Yes or no, what do you think?

My personal opinion is that it's not basic and I'm partial to a cheese and pickle sandwich from time to time.

I don't understand this use of the word 'basic'. It seems to be just another stick to beat people with.

Eat what you want, how you want. Try to be healthy. It's just food. You don't have to ascribe moral or social value to everything you put in your mouth.

It may be basic, but it's delicious...

Yup, this. Basic isn’t an insult here.

Cheese and beetroot too. Delicious!

God my DH eats that. Bizarre! And I like beetroot, just not on bread with cheese. The weirdo!

PotatoPudding · 26/04/2024 22:55

100%

Whats the definition of basic and are you using basic as a negative term?

Basic and simple is good

Cheese and pickle is a combination that cant be easily beat, although Cheese and lettuce for some reason is a fantastic combination, I dont know why

Cheese, lettuce and mayonnaise - lovely! But it has to be proper crisp iceberg.

Overtheatlantic · 26/04/2024 22:57

Pickle as in gherkin?

ErrolTheDragon · 26/04/2024 22:57

Depends on the quality of the bread, the cheese and the pickle.

GellerYeller · 26/04/2024 22:58

Cheese and pickle with soft cheese on the (granary) bread instead of butter is not basic, it’s fantastic.

Librarybooker · 26/04/2024 22:59

It’s a classic, only basic if you use cheese slices or mild cheddar and sliced bread.

in Sainsburys years ago I discovered their very basic cheese and pickle sandwich contained mustard. That’s well weird! Use better cheddar

thirdistheonewiththehairychest · 26/04/2024 23:03

I love basic.

notprincehamlet · 26/04/2024 23:05

Ottolenghi probably makes it with spiced unicorn and shoes so no

misssunshine4040 · 26/04/2024 23:09

I think op is referring the tik tok trend where there is a remix of Sharon Watts from Eastenders taking about a cheese and pickle sandwich and calls it basic ......

Bernadinetta · 26/04/2024 23:10

For those who don’t know (from the replies, some do and sone don’t) it’s a quote from Eastenders a couple of years ago, from Sharon, “Cheese and pickle sandwich? Basic…” which for some reason is going viral as a tiktok sound and with a remix song 😁

Depends. Sliced white, mild cheddar and supermarket own brand pickle thinly spread, I guess so. Big doorstep of multi seeded whole grain, sharp mature cheese and home made pickle from the village fete, not so much.
Its an old fashioned 70s sandwich from the days when it was ham, egg, chicken, jarred paste or corned beef. And being the most economical of those if cut thinly, probably gave it the reputation you're referring to.

Asantesauna · 26/04/2024 23:13

Not basic if the cheese is grated, its on decent bread and you’ve popped in some lettuce and cucumber. Yum.

ErrolTheDragon · 26/04/2024 23:21

A cheese and pickle sandwich, whether basic or not, is more interesting than a Tik tok trend.

agncndmkd128494 · 26/04/2024 23:26

Yes it's basic, but is basic bad? It's still delicious!

LightSpeeds · 26/04/2024 23:26

Most sandwiches are 'basic'. You can't get too much between two slices of bread.

I like cheese and pickle sandwiches (and many others).

TuesdayWhistler · 26/04/2024 23:32

It's almost as basic as it gets.

Now a ploughman's.
That's a bit less basic.

The Club Sandwich is pretty fancy, I wouldn't call that basic.

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 26/04/2024 23:33

I don't get why you think there should be a contradiction between basic and nice food. Yes a cheese and pickle sandwich is 'basic' but it's still a good sandwich .

Oh.

Don't use TikTok 🤷‍♀️

BobbyBiscuits · 26/04/2024 23:39

I adore a cheese and pickle sarnie. Cheese toastie with pickle on the side. White sliced bread, mature cheddar, branston. Yum!

WildImaginings · 26/04/2024 23:56

Take a bite, take a bite

fromaytobe · 27/04/2024 00:13

Overtheatlantic · 26/04/2024 22:57

Pickle as in gherkin?

Pickle as in Branston.

Rosestulips · 27/04/2024 00:17

I’d call it simple. Basic implies theirs is something wrong with it where that couldn’t be any further than the truth, it’s delicious.

would rather have that than millions of sandwich fillings sliding out all over the place
