I'll tell you something right now. I'd rather burn my whole life down than listen to one more second of all this bitching and moaning.

Aaron95 · 29/04/2024 13:50

Popularity and talent are not the same thing. What nobody can deny is that she is very popular. She is probably the biggest music act in the world at the moment.

SuperGreens · 29/04/2024 13:56

In what way, by who? The young girls who love her? I think thats a bit silly, all pop stars are overrated by that yardstick. I love the story of how she got her music rights back and shafted those private equity men who were trying to screw her financially. For that alone I dont think she is overrated. But I wouldnt pay to go see her, Im not her target audience, although I do like some of her songs, just as I like some of Harry Styles, but wouldnt pay to see him either.

Allshallbewell2021 · 29/04/2024 13:59

YABU
The woman is in her own category. So talented and so powerful.

I love her and I parent a gold standard Swifty.

TheGrimSqueakersFlea · 29/04/2024 14:02

Mumsnet needs a Taylor Swift board. I'm not sure what's worse, the constant moaning about her or the cult like groupies

OldHabitsDieScreaming · 29/04/2024 14:07

YAWN.

AIBU to think it's weird how some people expend so much energy on something they profess not to care about?

Oh, Is it that time of the week already?

Must be. There hasn't been a "Kick Taylor Swift " thread for a few days Confused

I think there's been that many tedious, 'Taylor Swift needs to get back in her box' threads now that there's enough material for her to base a song or two on Mumsnet on her next album. Good news for Travis Kelce

This is a great idea! We have a royal board after all.

I don't think you need to be a cultlike groupie to not understand "overrated" as a criticism. Who decides these ratings? Is it like a league table? And what would "appropriately rated" look like? It's all a bit silly and reeks of envy. And I am absolutely not a Swiftie. I'm way too old for a start.

Taylor says it best...

SpeedyDrama · 30/04/2024 06:20

This again 🙄. I think Beyonce is ‘overrated’ but I’d be fed up if there were threads about her every other week. For some reason it’s only ever TS though. If you don’t enjoy her music, good for you - but this need to declare it at any opportunity is the new ‘I’m vegan!!’. No one cares.

Anyway, Reputation is one of the best albums of all time 🙂.

OverTheCountryClub · 30/04/2024 06:23

No she's not rated enough! I always have liked her but was absolutely blown away by the new album!!! I think it's my favourite album of all time now. Her lyrics are so beautiful and some of the songs are just haunting. That being said, obviously if you don't like her then just don't listen!

BritishBeatleMania · 30/04/2024 06:26

She is a highly successful singer songwriter. No art is ever to everyone’s taste but she clearly appeals to a large number of people.

“overrated” is an unpleasant way to describe someone who is successful. It stinks the same as people who say The Beatles, Queen, Elton John etc are overrated.

if you don’t like her music don’t listen. I manage not to play her albums on loop. She is someone who is talented and caught a mood at the right time. I think it’s great to see someone succeeding. Especially a (relatively) young woman.

Same with Billie Eilish.

(ETA I know there are many other successful women. These two have just been in BBC headlines this week)

652needtogetup · 30/04/2024 06:27

Honestly I only know a few of her records from when DD was a fan when she was younger and they’re really catchy. Going on those songs I don’t think she’s some sort of song writing genius but I don’t think it’s just about that these days. She’s obviously brilliant at marketing herself and people must love her songs and her so I suppose it depends on which facets of her you think are overrated. Lots of people I know aren’t particularly bothered by her but I think that’s probably because my kids are older and into other artists now.

Good luck to her I say (although the putting her music back on tik tok whilst other universal artists aren’t allowed to isn’t great ImHO).

CurlewKate · 30/04/2024 06:33

Wondering how long it'll be before someone comes along to say they've never heard of her! There are always people who think it makes them look clever, or intellectual or SOMETHING to say things like this. It doesn't.

Soontobe60 · 30/04/2024 06:36

Her music isn’t my cup of team, so I don’t rate that, but what I do rate is the way she has worked so hard to become the woman she is today. For that, she has my utmost admiration.

MissScarletInTheBallroom · 30/04/2024 06:40

I can't really get into Taylor Swift. She releases new albums all the time but a lot of her songs sound very similar to each other. I really like a couple of her songs and would have them on a playlist but if I listen to one of her albums I get a bit bored.

But I'm glad so many other people love her music because she is the female superstar the showbiz world needs IMO. I love her zero fucks attitude.

Whenwillitgetwarm · 30/04/2024 06:41

Theres something for everyone so it’s not fair to say someone’s overrated.

That said I don’t trust modern music sales figures because if you’re rich and powerful, and backed by a strong label they can be manipulated. Taylor’s latest album is available on 19 different formats, this includes multiple different album covers and versions where there is a different bonus track. Her most rabid fans will buy every version pushing up sales. Meanwhile Adele’s biggest album came in one version on 2 formats. Her record were almost entirely individual purchases.

In addition, Taylor’s people game Spotify by ensuring her songs are inserted into random ‘you may also like’ Playlists. Therefore you could select Travis Scott and within 30 mins a Taylor Swift song will appear. These artists are nothing alike. This will be counted as a stream/sale.

The charts are fake and just used as a marketing tool by those with the power to do so. It’s not like the 80s/90s where you had to go in the store and buy a physical album. I don’t believe she’s sold anywhere near as many records as people like Madonna or Michael Jackson at all but her figures back up the hype meaning her tours sell more and that’s where the real money is. You have to hand it to her marketing team.

Edited

Actually, she's what, 34? 35?

I think I first heard of her in about 2010 so she was famous back then but nowhere near as huge as she is now.

I was actually just thinking about this yesterday in the car, that it's very unusual for a female artist to be so massive but to only just be reaching the peak of her stardom (perhaps she's not even there yet but it's difficult to see how she can get more successful than she is now) in her 30s.

I don't think she's going anywhere and will still be drawing in the crowds 10 or more years from now.

boobot1 · 30/04/2024 06:48

Her and Britney are prime examples of what marketing effectively can do.

wompwomp · 30/04/2024 06:52

I agree. She's marketable, catchy and works hard. Like a whole lot of other singers. I have no idea why she's this phenomenon

Justcallmebebes · 30/04/2024 07:17

I get that my 8 year old granddaughter loves her. I don't get adults being into her at all

TheGrimSqueakersFlea · 30/04/2024 07:36

@HelenaWaiting What part of my post are you not getting?

Any thread about Taylor is either bashing her or banging on about her like she's the messiah. We have a royal family board so why not a Taylor board? She gets enough attention to keep a board active.

Personally I don't see the appeal. I don't like her music but I don't envy her

I think asking if Taylor swift is overrated is overrated. Don’t like her, don’t listen to her

This! It’s just lowest common denominator boring conversation. Let people like what they like, if you don’t like it…don’t listen.
