Who were as beautiful or if not more beautiful? Why was she considered the most beautiful of them all?

Femininity is a word that has lost its base function and meaning these days, but Marilyn embodied femininity in a very visceral sense, and I think this is part of what evokes such a powerful response to her

Edited

This fascinates me- how did she do it?:
“I’ll never forget the day Marilyn and I were walking around New York City, just having a stroll on a nice day. She loved New York because no one bothered her there like they did in Hollywood, she could put on her plain-Jane clothes and no one would notice her. She loved that. So, as we we’re walking down Broadway, she turns to me and says, ‘Do you want to see me become her?’ I didn’t know what she meant but I just said ‘Yes’ — and then I saw it. I don’t know how to explain what she did because it was so very subtle, but she turned something on within herself that was almost like magic. And suddenly cars were slowing, and people were turning their heads and stopping to stare. They were recognizing that this was Marilyn Monroe as if she pulled off a mask or something, even though a second ago nobody noticed her. I had never seen anything like it before.”~ Amy Greene, wife of Marilyn’s personal photographer Milton Greene

Even at the time she wasn't considered the 'most beautiful', she was a sex symbol. Nowadays it would be someone like Sydney Sweeney.

You do realise that ‘beautiful’ is subjective? Nobody has conducted a trial that has resulted in incontrovertible evidence that MM is the most beautiful woman who ever existed?

Also non-Western views of beauty may differ.

Don’t worry about this too much!

I think everyone is already aware of this tbf

vincettenoir · 25/04/2024 17:48

@newyorkhotel that’s fascinating. I guess that means that there was an element of performance to it.

LizTruss · 25/04/2024 17:56

Hmm. I thought it was me. 🤔

Absolutely- she apparently spent hours studying herself in a mirror and practicing her facial expressions etc

TheMuskratOfDestiny · 25/04/2024 18:10

Of course she did she was an actress.

Apart from the OP it seems!

Watch her in movies, it’s not just appearance, it’s presence and personality radiating from her

Naomi Campbell Beauty GIF

She was sexy in a time when it was bold and daring to be sexy. She was a change maker and a powerful image. But also very very vulnerable and abused horrifically. She was a lot of things and to some she was the most beautiful but I think a 25 yo Naomi Campbell was the greatest of all time. That face!

FuckoffeeBeforeCoffee · 25/04/2024 18:22

Hedy Lamarr or Rachel Weisz for me.

I think she has a lovely smile and a kind of fresh-faced beauty when she was young. But if she hadn't been the presumed future queen of England I doubt she would have stood out from a crowd of other women. Like I said, limelight is at least half the equation!

Interestingly, she was the first woman I ever heard my mother describe as beautiful though.

Her eyes though.

ApricotsAndPlums · 25/04/2024 18:42

Beauty (good skin, even features, good bone structure, etc) isn’t always accompanied by charisma, which IMO is the thing that makes someone really attractive. The old Hollywood beauties had both, which is vanishingly rare.

No, she was an amazingly gifted film actress - especially in comedy. Even Laurence Olivier said so when he worked with her. The camera just loved her.

toomanyy · 25/04/2024 18:55

It’s really odd how people state categorically that ‘x’ white woman is the most beautiful woman in the world, without any reference to cultural norms.

IvorTheEngineDriver · 25/04/2024 18:55

Oh and the most beautiful woman in the world is Sophia Loren.

HoneyButterPopcorn · 25/04/2024 19:02

I guess because she died young keeps the aura going. Same with Jayne Mansfield, Jean Harlow, James Dean (let’s not forget the chaps)…

She has a persona that was promoted like hell and the studios knew that they’d make mega bucks from this ‘ditzy, cutesy blonde’. Can’t say I was a fan but I get the impression she didn’t believe her own hype.

Isabella Rossellini was incredibly beautiful when she was young (she still looks lovely), Sophia Loren, Brigitte Bardot - ones who made it to older age don’t quite have the ‘mystique’ of those who died young.

Heddy Lamar - not only beautiful but very smart too - committed the ‘crime’ of aging, and then became a laughing stock (and more famously know for) having multiple plastic surgery which was botched.

ViaMargutta · 25/04/2024 19:02

Nah. Marilyn was stunning. And iconic. She's been dead for what, 60-ish years now, and she's still iconic, everyone everywhere knows who she is, instantly recognizable.

What I truly don't understand is Diana. She's not beautiful. At all. Tall and great figure, but her face is absolutely ordinary, put her head on some average unremarkable figure and no one would give her a second glance when out and about. Both Kate and Meghan are better looking than her.

neilyoungismyhero · 25/04/2024 19:17

Vivien Leigh for me

Remoteaccess · 25/04/2024 19:20

coxesorangepippin · 25/04/2024 15:55

I really don't get the fuss

She wasn't that beautiful

I agree!

BlackCat007 · 25/04/2024 19:29

Princess Diana was just well styled.

Enko · 25/04/2024 19:36

If you Google "most beautiful woman in the world " you get told its Bella Hadid

bfsham · 25/04/2024 20:35

Princess Diana in person was stunning aesthetically; her photos didn't capture the reality.

RecruitmentGuru · 25/04/2024 20:39

As a PP said maybe it’s the ‘it’ then it’s like when you talk to someone I guess you don’t initially find attractive but you get to know them and you’re like wow! Although MM would not have to work so hard.
