen.

Yes, I can believe that. People will deny it and get bitchy, but it's no fun being rammed into a buggy.

pineapplesundae · 05/05/2024 21:44

It’s not that unusual. My daughter is 33 and has to wear an armband so she can order alcoholic beverages. Just means you’re healthy.

I'm getting treated for cradle cap
