To think she thought I was 10 years younger than I am

I was at the dentist yesterday. The receptionist asked my date of birth first, and I gave it , and she then asked my name. She then quiried if it was the ' somethingth' or the 'twenty- somethingth' and I confirmed the correct one. ( I referred to the month by name).

She said there was nobody coming up. Then she asked if I was at the correct dentists. I was because I always go there. She asked me if I was sure I was I was actually registered because they had no patients with that dob 1993. I was born in 1983. She finds me , and I have my check up.

Then I've been thinking, she didn’t check the year at all, so she must have took me as being 31, 10 years younger than I am .

But according to mumsnet, nobody can ever be mistaken for 10 years younger than their actual age, in the real world.

Some awful comments on here shows just how MN can be.
Op take it as a compliment.

Differentstarts · 04/05/2024 18:25

I think when you ask the same question a hundred times a day I don't think it really registers in your brain. Where I live someone has the same name as me at my gp surgery but is a good 50 years older then me iv been asked multiple times if my birthdate is 1950 something I'm 21 I assure you I don't look like I'm in my 70s

BrightonFrock · 04/05/2024 18:30

I'm thinking of some actors who I've always thought look young - Caroline Quentin for one. She went to the spa I go to once and she looks fabulous.

I’ll have to tell my dad - when she was on Strictly, he said “Bloody hell - she looks older than God’s dog” 😁

HermioneHerman · 04/05/2024 18:30

Spoiler alert....you do look your age because you are your age (general you, not aimed at anyone specifically). The idea that all 40-50-60 year olds etc look the same is just silly. 🤷🏻‍♀️

PotatoPudding · 04/05/2024 18:32

I know MN thinks no one could possibly look younger than their age but there are definitely some people who look years older, which is mostly down to how they style themselves.

I know, my point is that it's not surprising that people think you look young to have adult children, because you are.

Sometimes my comeback is well i started early i wanted to be free by the time i hit 40 got to get them cheap single holidays while im still young lol😂

Sound like she just misheard the year. I doubt she gave any thought to how old you are.

This. She must ask about DOBs all the time and probably doesn’t give it a seconds thought.

Also she may well have thought “wow she looks so old for her age” but she was hardly going to say that.

The most boring stealth (not) boast ever.

I know he's your dad but... Confused

This week I pretended to be surprised that a woman I'd just met had a son in his 20s. I wasn't in the least bit surprised, but she seemed to expect a reaction from the way she said it so I obliged.

Ha! I've done this so many times. You can totally tell when people are angling for compliments so I do it too. Inside though, I am thinking something entirely different 😆

Talk about throwing yourself bouquets. 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Neveralonewithaclone · 04/05/2024 19:31

If anyone asks me to guess their age and I think they look 60 I'll say 'gosh, perhaps 32'. If it's a man I'll add about 15 years.

Lwrenn · 04/05/2024 20:02

I'd honestly rather someone asked me what I thought they weighed as opposed to age, I'm genuinely terrible at aging people so if I go to young people think I'm trying to be nice and then I look like I'm lying, but if I go to old they're offended.

At least with weight you can just go about 2 stone under what you think as a solid rule. Think they're 15 stone, not a pound over 13.
Think they're 35? If they're only 24 you'll be hated forever.

KatyaKabanova · 04/05/2024 20:08

Oh god, I'm the same. If someone asks me how old they look I usually knock ten years off just to be kind. If someone tells me their age, fishing for compliments I say "wow, you look great!".
As pp said, social lubricant.

I do think its how you style yourself, hair, make up etc. My lounging around the house looks 20 years older than dolled up and hair done.

I find it strange these conversations where folk 'often' get told they look so much younger, I can see it in the context of children discussions etc but I can't imagine having a conversation apart from that where I didn't already know someone where I would be asking their age.

The few times I've been called young lady when out with my grandchildren I smile as I know it's someone being charming and friendly.

I don't doubt some folk do look younger but would just like to say 'self praise is no recommendation' and would like to see photographic evidence 😅

lemmein · 04/05/2024 20:19

I was always asked for ID till my mid30s - everyone commented on my age in complete disbelief.

I'm 46 now and prob look older than my years 😫

I think she probably just misheard though - I wouldn't be mentally calculating someone age in that situation, I'd just be inputting what I heard.

The most boring stealth (not) boast ever.

How is it a boast? People thinking I'm early 20s when I'm in my 40s can be really bloody frustrating. I'm treated like a child until people find out that I've been doing my job for decades. I'm a professional woman, so it gets tedious and sometimes upsetting. I've had comments made about me to my colleagues because people my age don't think they should be being lectured by someone "young and inexperienced".

It was also really shit as a teen when my friends were all clubbing and I couldn't get in anywhere. But as an adult it's far worse.

wutheringkites · 04/05/2024 20:33

I don't think I have ever come across a 40 something and thought they were early 20s.

BlackStrayCat · 04/05/2024 20:34

This thread is hilarious.

Yeah I totally understand this. It used to make me a bit paranoid too because I didn't think I looked particularly younger so I'd be questioning if it was something about how I presented myself that made me seem younger.

It's also really embarrassing getting ID'd in your late 30s when you're in a long queue at tescos - it's almost inviting others in the line to mentally guess your age. I'm kinda introverted anyway so any kind of attention that makes me stand out makes me uncomfortable.

My DD is in her late 20s in a professional management role and really struggles to be taken seriously (especially by males!) - shes very slightly built with a 'baby face' and could genuinely pass as a 12 year old child!!

I'm much more at ease now I look my age....if not older.

I get this a lot too. When I took my son to school on the first day of reception, the teacher thought I was the one starting school. Happens all the time.

I'm not sure why you'd find that funny tbh - how bizarre!
