Yes or no, what do you think?

My personal opinion is that it's not basic and I'm partial to a cheese and pickle sandwich from time to time.

Basic = something that lots of ordinary people like.

Kalevala · 27/04/2024 14:21

Yes it's basic. It's not unusual or complicated, it's a common, quick, two filling sandwich. I don't understand your AIBU as it is also delicious.

JamSandle · 27/04/2024 14:22

Never sure what people mean by basic. It's not fussy, easy to make but really hits the spot!

AhBiscuits · 27/04/2024 14:22

You can't beat a cheese board. Lovely cheeses, pickles and crackers. Having virtually the same stuff as a sandwich and suddenly it's basic.

Have you tried cheese and mango chutney?

If you wanna go a step up, a brie and mango chutney tostie is the dogs bollocks. Especially with left over spinach shaak for dipping. Fooking lush.

Basic as fuck.

But delicious.

I love a basic sandwich and cheese and pickle is one of the best. I’m not so much a fan of fancy sandwiches. Pesto on pasta yes. Pesto in a sandwich no.

Cheese & pickled onion or cheese & picalilli are equally fab!

verabarbleen · 27/04/2024 19:11

Have you been on Tik tok op? 😂

Floralnomad · 27/04/2024 19:13

Basic unless you’ve made the bread and pickle yourself in which case it is a slight step above basic .

ErrolTheDragon · 27/04/2024 19:23

Actually...
A combination of a tangy cheddar and the vinegar in the pickle means it's almost certainly not basic, but rather a little acid.

INeedToClingToSomething · 27/04/2024 22:36

I would call it "classic" but not sure why something "basic" necessarily is negative (as you seem to imply). Basic can mean simple which can be a very good thing.

The young person's meaning of basic:

These particular senses of basic started out as African-American slang. In this context, the adjective was originally used as a way to call someone out (usually a woman) on immature or obtuse behaviour. As the term achieved widespread usage, people began to use it in reference to material displays (drinking pumpkin lattes, wearing Uggs, caring about brand names) that they believed to be indicative of shallow behaviour.

sprigatito · 28/04/2024 12:13

I find it funny that people consider cheese and pickle basic... grew up poor and cheese and pickle was a luxury sandwich, for cafes, picnics or birthdays. Ditto tuna mayonnaise, egg mayonnaise, ham and roast beef. A basic everyday sandwich was peanut butter, jam or marmite.

JaninaDuszejko · 28/04/2024 12:15

So I would say that a cheese and pickle sandwich is NOT basic because it's neither bad behaviour (the original AA use of basic from 1984 song lyrics using it to describe a woman who is having an affair) nor shallow behaviour (2009 lyrics describing women wearing designer labels famous for their logos as 'basic bitches'). It's an honest, non pretentious, simple but classic flavour combination.

GreyCarpet · 28/04/2024 12:16

Of course it's basic. It's not an adventurous sandwich filling.

But I'm not really sure why it matters or why you care?

Toast it too and I’m in

Oh! I had completely forgotten about toasted cheese and pickle sandwiches! Might have to buy some Branston!

AdoraBell · 28/04/2024 12:21

I voted YANBU. For me it depends on the ingredients. Strong mature cheddar with a spicy piccalilli and sourdough bread is good for me.

Treelichen · 28/04/2024 12:38

Very basic but very tasty too.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 28/04/2024 12:44

I don’t care whether it’s considered ‘basic’ - I could really fancy one now. Branston (or my own apple chutney) and extra mature Cheddar only, proper butter, no dastardly mayo or ‘spreads’ - and really fresh bread.
