Another poster who thinks everything was better in the past 🙄 I’m guessing from the Viz reference you’re into music from the 90s? And good for you, music in the 90s was phenomenal. But so is music from whatever era you’re young and having fun. It’s the soundtrack you live by.

So if you’re one of those grumps who don’t get the hype or think it’s mediocre or say ‘music was better in my day…’ perhaps it’s not because the multi award-winning talented billionaire mega star Taylor Swift is ‘overrated’ - maybe you’re just past it.

Nah!

There has been a huge shift in how music is made now. It's generic, artificial and the use of digital technology makes all current pop music sound the same. There is no individuality either, speaking of female 'artists' it's actually all about how little a woman can wear while prancing around on stage because what else is there to give? Nada! Nothing at all!

I am not anti 'modern' music at all. There are still some great house tunes being made, but you won't really hear it mainstream and a lot of work and soul goes into it. Generic pop music not so much.

I think the major issue is she's very average with but has cultivate an incredibly intense and borderline insane fan base who have all drank the cool aid of her pr team.

It's horribly cringey, all of it, her dance moves her songs and her fans. I think the tide is just starting to shift and people are finding the whole thing dated. Taylor swift fans give a lot of people the ick.

She plays her own instruments and writes her own songs.
She's reached billionaire status.
She's in the middle of a sell out world tour and more dates are being added all the time to existing ones.
Her latest song and album has just broken records (doesn't seem like the tide is turning).
All without resorting to the usual 'sexy sells' tactics.

I want to be this level of average!

TonTonMacoute · 30/04/2024 20:14

IMO performing in your pants is sort of ‘sexy sells’.

End of the day she’s rated as she’s rated. Her songs (the ones I’ve heard, which is not all of them) sound derivative and unoriginal, but if people like it fine. Good for her.

One of the things I LOVE her for (my dds are fans) is that she agrees - she can’t dance.

so she tries, laughs at herself and every teen in the crowd gets a most valuable lesson!

Lots of Taylor Swift fans are teenage girls. If they are giving grown adults "the ick" which is usually used to refer to sexual relationships then thank fuck for that, it's about time something gave adults the ick for teenage girls!

Why on earth have you brought sex into it? That’s very disturbed thinking.

Soigneur · 30/04/2024 20:27

What do you mean by overrated? She does what she does extremely well and millions love her for it.

Her music is not to my taste and I consider it harmonically and melodically unadventurous but art is after all in the eye of the beholder and most people are more interested in her lyrics than the music itself. Her fans, who appear to form a significant part of the population, rate her very highly indeed. And they are the only ones that matter.

bunsnroses1 · 30/04/2024 20:33

I think she's brilliant and have tickets to see her in June. I love her talent, her work ethic, politics but even I am wondering if (whispers quietly) she might be becoming a little over-exposed? She's everywhere you turn at the moment.

Rowansiskin · 30/04/2024 20:35

Not this again. Why aren’t we talking instead about why people don’t go on and on about disliking male artists the way they do about Taylor Swift.

takemeawayagain · 30/04/2024 20:35

I think she's had some good songs. I heard all the entries from her latest album that were in the top 40 last week and none stood out in any way. Instead of putting out 30 mediocre songs I think she should have put out 10 good ones.

CarInsurance · 30/04/2024 20:38

I used to love Keanu, all through my teens, 20's 30s and now 40's. For about 28 of those years EVERYONE said to me he was a shit actor, didn't understand what I saw in him etc etc. Now he is the ultimate man for most women.

I like TS, if you don't I'm sure she won't think it a great loss. Move on with your life OP.

Thought I should add, I still love Keanu (if your'e reading 😘)

Lots of people don’t like male artists too. I can’t listen to Justin Bieber, Robbie Williams, Sam Smith and Lewis Capaldi.

The thing with these types of threads, and any kind of discussion really around successful, talented women, is that it brings out the high school mean girls.

Liking or disliking her music is irrelevant, I don’t like Beyoncé’s music at all but I can still acknowledge that she is a massively talented and hard working individual. I can understand why people are fans even if I am not.

Some people just can’t see any woman being successful without having to put her down for stupid reasons - i.e she is a billionaire multi award winning song writer, halfway through a successful world tour with what now appears to be a record breaking new album - yeah but her dancing is cringy/she only writes about her exes (said by people who don’t actually listen to any of her songs and just read tabloids).

CarInsurance · 30/04/2024 20:46

God yes, all that saccharine shit the likes of Beiber, Robbie Williams, Sam Smith and Lewis Capaldi come out with - no nuance or thought in most of the lyrics. The "poor meeee" twee shite that always tells a story of a man who, for no reason at ALL some woman simply walked away from... Staggering amounts of self denial. At least TS owns it.

stayathomer · 30/04/2024 20:47

Every time I listen to a song of hers I think ‘oh that’s quite good’, I listen again, hear a lyric or the way something goes musically and I go ‘ooh, that was well done.’ Next thing I know it’s fully in my head and I’m singing it! Teenage me would have loved her the way I loved Kylie! (Early 90s!!)

80s child here and I totally disagree, I think pop is as good now in the last ten years or so as it was when Baby one more time, genie in a bottle etc was out- Annemarie, Olivia Rodrigo, Billie Eilish, Duo Lipa. Might not quite beat those days but definitely hold their own!!

Disgusting thinking. Also factually incorrect.

During there eras tour only 5 percent of attendees were under the age of 18, with the largest demographic being between the ages of 35and 64 making up 58 percent of the audience. 37 percent being 18 to 35.

You really need to learn to Google.

Also anybody on Instagram or tiktok can see the change. I have seen so many clips laughing at her and her fan base just in the last few weeks.

I'm on both and I haven't seen anything like that. Quite the opposite.

No I don't need to Google because unlike yoi I don't care who her fans are

You were the one moaning about the ick like that wasn't a wierd over reaction to someone liking a pop star

You seem weirdly obsessed with her fan base for someone who finds her cringy...

You might want to put those awesome Google skills to work and find out how algorithms work...

This

I like heavy metal, TS, or Beyonce for that matter are as far from my taste in music as possible

But its just creepy watching all the bitter people crawling out of the woodwork to whinge about a successful woman

I actually sort of agree that Taylor is overexposed right now, she has been everywhere and her relationship with Travis has exacerbated that even in the UK, so god knows what it’s like the in States where he is a major star in his own right. I wonder if that’s why she has done very limited promo for the album and won’t be going to the Met Gala - to try and limit her exposure. We all know the media love nothing more than to build someone up to tear them down, and there’s only really one way she can go from where she is. I think many people are getting fed up of her at this point and will gladly rejoice in her being put back in her place. Just look at the number of threads on MN which are started to positively talk about her/her work, compared to the amount like this - people are tripping over themselves to say they don’t get it and she is overhyped and her music is average… I think she is being very careful.
