To think she thought I was 10 years younger than I am

I was at the dentist yesterday. The receptionist asked my date of birth first, and I gave it , and she then asked my name. She then quiried if it was the ' somethingth' or the 'twenty- somethingth' and I confirmed the correct one. ( I referred to the month by name).

She said there was nobody coming up. Then she asked if I was at the correct dentists. I was because I always go there. She asked me if I was sure I was I was actually registered because they had no patients with that dob 1993. I was born in 1983. She finds me , and I have my check up.

Then I've been thinking, she didn’t check the year at all, so she must have took me as being 31, 10 years younger than I am .

But according to mumsnet, nobody can ever be mistaken for 10 years younger than their actual age, in the real world.

Shops refuse to sell me Tena Ladies.

They say I look much too youthful.

It's terribly frustrating

Same.

YouAndMeAndThem · 04/05/2024 21:12

I have to use DOB to look people up on my systems at work, I never give a thought to what actual age someone is when they tell me the year. It barely registers to be honest. It's just numbers to be, I wouldn't read too much into it.

People thinking I'm early 20s when I'm in my 40s can be really bloody frustrating.

I don't think I have ever come across a 40 something and thought they were early 20s.

OK?

wutheringkites · 04/05/2024 21:04

I was in the group chat, dumbarse 🤣

So presumably a friend or family member who knows she isn't actually 12?

Yes, hence the 'why do you look...' That would imply the person who posted that knows she's not 12! 🙄

Tina O'Brien was in her late 20s when she played a schoolchild on Waterloo Road!

I don't know why people think it's some weird boast to look younger than you are - like I said in my earlier post, no matter how much younger you look your 40s will humble you. If anything I look older than my years now, no doubt my DD will follow the same path.....anyway, nevermind - you obviously know my DD better Grin

How is it a boast? People thinking I'm early 20s when I'm in my 40s can be really bloody frustrating. I'm treated like a child until people find out that I've been doing my job for decades. I'm a professional woman, so it gets tedious and sometimes upsetting. I've had comments made about me to my colleagues because people my age don't think they should be being lectured by someone "young and inexperienced".

It was also really shit as a teen when my friends were all clubbing and I couldn't get in anywhere. But as an adult it's far worse.

I'm sure you get mistaken all the time for your early 20s 😂🙄

Taken from a group chat today in response to my DD posting a photo of herself - unless you think I went back in time to prove a point on MN? 🙄

Oh god. Have some self respect.

Neveralonewithaclone · 04/05/2024 21:29

Actually I am your DD.

Neveralonewithaclone · 04/05/2024 21:31

I've told you before Mother, they said you look a hundred and twenty 😂

lemmein · 04/05/2024 21:31

What the fuck are you on about? Grin

People are very touchy on here when it comes to age/looks - bizarre!

Neveralonewithaclone · 04/05/2024 21:32

Ah, I'm only teasing, I'm sure you look very young indeed as does your DD.

notacooldad · 04/05/2024 21:33

I'm 59. I put a lot of time and money I to how I look because, well I have the time and money to spend on myself. However I am still 59. On someday I look bloody marvellous, other days , well not so much especially if I'm tired, had a lot to worry about etc.
I work with teens and families. A lot of nans that have guardian ship over their grand children are a year or two younger than me. However they look much older as if they have given up on life.. Quite frankly it's not surprising. I do believe a lot of how you age is down to lifestyle. The women I'm thinking about have often come from abusive backgrounds themselves, lived in deprived areas, lived below the poverty line and taking care of themselves through diet, exercise, they are usually heavy smokers and often drink. Beauty treatments etc has been impossible as they are doing their best to survive and bring up children who are also expierenceing difficulties and vulnerabilities. If you put me next to them I would look years younger. If you put me next to Liz Hurley I'd look like a witch!

