Clothing in the gym

I have seen this going around - do you agree with him?

I think I do, I really don't understand the current trend of ridiculously small shorts shoved right into arse cracks and bandeau bras for working out.

I go to the gym 2/3 times a week and feel no need to dress like this.

Or, are they just 'dressing for themselves?'

I go to the gym with my 18 year old. She works out in shorts (not the tiny butt ones) and a sports bra
I wear leggings that stop just under my knee with sports bra and tank top
Why? Because that's the items we both find most comfortable when there

If folks look they look, can't stop that it's human behaviour, I only take issue with those who are staring and commenting to the young girls which thankfully at our gym is very rare and other guys will tell em to knock it off

We did have one young lady who wore what looked like my old school gym knickers and a tiny boob tube bra, never once saw her work out just wander round, that's her prerogative. She didn't get any comments and stopped coming

If a dude can't control his behaviour round women trying to work out then that's a him problem and he might want to look at why he has no self control

Sorry, but bare skin means you sweat all over the equipment. Yuk!

If I'm working hard enough I'll sweat on the equipment (and the mat, and the floor) regardless of what I'm wearing.

That's why we wipe the equipment down after we're finished with it, and I've never known a gym that doesn't ask people to do this. As for 'Yuk!' are you five?

Exactly!

I'm well covered but my butt leaves sweat on the bike seat
Just needs some cleaning spray and wipe down with the paper towel and good as new, takes seconds to do if the other posters so grossed out she can reclean it to her liking

Sapiens · 26/04/2024 09:42

So men aren't allowed to find women attractive? And not even look?

Seems weird given that's pretty much entirely why we're all here

Hear, hear.

Years ago a wise old bird told me "if you don't want the goods to be looked at, don't put them in the shop window".

Not that the OP should change her gym attire but I can relate to what the guy was trying to say. I'm sure it cuts both ways.

Milliemoo6 · 27/04/2024 21:20

This it utterly ridiculous. Woman wearing shorts and a sports bra in the gym is not pornographic. Women have been wearing clothes like this in sport for decades.

SocksAndTheCity · 27/04/2024 21:30

Nobody has said that people won't look at other people. What a lot of posters are saying is that women are not responsible for (or interested in) men being gross and inappropriate about their workout clothes.

If the woman below was in my gym I would look at her because she looks awesome, and I'd be interested in what sets she was doing and with which weights, as well as envying her crop top (which I'd never be able to wear having G cup boobs).

I would not be whining about how very dare she look awesome in the gym because I don't like being reminded I can't control my unpleasant perving, and that's all her fault.

And scunch bum leggings aren't anal porn clothing

what’s the point of them if not to look sexy?

ehb102 · 27/04/2024 21:58

Being a fat gym rat I have seen too many women be criticised and hassled for the crime of being female in public. If you meet their beauty standards, men leer. If you don't, they sneer. The one thing they don't do when they make these sorts of comments is mind their own business and understand that the world does not revolve around them.

You should be wiping down your equipment after you use it anyway. Moot point.

I'm so sick of man panderers whinging about how men are somehow hard done by and "not allowed to find women attractive" or whatever the fuck they're saying to moralise about women's clothing more than men's behaviour. If you truly think we live in a society where men's sexuality is repressed, where they are being denied outlets and oppressed for sexual thoughtcrime, you're absolutely lost to reason. They're not. They have more material and outlets to satisfy them than they could get through in ten lifetimes. There's no shortage. They're not sexually repressed. They're not victims when women wear sexy clothes. They're OK in this regard. You can stop worrying.

Years ago a wise old bird told me "if you don't want the goods to be looked at, don't put them in the shop window".

This is really revolting and anything but wise, but it's pointless explaining why to someone to whom it isn't self-evident. Let's just say: in today's episode of "what object are women", we are...literally merchandise!

I don't have any weird anal porn issues Hmm

These are the leggings I mean - you'd have to be living on Mars to not know what I mean

You definitely do 😂

I pole dance and lots of women wear scrunch butt shorts which can be tiny and can be in all sorts of positions and I've never once in my life looked at them and thought OMG anal porn 😂😂

No need to abuse me.

Toenailz · 28/04/2024 00:33

There is a world of difference between wearing a crop top and a pair of shorts, and wearing those scrunch bum shorts so far up your backside that you can see what the person ate for breakfast. Which is what this guy is on about.

Women can (and do) wear what they want. Some wear whats comfortable. Some do choose certain clothes to look sexy and outline everything including pretty much the bumhole - let's not pretend here. They desperately want people to look.

Find it rather desperate, myself, but hey ho. People can wear what they want.

That being said, complete disagree with the guy in that he's there to work out, it's not hard to just not ogle people, especially when you should be more distracted with your own work out. He's no right to blame women for his perving.

But yes, some clothing just IS designed to accentuate and some is designed to be sexual. If people choose to wear that, they're doing so people look. We're not talking about normal fitting clothes here revealing a mid drift or whatever. We're talking the scrunch bum shorts which ironically, are designed to enhance the appearance of your backside.

Honestly get fed up of fellow women talking as if some women don't do this for attention. Some just DO!

Some women are literally merchandising themselves, though. It's precisely the point of it.

& if they want to, then crack on. But we can't pretend this isn't the case, just so what? - women never appear to want to be ogled at? It's just not the reality. Some do. And it's painfully obvious. Its up to them, if they do. But let's not pretend it doesn't exist.

If you can see through the shorts you should speak to MI5 about being a spy.

Are you a man?

Oh, that came quicker than expected.

Can confirm I own a vulva (and was born female, before the transphobia posts start). Do you? Find that a very intrusive question to have to answer whether I own a vulva or not to be honest.

I imagine so. Men don't typically accuse men of being the opposite gender just because they have a different viewpoint.

MInd you, neither do women. It's just mumsnet people that do.

It’s not because of your views, it’s your choice of words, like ‘mid drift’, which I never hear women use.

The shorts are designed so barely anything is left to the imagination - it's literally the point of them. Hardly need to work for M15 to a) understand this, or b) be able to observe everything from a pair of shorts designed to show, well, everything.

They outline the arse cheeks sure, but pretending you can see their bum hole is frankly bizarre.

You're quite right, it's 'midriff'. I didn't even use the term correctly. So I'm not surprised you've not heard it before.

So, are you a man? Since you like to know about other peoples genitalia so much?

No, I know what you meant by ‘mid drift’, as I said, it’s not a term I often hear women use, even when spelt correctly.

I’m not a man, and I think your preoccupation with women’s bum holes, to the extent of thinking you can see what the person ate for breakfast, is bizarre.

I think it's far more bizarre to ask about which genitalia people own, online, to be honest. It's really intrusive, but then this is normalised on mumsnet for some reason.

Whenever different viewpoints are aired on a discussion, the person in the minority gets accused of being male. Bit predictable at this point.

A fixation on women’s bodies and what they wear is likely to get questioned on a site mainly used by women.

I find people attractive. I don’t post about it on Reddit blaming them for making me look at them and it being very wrong of them to be so attractive because I’m married.

Edited

Exactly. It's coming up to cycling season. My town's on a popular route so, soon, our cafes will be adorned by clusters of wiry men in those shorts. I mean, I notice. You couldn't not! But it'd be extremely rude to stare at their - erm, physiology, and downright creepy of me. So I don't stare.
