To be completely shocked about someone I used to know

When my youngest was at primary school I really liked this woman who had kids either side of mine.

She was in the PTA equivalent and was just a nice woman. There was no drama around her.

I remember having a day off and went into the local cafe, and she invited me to sit with her friends. She was funny, warm and witty.

Significantly, she had friends of all ethnicities and her best friend was Asian.

Everybody will relate to being busy but I think if it was a different time in my life or we had kids in same year we would have been mates.

I am absolutely shocked that she is a member of a right wing political party and has a presence in that party, utterly and completely shocked.

I know it’s not illegal but God.

All three of my siblings are Tories, I’m not someone who thinks everyone has to think like me but I am stunned.

Mumsnet hates this, but I have had a physical reaction to the news. I am just Gobsmacked and weirdly let down and I do know that’s a stupid, irrational thing to say.

Political parties broadly want the same thing. The difference is the way they try to achieve it.

Kingoftheroad · 03/05/2024 10:43

EWAB · 03/05/2024 10:28

But a right wing party, not just a Tory!

If you’re bold enough to post on here then be bold enough to name the party. Either way its none of your business.

I’m astounded that you find it tolerable for your siblings but not this woman

this is what i cannot abide the lefties of
this country

Kingoftheroad · 03/05/2024 10:45

ShadesofPoachedSmoke · 03/05/2024 10:35

Of course it fucking does.

Politics is fundamentally about the way we want our society to function. It is the heart of everything about us as an individual, community and society. How you vote reflects how you feel about your fellow humans and you can't get more of a moral judgement than that.

Goodness you should join the snp this is the aggressive stance that they take - look at them now

ComtesseDeSpair · 03/05/2024 10:45

Very few people support or endorse every single policy or viewpoint of the political party they choose to belong to or vote for. Most people align themselves with a handful of core important issues which they think that party has a better stance on than others. The idea that you must be a massive facist because you’re to the right of the political spectrum is just as daft as the idea that you must be a communist if you’re to the left. You’ve ultimately no idea which issues your former friend aligns herself with, and either way there’s a massive spectrum of “right.”

Trainbother · 03/05/2024 10:47

Springchickenonion · 03/05/2024 10:25

I'm not a Conservative supporter.

But someone's political viewpoint doesn't define them as a good or bad person OP.

OP talking about a far right party though. That does define someone, or are we saying not all Nazis are bad?

IvorTheEngineDriver · 03/05/2024 10:47

If it's not a banned political organisation, then so what?

Only boring people select their friends from among people with identical political views.

Sugarcoatedalmonds · 03/05/2024 10:48

I don't think you can be a decent person and be right wing tbh. I'd be shocked too!

DrJoanAllenby · 03/05/2024 10:49

I'm right wing and I do not support Labour (obviously) or the conservatives.

I'm currently at sea with who to financially support but vote tactically (against Labour).

I don't support extremist groups and would like to know what you deem as being a right wing extremist group!

Trainbother · 03/05/2024 10:47

Which UK party aligns with the Nazi party?

No party in the UK is looking to exterminate a class of people. Equating immigration controls to the holocaust is a step too far no matter your political beliefs.

The hyperbole on this thread is ridiculous.

OP I think you need to get a grip. Having friends from all political standings ensures that you don't view life through an echo chamber.

Springchickenonion · 03/05/2024 10:51

Mental note. Don't reply on the first page of a thread. Because when people disagree with you and point out why. You then agree you where wrong. But because no one reads past the first thread I will now be tagged and replied to for my first comment 100 times over and basically being called a fool 😅🤣

Kingoftheroad · 03/05/2024 10:53

ShadesofPoachedSmoke · 03/05/2024 10:41

@Kingoftheroad what the heck is fascist about voting for certain policies? And what do you think those people who are voted in are going to do - implement their choice of policies maybe??? 🤔

Fascism includes telling people how to vote - exactly what you’re implying.

this happened in Scotland during independence referendum and it has caused long lasting problems.

Snp have self combusted. Look at some of they’re policies and tell me this is what you would like.

I like Keir starmer I dislike Sunack but would never ever judge anyone for their opinions

Exactly. Bit bored now of the 'oh I'm so accepting and tolerant, freedom of speech for all! Unless I disagree with you that is!'

But a right wing party, not just a Tory!

So Reform, Reclaim or BNP then.

This would be an absolute dealbreaker for me. All 3 are racist and xenophobic. Reclaim is Lozza's vanity project and he seems to be barely hanging on to the last threads of his sanity, Reform are terrifyingly right-wing but disguise it by sounding reasonable, wearing decent suits and not having visible tatts and the BNP are a just a bunch of thugs.

Support for any of them would be an absolute deal breaker for me. I was very low contact with my SIL and her husband because of their revolting racism. They fucked off to live in Australia, so it's not an issue any more.

I can understand it making you feel rattled, OP, I bet it's making you doubt your judgment.

How dare you use this language on here. I don’t care who you are but using this terminology is totally out of order

Jesus Christ get a grip. What does right wing even mean anymore?

CheesexCrackers · 03/05/2024 10:26

Someone's political view point absolutely defines them as a good or bad person.

Who's defining good or bad here?

Trainbother · 03/05/2024 10:47

Wow. So I’m a Nazi because I couldn’t vote for Labour. This is the type of disgusting language used by the hard left - y’know the apparent ‘nice’ party

Quitelikeit · 03/05/2024 11:01

Ofgs

The right wing parties are not committing any crimes and people are allowed to think how they hell they like. They are also allowed to support political organisations as they see fit.

Just as you strongly believe in your political views that’s no different from them.

If you can be assed enough to judge, think and write about it well good for you!

Trainbother · 03/05/2024 11:02

What? Did you vote for a far right party as your alternative to Labour? If not, you're good.

Ugh. This kind of nonsense is so irritating.

'wah wah wah you're calling me a Nazi because I didn't vote Labour'

WHERE did she say that?

ClipClopperDontStopper · 03/05/2024 11:03

so many toddlers on Mumsnet

Springchickenonion · 03/05/2024 11:04

I'm feeling no one is being particularly nice to each other on here... so! Who do you all support? 🤣🤣

Yes it absolutely does.

mitogoshi · 03/05/2024 11:05

Does she have a new partner? Someone I know changed politics to extreme right wing after meeting a new partner, spend all day watching gb news when not working. Most bizarre

DonnaBanana · 03/05/2024 11:05

Significantly, she had friends of all ethnicities and her best friend was Asian.

Uh have you seen the leader of the Conservative Party? Being right wing doesn’t require you to be racist, it’s just a common trait. It’s like how being left wing doesn’t require you support gender self identity even though that’s common.