One thing I've noticed working with teens is sometimes they like to know how old you are. I don't like to say if in case they get an idea of how you should behave. They do the guessing game and they've come up with everything from 34 to 63. It occurred to me, they usually put my age similar to the age of their main female carer as that is something they can relate to and use that as a point of reference.

How old people perceive you to be and why is an interesting topic!

Neveralonewithaclone · 04/05/2024 21:34

A friend of mine was 30 and her GP looked utterly perplexed and said 'I've been told a 30 year old woman with ovarian pains?' she really did look extremely young and was very very small and slim.

I've edited my post as it was shite.

It's an interesting subject and I was taking the piss, sorry.

I don't!

She does.

These days I could easily pass for 10 years older - like I said, your 40s humble you.

I remember when I was in my 30s someone replying to an op in a similar post with 'wait till you hit your mid 40s!' and I thought 'pfft, how the fuck am I going to age so much in 5 years?'

That poster was right.

Pooskah · 04/05/2024 21:38

Are you in South Manchester as I was stood at reception the other day and this happened!

@Pooskah And was it as the receptionist simply could not accept the op was in her 40s? So knocked a decade off?

I do wonder if this is it - my DD is tiny, very slightly built, even her hands are tiny!

When I looked younger I was similarly built, but I've hit peri so I'm a fat fuck these days.

Tina O'Brien looks slightly built too. Maybe it's more body shape that influences peoples perceptions.

@PriscillaPresssley no worries, I didn't see it - but I'm old and ugly enough to take it, so no need to edit for me Grin

Very likely, the woman I'm thinking of was also strawberry blonde with very pale skin.

Neveralonewithaclone · 04/05/2024 21:58

My son is also very pale skinned and can't buy a red bull without showing ID, he's in his late 20s. The type of skin that won't even tan, at all.

Ifearthishashappened · 04/05/2024 21:58

ThreePointOneFourOneFiveNine · 04/05/2024 13:31

Sound like she just misheard the year. I doubt she gave any thought to how old you are.

This ⬆️. You are overthinking it.

Yeah, my DD is the same - if she's caught in the sun she burns then goes white again, it really pisses her off.

I think celebs who can afford the very best of skincare/surgery still look their age. Botoxed, line free faces don't necessarily look younger, so there much be something else which makes people appear younger, other than just good skin.

I'm gonna go with body type, and that's why it all goes to pot in your 40/50s 🙄

WalkingonWheels · 04/05/2024 23:21

Nah, I'm fat. I do have extremely pale skin and blonde hair though. Even my hands and knees are young. I have had teasing for years for having, "baby hands". Best part is, I don't do a thing to my skin, hair, face or anything other than wash it. No fancy creams or treatments.

Yes, @Sugarcoatedalmonds I do. Funnily enough, that's why I said it. I'm sorry you can't grasp the concept that other people have different experiences to you.

Iwasafool · 05/05/2024 09:26

Neveralonewithaclone · 04/05/2024 21:55

I'm a red head with pale skin. I'm told I have very good skin for a 70 year old, I have elevens and laughter lines (crows feet) at the corner of my eyes but otherwise no lines or wrinkles. I put it down to wearing factor 50 every day and have done for years as the slightest bit of sun and I burn. I might be wrong but I look at my DIL who loves the sun, loves a tan and uses sun beds if there isn't enough sun for her and at 40 she is definitely more lined than I am.

I think my neck shows my age, maybe because I'm not as good with sun screen on my neck? I don't think my good skin makes me look younger than my age, your face changes regardless, people who botox don't suddenly look like teenagers.

Sillyjane · 05/05/2024 16:31

I see the op has done a runner, I guess embarrassed by her self, but I don’t get the absolute vanity required to want to look younger to such a level,

im vain, I want others to think I look good,I’m guess, as I don’t want them to think I look bad,not that I give it any thought , but to think oh my god I look so young the receptionist thought I looked so young she refused to accept my dob, knocked 10 years off, then acted confused when she couldn’t find me,I mean that’s a whole other level of vanity.
