Well am I?

OP posts:

I think she seems like a genuinely decent person/ role model for teens and that is a very good thing.

Personally I find her music really average and not to my taste, but I'm in my thirties and not really the target audience (although I do have friends who love her too).

I just say all the best to her and what she's doing. She's pretty harmless and there are much worse people that are held in high esteem (Andrew Tate, anyone??!)

TheTwirlyPoos · 30/04/2024 10:45

I dont really understand where the idea that her target audience is tween girls has come from. The latest album is really not child friendly nor relevant.

Anyway that's by the by but fuck me these threads are getting tedious!

steppemum · 30/04/2024 10:53

My dd is a fan, so we sat and watched the whole Eras tour video together. It was nice, she is obviously genuine I would say, her fans like her so - Meh.

But I found all her songs very samey, and I would not have been able to recognise any of them if I heard them again as being from that concert.

So in that sense she is a good generic singer who has great PR, and good for her. Why not?

If those people saying she isn’t talented could write and record eleven albums, win 14 Grammys and countless other awards and then partake in a world wide tour grossing over a billion (so far) where they perform live for 3 hours just to show us how anyone could do it and it doesn’t take any actual talent then please go ahead.

Anyway, it’s cool these days not to like Taylor Swift, or to say her songs are crap (tbf though she doesn’t seem to actually release her best songs so lots of people might not know them). No one is forcing you to like her or listen to her.

I am a Swiftie but I do have to admit I am not feeling her new album yet, hoping it is a grower!

I totally agree with you on every aspect of your post!
(No songs on the new album that I like as much as Karma just yet that’s for sure…..)

TheTwirlyPoos · 30/04/2024 11:13

It's so bizarre how so few people are able to just say 'I don't like x' without feeling the need to somehow criticise it.

There is no possible way that you listened to Blank Space, Reputation, Evermore and All Too Well and thought they sound the same.

Also baffled by this. Yes, Shake It Off, 22 and Cruel Summer etc are radio-friendly bops but they're absolutely not representative of her range.

Anyway, who really cares what ploppers randoms on the internet think? I think she's fucking marvellous and it matters not a whit to me if others don't understand why.

Love, a 50-year-old indie kid (and reformed music snob) who's looking forward to dancing all night at Swiftogeddon in a few weeks 😀

beguilingeyes · 30/04/2024 12:01

Nobody cares what you think.

This again 🙄. I think Beyonce is ‘overrated’ but I’d be fed up if there were threads about her every other week. For some reason it’s only ever TS though. If you don’t enjoy her music, good for you - but this need to declare it at any opportunity is the new ‘I’m vegan!!’. No one cares.

Anyway, Reputation is one of the best albums of all time 🙂.

Because Taylor is the biggest selling artist of 2023.

Of course there are going to be more threads about her and more polarisation.

When Beyoncé was the biggest selling artist there were plenty of posts online about her being overrated.

It comes with the territory.

Uricon2 · 30/04/2024 12:15

I know next to nothing of her music and very much doubt it's my sort of thing, but the same has been said about every popular artist since the year dot. There were certainly parents rolling their eyes at their bobbysoxer offspring clamouring to go Frank Sinatra's performances and I'm sure the huge contemporary popularity of Mozart bemused those who preferred J S Bach.

As a role model/idol for young girls, she seems better than many.

I'm not saying she hasn't got talent. I'm saying she seems much like any other pop star. Forgettable. Catchy songs that are.....ok.
Seems to base 90% of her music on dissing exes. Irl people who go to the tabloids or bleat to friends after every break up are kind of annoying and derided. I have no idea why swifties think when she does it she is somehow 'empowering'.
I think she is a thoroughly marketable, pop singer. Like a hundred others. This is why to people like me it is a mystery why she is in another level of success compared to Miley Cyrus, Katy Perry, lady gaga, Ariana grande etc who are all very successful but TS is out on a limb in terms of success. Its baffling.

wompwomp · 30/04/2024 12:29

PostItInABook · 30/04/2024 08:10

Unless you are some sort of expert in the things she has achieved success in, you have no credibility or knowledge to decide she is overrated. Just say you’re not a fan of her music and move on. Though, quite why people feel the need to announce this (or anything for that matter) on social media I don’t know. Ordinary people have such delusions of grandeur nowadays. No one cares if you don’t like Taylor Swift or mushy peas or that your kid did a shit.

