There's a lot of people just shutting down discussion and not using critical thinking here. Islamic state is the far right. And yes, it's possible to fear islamist men and white supremacists. The difference is that everyone agrees that white supremacists gathering in 1000s and marching to declare a fascist state would be scary. For some reason, because these are Muslim extremists, the token response is to pretend it's not happening, or wave it off.

@AdamRyan

"Our freedoms have been fought for, in WW2, against the rise of the far right across Europe including the Nazis"

Actually there is an argument that the German Nazis were left wing (clue being in the name National Socialists) being anti capitalist and collective ownership.

The key difference between it and communism being a strong element of racism and racial hierarchy.

Oh give over. Churches are going by the wayside because educated countries are growing out of religiosity - except the Americans, that is. They are bucking the trend.

Religion is in decline among democrats but not republicans in the usa

AdamRyan · 29/04/2024 12:25
  1. 1100 people is not a "large group"
  2. Other news organisations are reporting this was a legal protest, closely policed and that the organisers are likely to be defined as "illegal" in Germany soon
  3. There are no Islamist groups with any chance of being elected in Germany or anywhere else
  4. No caliphates have been forced successfully anywhere, even when the majority population supported it.

Therefore OP may feel "petrified" but it is not based on any credible risk of a caliphate forming in Germany.

That is a new one. If you say so. I'm sure you know more than most scholars of history and political science.

Planesmistakenforstars · 29/04/2024 12:28

I'm German. I'm more worried about the rise of the far right in Germany.

Well this is only going to further fuel the far right in Germany (and the rest of Europe.) Plus they are far right, albeit a different flavour than the white nationalists you're talking about.

To the contrary, our former home secretary Suella Braverman basically encouraged over 2000 far right protesters to protest in London and "protect the cenotaph"

https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.theguardian.com/politics/2023/nov/11/suella-braverman-accused-of-fuelling-far-right-violence-near-cenotaph

She didn't find it scary at all.

@Planesmistakenforstars thank you! I think it's funny posters saying they are more concerned with the Far Right... You could not get more far right than Islamic state!!!

That's quite a stretch. Your racism is showing. Did you post with the intention of causing a stir?

Underthinker · 29/04/2024 12:38

RedMark · 29/04/2024 11:58

I live in Germany. It's not going to happen. As pp has already said, the rise of the afd is far more worrying

Yes but logically the main concern wouldn't be them actually succeeding, which would be very far fetched indeed. The bigger concern would be enough extremists wanting it to happen that we get an increase in use of violent means to achieve their aims.

Absolutely it works both ways. I always find these sort of discussions are helped when posts are held up against the hierarchy or disagreement. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Graham%27s_Hierarchy_of_Disagreement.svg

I’ve never seen that before! Thank you for posting it. I wonder if we could persuade MNHQ to turn it into a sticky or post it onto every thread with a political debate?

I do worry that people no longer want to engage with arguments. Which is ironic considering how confrontational people seem to be becoming. But there is a lack of critical thinking compared to when I was younger. I do wonder if that is my environment (I am no longer at uni or with uni friends who like to debate or play devil’s advocate) or simply that discourse has changed.

Hopefully this thread standing means mnhq haven’t given in to demands to delete.

Some of these bigger topics get shut down, especially if it’s women raising issues with any ideology

Let people discuss imo

“But of course middle class families can call out these views because they don't live in these disconnected areas or educate their children in the schools and keep saying their progressive Liberal views, whilst moving to nice areas with traditional schooling and western values. At least it makes them feel good about themselves.”

Yes I love this and it does take me back to my uni days where we would have to show that we had thoroughly engaged with and considered other stances and argue our points backed up with facts. I am neurodiverse so it helps me to know when someone’s arguments have merit.

Islam isn’t a race though is it.

Arabs and asians are often equated with it though, and considering the amount of anti-Palestinian, anti-Muslim, anti-Pakistani propaganda I've seen over the last few weeks, I can confidently say I know what the OP is trying to do here and the fact they are racist.

DifficultBloodyWoman · 29/04/2024 12:46

I’ve just scrolled through the thread again and wanted to post my observations.

A few people have said they want this thread deleted.
A few people are posting like goady fuckers.

If you want this thread to stand, please focus on the topic, not the posters. Be respectful even when critical to avoid being accused of <insert whatever-phobia or something-ism you like here>.

mrsrussel · 29/04/2024 12:48

Anyone who gets there news from Fox is a racist. Whether closeted or not.

goody2shooz · 29/04/2024 12:50

I’m far more worried that we live in a country that continues to supply weapons to facilitate the mass murder and starvation of innocent people in Gaza, that is happy to let this country crumble (health, education, welfare, infrastructure etc etc)blame everything bad on immigrants and continue the rotten systems that allow this to happen while big business creams off huge profits. A few Muslims protesting about Islamophobic reporting? Nah. And one holds up a daft placard? Nah. And especially not if it’s ‘reported’ by Foxx

EasternEcho · 29/04/2024 12:51

1100 protesters, in a country of over 83 million people? And reported by Fox News no less. I'm quivering.

I have friends very much like this, I know longer feel I can have chats with them for fear of saying the wrong thing... Everything is only from their narrative, there is literally no debate. They don't realise how protected they are inside their bubble..

Did you actually think about what I said? I said it's possible to fear both white supremacists and islamists. I'm not sure why you're talking to me about Suella Braverman. Once again, this is another post in the thread where raising concerns over Islamic state is shut down.

I have friends I won't discuss this with because they are from the same background and demographic as me, but think their views about "the real state of the country" are better informed than mine because they "don't rely on MSM and seek out a range of views".

I find it impossible to discuss because it just comes across as ill informed prejudice.

Hopefully that's not what you are doing OP. I assume you aren't from a white, mc background.

It's a sensible statement. Politics isn't a straight line from left to right, it's more of a circle, or at least a horseshoe.

Left wing extremists and right wing extremists usually have a lot in common.
