Can you read the sign, Adam?
It says ‘Caliphate is the Solution’.
The protest is happening in Germany. ‘Caliphate is the Solution’. I can easily see why people think this ‘means that they are trying to bring a caliphate to Germany’. And that is without reference to the nature of historical caliphates and their expansionist nature, or to more modern attempts at creating a caliphate that crossed international borders.
I am surprised that only one poster has picked up on the language used. When was the term ‘Lösung’ last used in a similar context in Germany? Any guesses?
Back then, people were calling for ‘Endlösung’. That was ‘the Final Solution’. 6 million people were murdered in a mechanised, industrial method. You wouldn’t want waste time dealing with people individually when you can just group them together, after all.
Now, I am using the word ‘people’. The death toll was, of course, much higher. But the six million ‘people’ that faced the Final Solution were all Jewish.
Calling for a Caliphate as a Solution when anti-semitism is on the rise all the way around the world? Yes, I do think this warrants publicity and discussion because I really don’t want another European (or world) war to break out.
And I don’t blame people for being worried about this.
