Who were as beautiful or if not more beautiful? Why was she considered the most beautiful of them all?

Aishwariya Rai was stunning in her youth, but it’s a similar beauty to Sophia Loren the same Features

I find it so weird that Diana is always included in these lists, she was very ordinary looking imo (obvs had the money for nice clothes but apart from that?)

she was a beautiful person on the inside and that made her very attractive. She was a beautiful person

Nah. Marilyn was stunning. And iconic. She's been dead for what, 60-ish years now, and she's still iconic, everyone everywhere knows who she is, instantly recognizable.

What I truly don't understand is Diana. She's not beautiful. At all. Tall and great figure, but her face is absolutely ordinary, put her head on some average unremarkable figure and no one would give her a second glance when out and about. Both Kate and Meghan are better looking than her.

Ah see I'd say Diana was way prettier than both Kate and meghan.
Although I have to say I find Kate actually quite plain looking. I think meghan is really pretty.

Booooooo.

Hoooooray.

Literally no point to discussions of beauty. It is completely subjective.

Who says she was? Is this a poll result taken by everyone alive and she came out #1?

By the standards of her time, 1950s, she was probably the first very sexy actress who projected her sexuality. There was other actress who were beautiful but in a more subdued way.

AnSionnachGlic · 25/04/2024 21:05

As some of you say beauty is subjective. Some people are 'classically' good looking with symmetrical features etc ..but some people do have that extra something that sparks off the camera, and I do agree Marilyn had that.

SeanBeansMealDeal · 25/04/2024 21:06

'Most beautiful' is sometimes a sexist shorthand for people who want to say that they admire a woman or her stardom/presence; and because 'most beautiful' is seen as the pinnacle of what a woman can aspire to, that's the descriptor that's used. Even for somebody like Rachel Riley - who is undoubtedly very physically attractive - her beauty tends to be the go-to descriptor rather than her remarkable intelligence or highly-recognised campaigning work.

Even for woman like Diana, who may (or may not, depending on your pov) have coped admirably with her fame and position and used it for a lot of good - but going by common objective standards of beauty, she was naturally quite average, albeit very well-dressed and immaculately presented.

I agree that it's 'interesting' how the 'most beautiful woman in the world' invariably tends to be white. In fact, when you consider the overwhelming proportion of women in the world who are NOT in any way famous, the overwhelming likelihood is that the actual MBWITW - if this can be categorically assigned - is going to be somebody, like most women, whom nobody really knows except her family, friends and colleagues.

Mothership4two · 25/04/2024 15:25

Was she considered the most beautiful? She was known for being sexy and acting a bit dippy and faux naive. She was also a pretty mediocre actor IMO.

Off the top of my head, from the same era, I would say Grace Kelly and Audrey Hepburn were stunningly beautiful (much more so than MM). Beauty is in the eye of the beholder though isn't it?

It is, as I think Audrey hepburn was very plain.

Yes Fateha is pretty @Blackcats7. I think one of the Asian sisters in Gogglebox has a naturally beautiful face.

Agree totally! I say it every time they come on.

CranfordScones · 25/04/2024 21:11

It's much more interesting to examine the hold she had over very powerful men. And what she found in her marriage to Arthur Miller.

Some eminent philosophers have written that it isn't entirely subjective at least, that there are standards of beauty. It seems you can sort of point to it.

Alalalalalongalalalalalonglonglilong · 25/04/2024 21:16

I don't think MM is much to look at. She just looked slutty at a time when most women didn't. These days we call it old school glamour. If she lived today with all these love island types prancing around almost naked no one would even notice her.

Devonisheaven · 25/04/2024 21:16

I could never understand the fuss over Elizabeth Taylor, a pretty child but that’s about it for me.

Josette77 · 25/04/2024 21:21

She had sex appeal and vulnerability.
You can be gorgeous and not sexy, and you can be unattractive and sexy.

Marilyn was very very pretty and incredibly sexy.
Sex appeal is one of those things you have or don't.

Angelina Jolie is gorgeous but she's also sexy. Even if someone doesn't find her attractive she still is very sexy. Even speaking at UN events she's sexy.

I think Kate and Meghan are both VERY beautiful. I wouldn't say either of them are very sexy though. I mean I'm sure they are with their husbands but they don't exude sex appeal.

Halle Berry falls into gorgeous and sexy as well. She was always sexy.

Marilyn was also the first women to found her own production company! She was a force despite her vulnerability.

Willyoubuymeahouseofgold · 25/04/2024 21:23

If you want to "measure" the beauty , it's Bella Hadid . She has the highest score in the Golden Ratio on most lists.

MsLuxLisbon · 25/04/2024 21:29

Noshowlomo · 25/04/2024 15:31

She was so beautiful and had mega star quality but I think the most beautiful woman that ever existed is Gisele, around 2005. I was (and still am) obsessed

It really does show that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Giselle's ok but nowhere near most beautiful IMO. I also think that Marylin was seen more as a sex symbol than as a beauty.

CroftonWillow · 25/04/2024 21:29

Isn't being 'sexy' just being suggestive (whilst also being quite good looking)?

Screamingabdabz · 25/04/2024 21:31

As a pp said - I think if you’d seen her in real life you’d know what people were going on about.
That photo isn’t a flattering one but some people have an amazing aura in RL. Lots of people publicly said that about MM. And Diana actually.

My dd is one of the beautiful people (doesn’t get it from me, I’m ugly) literally stops traffic and people stare at her wherever she is, but if I were to show you a photo you’d think she was just another pretty girl. She has something that comes across in person and people (men women and children) are drawn to her.

MsLuxLisbon · 25/04/2024 21:31

Hont1986 · 25/04/2024 16:07

Even at the time she wasn't considered the 'most beautiful', she was a sex symbol. Nowadays it would be someone like Sydney Sweeney.

Great example. I don't find Sydney beautiful at all, in fact she is barely even pretty IMO, but she is definitely considered a big sex symbol.

IvorTheEngineDriver · 25/04/2024 18:53

No, she was an amazingly gifted film actress - especially in comedy. Even Laurence Olivier said so when he worked with her. The camera just loved her.

She was a great comedic actress - every time I watch Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, I’m newly impressed. The line that makes me howl every time is when she tells her character’s future father-in-law, “I’m not marrying him for his money, I’m marrying him for your money.” 😂

That's absolute nonsense. That just shows that these lists are a crock of crap, nobody I know considers Bella Hadid even marginally attractive.

I thought Lauren Bacall was beautiful

Yes totally underrated and not taken seriously - even on this thread - waved away and dismissed as a sexy pointless fluff thing and not a talented complex human being.

I couldn't agree less. She is a nepo baby who would be nowhere without her connections. Her sister is marginally better but not very much.