Edited

Well someone asked do we answered 🤷🏻‍♀️. What a weird thread this would be if no one said anything

TheTwirlyPoos · 30/04/2024 12:45

The other poostars you've listed don't do shows that span over fifteen years of music which they have written most of themselves they don't play multiple instruments. They don't do shows that last nearly four hours.

You can't honestly say that there are hundreds of other musicians who have the talent of swift. Come now. This is where it gets silly.

And it's a weird thread from the off because it's a weird thing to ask. Literally no one cares. Listen to who you like and go about your business. It's so so weird that there are this constant flow of threads about swift.

It's not really baffling. She is very good at her job only a small part of which is singing. She has business acumen which men would be praised for. But when it's a woman its all faux naive "its baffling why she is so successful". Because heaven help a woman be actually good at what she does and be praised for it 🙄

There are lots of factors that don’t apply in the same way to the other artists you listed.

  • Has achieved big genre shifts, mainly country to pop, without alienating either fanbase
  • A highly parasocial relationship with her rabid fanbase keeping them invested in her music and personal life, and the links between the the two.
  • Very relatable storytelling to the average listener, strong songwriting in general
  • No major controversies, a ‘clean’ and not very sexualised image, suitable for all ages music and live shows, cross generational appeal
  • She does everything at a high enough level to make her the complete package basically
ihaveapermit · 30/04/2024 14:55

I’ve tried to hear whatever it is her music that has so many people entranced, but I just can’t. It’s boring and formulaic and her voice is adequate but not amazing. So I tend to just ignore all of the hoopla. It’ll be someone else in a few years. People who love her though really can’t stand anyone criticising her which gets a bit over the top.

OldHabitsDieScreaming · 30/04/2024 16:08

These threads are completely pointless.

The people that get it, get it.

The people that don't, don't.

If you genuinely want to try and understand why she has so many fans, you could try listening to more than just the chart hits. But realistically, most people won't do that, and of those that do, some will still not like her music. That's ABSOLUTELY FINE. I mean, I could write reams about why I think her voice is actually fantastic, and how (a lot of, not all) her music speaks to me in a way that knocks me sideways. But at the end of the day it's irrelevant. People are different and enjoy different things.

What's unremittingly dull is constant fucking threads bitching and moaning about a woman whose only crime has been to make music you don't personally enjoy. Just give over. For the love of God, give over. This incessant need to proclaim how much you don't like something is a really weird way to spend your day.

CurlewKate · 30/04/2024 16:51

Her music is not my taste. However, her politics, her mindset and the message she sends to young women most definitely is.

pimplebum · 30/04/2024 19:22

I am happy for my daughter to like her as she stands for body positivity , is a cat loving feminist who stood with dignity when Kanye west shamed himself and came through the Kim lies drama with aplom

As far as we know no drink/ drugs and no stupid social media comments in fact she is musically talented ( even though I don't like all her songs) positive clean living woman

I really hate "cool" people jumping on bandwagons to hate pop starts

PeanutAndBanana · 30/04/2024 19:24

toastofthetown · 29/04/2024 13:50

I'll tell you something right now. I'd rather burn my whole life down than listen to one more second of all this bitching and moaning.

Love this

Screamingabdabz · 30/04/2024 19:40

Another poster who thinks everything was better in the past 🙄 I’m guessing from the Viz reference you’re into music from the 90s? And good for you, music in the 90s was phenomenal. But so is music from whatever era you’re young and having fun. It’s the soundtrack you live by.

So if you’re one of those grumps who don’t get the hype or think it’s mediocre or say ‘music was better in my day…’ perhaps it’s not because the multi award-winning talented billionaire mega star Taylor Swift is ‘overrated’ - maybe you’re just past it.

TheTwirlyPoos · 30/04/2024 19:44

And then the straw man arguments come out about how 'people who love her really can't see her criticised'. Which is funny given that's literally the point of these threads. Seems to me the people obsessed about making over the top ridiculous statements about Swift aren't her fans...

Anotherparkingthread · 30/04/2024 19:44

I think the major issue is she's very average with but has cultivate an incredibly intense and borderline insane fan base who have all drank the cool aid of her pr team.

It's horribly cringey, all of it, her dance moves her songs and her fans. I think the tide is just starting to shift and people are finding the whole thing dated. Taylor swift fans give a lot of people the ick.

Shes in the middle of a sell out world tour and her new album is breaking all sorts of records...but if it makes you feel better to say the ‘tide is turning’ go ahead I guess.

She’s doing quite well for someone who is ‘average’.

🤣
