Clothing in the gym

I have seen this going around - do you agree with him?

I think I do, I really don't understand the current trend of ridiculously small shorts shoved right into arse cracks and bandeau bras for working out.

I go to the gym 2/3 times a week and feel no need to dress like this.

Or, are they just 'dressing for themselves?'

We'll leave aside the fact that various posters are scouring the net for the silliest examples of gym wear they can find (and only because they hate seeing it so much, of course), because it doesn't actually change the issue.

It's a bum. If you think the way it is dressed is against the gym rules, report it. Otherwise, having noticed the bum, and disapproved of the bum, and silently judged the owner of the bum as morally deficient because you can't deal with your own feelings and thoughts about the bum, go back to your sets and look elsewhere. Nobody cares what you think as long as you behave yourself - although if you share your thoughts about trying to dictate what women wear because they're responsible for your reaction, expect a suitable response.

I mean it doesn’t offend me, make me think of a porn star, make me think about cheating on my partner or spark any of those thoughts in the first post.

But the key thing with this image is the woman is a body builder creating content to show off gains to specific body parts. At the start of the video you actually see her take off a covering for the reel.

Josette77 · 27/04/2024 08:03

That woman is ripped!!!
Her outfit doesn't offend me at all. Honestly she looks amazing. So strong. 🔥

Love you’ve picked a photo of a body builder posing to “prove” your point 😂. And to answer your question yes it is very very cool. She looks incredible- super strong

@Kinshipug

And why shouldn't they look at the wall? I don't watch other people when I'm at the gym? Do they need to be able to look at women all the
Have you ever actually gone to a gym? In between sets when resting people look around. Not with any great focus but the sheet they would anywhere else. Who the hell stares at a wall???? 😂

In my experience most people just play with their phones between sets.

I do too. But I also look at people using equipment I'm not familiar with to see how to use them. Check out where I might go next and if there is a bit of a queue or check to see if the person using it is still using it. I look up to see if anything is going on. How busy it is, if anyone I know has arrived etc. basically I behave pretty much as I would in any public space.

Soigneur · 27/04/2024 09:50

@Sapiens women who are actually strong, as opposed to bodybuilders, don’t look anything like that though (or dress like that). The amazing Giulia Imperio snatching twice her own body weight for an example.

Hmm have you actually read the thread? It is full of people saying people shouldn't even notice the bum and should be staring at their phones and not looking up at all, ever
No one is discussing behaviours like approaching women. They are complaining about men literally seeing women. At all. Ever.

Show me one single post where someone has said you can never notice a bum? I await your response eagerly.

I would absolutely hate men working out in this.

Some of the men’s outfits are as revealing as the women’s and it’s disgusting.

I don’t want to see vulva or testicles when someone bends over in front of me.

But most of all I absolutely hate that these young girls/women feel they need to wear such revealing clothes in order to get men to appreciate their bodies.

If you have a nice body you can see it in normal gym wear, so why they need to try and look naked.

You don’t need to degrade yourself simply for the attention of men.

Whaleway · 27/04/2024 10:11

@toomanyy bodybuilders wear those pants in bodybuilding competitions and environments. Everyone there knows the drill, it's part of the culture there. And presumably it's too show all the muscles including the glutes.

That's not really the same as wearing pants or knickers in a gym open to the public. The very specific picture op posted of someone wearing underwear to workout in a gym is simply not appropriate.

Just like how you wouldn't turn up to a public pool in a Mankini. Not the place a need a bit attention seeking.

Pootle40 · 27/04/2024 10:14

To be fair I've noticed lots of younger women appearing at the gym as if it's a catwalk rather than the gym. Not breaking sweat, face full of make up, hair perfect, and yes wearing fashion rather than work out clothes. Odd

Yes but you clearly haven't, so I'm giving the rest of the post the attention it deserves.

I don't go to gyms but is it common to see women dressed like in the 3 pics posted together earlier?

OneTC · 27/04/2024 12:44

Of course not. I've never seen anyone whose bum wasn't fully covered, although I'm sure it happens somewhere. I occasionally see bum scrunch leggings or shorts (I think they're on the way out though) or a neon cycling shorts/hotpants and crop top combination. They're probably the least common items of apparel. Was there this morning, pretty full, none of that stuff to be seen.

Obviously if you start searching for it online and among fitness influencers then you'll find it. It's manufactured outrage. Any bloke who complains that it's distracting is sufficiently sexual that he'll be looking for naked women online when it suits him, so he's clearly not offended by it; he just doesn't like it when women do it on their own terms.

xSideshowAuntSallyx · 27/04/2024 14:34

I've just been to the gym. I didn't see any really short shorts (I did see some interesting ways of doing certain machines I 😬) in fact I didn't see many women there at all maybe that was why.

I did look around between sets which apparently I shouldn't be doing, according to this thread I should be glued to my phone and never make eye contact or look at anyone (sadly the guy I fancy wasn't there so I couldn't match his gaze today, I don't think he's got the Mumsnet memo either 🤷‍♀️).

Yeah I thought this was probably the case. I go to climbing gyms and you do see people in spray on leggings and small sports bras, but it's actually a pretty practical choice but I've never seen anything like them.

I don't personally like to show my body because some people comment on it and I don't like feeling self conscious, so I don't. Other people can do what they want.

The portrayal of blokes on here (and by the original comment) being basically hardwired to obsess over semi clothed women to the point it disrupts their day is alien to me. I accept that there are blokes like that but they're choosing to behave like that, or think that's a right way to behave, or kidding themselves that this lack of self control is normal

SocksAndTheCity · 27/04/2024 15:04

How would you know some women 'feel the need' to wear X, Y or Z, @Trulyme - could it not be possible that they feel good and comfortable in their choice of clothing and like wearing it?

Or does it only apply to clothing you disapprove of and wouldn't wear yourself, so no other woman could ever choose to wear it of her own volition and therefore must be doing it for the benefit of others?

notprincehamlet · 27/04/2024 15:46

bandeau bras for working out
I'd worry about trapping a nipple in a weight stack

SpiritOfEcstasy · 27/04/2024 19:11

What a strange perspective he has. Avert your gaze lech is what goes through my mind! Whatever a woman chooses to wear to the gym she’s there to exercise.

WatermelonWaveclub · 27/04/2024 19:16

When I'm at the gym I just concentrate on my workout, I don't really pay much attention to anyone else. How does he cope in the pool with women wearing bikinis?
