This must be the worst spring weather ever encountered.

My Mum uploads her photos onto her PC and gets On This Day and all photos taken on that day in previous years.

I say about 70-80% of photos taken on this day within the past fortnight we are wearing t-shirts and once, shorts.

Think there has been one day where I wore a t-shirt outside.

The only difference between April and February is that it’s daylight when I drive to work for a 7am start

Porcuine20 · 24/04/2024 16:00

I feel like warm, sunny days really recharge my battery - but the few we’ve had since last July I’ve mostly missed as I’ve been at work, and the kids at school. Last year’s holidays were mostly grim weather-wise - a freezing cold camping holiday in Suffolk over May half term, a summer week in Pembrokeshire where the weather was mainly windy and showery, and then a camping holiday in the Lake District that was unbelievably wet and muddy - cooking the sausages on a stove for dinner in the pouring rain in full waterproofs because the barbecue got put out by a sudden deluge. February half term I had two days walking in wales, got through 3 sets of waterproofs and had to stick to low ground due to the awful weather. Don’t get me wrong, we made the most of being away and carried on regardless, but just one relaxed, warm, sunny holiday would have worked wonders for my mental health. My kids have had enough of being dragged out on cold wet walks and have spent too much time on screens, and I’m sick of feeling cold. I don’t mind bad weather when there’s good weather to balance it out, it’s just felt relentless since last summer.

fieldsofbutterflies · 24/04/2024 16:02

April is always all over the place - the lockdown weather we had really wasn't the norm.

I work outside and last week I think I got caught in hailstorms most days - I was wearing full waterproofs and I was still cold - this week I've been in a t-shirt and have even managed to catch the sun on my face as I didn't realise how bright it was going to be.

Looking back on my business memories and it's generally always been like this.

You can all blame me. We had a sunny spell in the midlands several weeks ago so I decided to vacuum pack all the big winter coats and put them in storage…

Thank you! I’m so sick of hearing myself effing and blinding about the weather I can now use your username. And have a smile!

EatCrow · 24/04/2024 16:05

Picklewicklepickle · 24/04/2024 14:27

Yes it’s absolutely miserable, I can’t work out if it’s got worse or my tolerance has decreased as I’ve got older.

I know April is hit and miss (it’s my birthday month and I recall birthdays with snow as well as birthday barbecues!) but this takes the piss.

I’ve wondered the same regarding tolerance. I think it’s down to the fact that we barely had a summer last year so the winter has seemed never ending. We need months of warm weather to put us back on an even keel. We need vitamin D naturally.

The phrase 'n'er cast a clout til May be out' (modern day translation - don't plant out any tender plants too early or risk the frost!) suggests we've often had chillier weather at this time of year.

But the long, wet, dull weather since July last year (apart from a week or so in September) has been very trying. Roll on some warmth!

Yes, I believe it also means - don´t throw away your warm clothing (olde English Clout=cloths/vests) until we get past May. I never knew it related to tender plants too, but it makes sense!

Verv · 24/04/2024 16:08

Im very much a winter person. Love the cold, love the dark, but even I'm getting bored of being cold now.
I live in the north and the wind is biting still.
I want some warmth in the air so I can get back to the beach with the dog rather than going to the woods for some protection against the wind.

(and before anybody starts I pick up poo religiously and I walk on the beach first thing in the morning when its empty bar me and the gulls)

Gingerbee · 24/04/2024 16:08

It must be chilly my hubby has turned up the thermostat!

D3LAN3Y · 24/04/2024 16:10

I'm sick of the doom and gloomy weather too. It's been wet and windy here and even when it brightens up it's chilly. I'm so fed up. I need sunshine to perk up my mental health. I'm sick of coming back soggy on the school run to then get warmed up to go back out in the rain for pick up. 😫

peakygold · 24/04/2024 16:32

I mowed the grass in the sunshine today and got the washing dry on the line. It helps if you are up and about early because the sun seems to disappear behind clouds by lunchtime.

Lovesgotme · 24/04/2024 17:36

It's called "global warming".

TheChosenTwo · 24/04/2024 17:41

It is cold. Dh and I went out for lunch today and I had my proper winter coat on!
Heating has been on all the time, I hate being cold at home.
We had to get another log delivery too as it’s still cold enough for fires in the evenings.
I wouldn’t be so cross about it if not for the fact that we barely see the sun at all. It’s just gloomy. I live in the SE, we had an Easter break to Bristol to see dd at uni, I pissed it down the entire time. We did still manage to get out and have loads of fun but constantly changing in and out of sets of clothing was tedious.

maddiemookins16mum · 24/04/2024 17:44

I had washing out today, bone dry in 2 hours. However, getting it in my hands were like ice, I could barely unpeg it.
It’s sooooo cold.

EmmaEmerald · 24/04/2024 18:02

The weather forecast isn't giving a correct temp. It's very rare for me to be in a winter coat, hat etc in April. In fact, I can't recall it happening and I'm obsessed with weather so the last time must have been at least 20 years ago.

I'm closing curtains early because the daylight lamp copes better with closed curtains than all the gloomy grey.

@Verv I was wondering what winter people thought about it.

EmmaEmerald · 24/04/2024 19:02

@peakygold I find if we get a sliver of sunshine it's usually around the time I've given up for the day. Very typical of the odd sunny day in winter. You get home, eat dinner and think "why is the sun coming out now, for all of ten minutes before it sets"

@BillieTheFish Thank you for starting the thread, I really needed to rant.

rainbowduplo · 24/04/2024 19:18

I'm an all weather person. I grew up somewhere that rains a lot, I work outside, my kids and I consider ourselves weatherproof. We're the type to say 'no such thing as bad weather, just bad clothing', we head to the beach in the rain, we go out daily regardless of what it's doing. Essentially it takes a lot to beat me.

But this winter has beaten me. It's the constantly drying wet weather gear, and drying out wellies, and getting small bodies warm again after being out. We've started staying in more and more because we're just exhausted by it, we're sick of layering up and putting on waterproofs. It's felt relentless. So yea, I feel you OP. Enoughs enough now.

Have felt very grateful for some sunnier and warmer afternoons in the last week.

EmmaEmerald · 24/04/2024 19:22

@rainbowduplo "We're the type to say 'no such thing as bad weather, just bad clothing',"

I hate that phrase with every cell! Please tell me you won't keep using it 😂

enough was enough more than a month ago. I moved this time last year and remembering going for long walks daily when I got here.

Haha that's why I mentioned it, I know it's the worst. 😂 I can only apologise. Let me reassure you we only use it in our own little unit and usually when we're out and slightly regretting our life choices.

😁 But it's just not true. Even if I kitted myself out with a grand's worth of clobber from go-outdoors, I'm still getting a wet face and breathing in cold wet air, my nose will still be running and I can't keep a decent conversation with my hood up and the wind whistling around me.

rainbowduplo · 24/04/2024 19:44

@Desecratedcoconut fair point. It is seriously annoying to try and converse in a hood. I prefer a hat, but they're not so waterproof as a rule. However usually my body is warm, and I feel alive for having been out doing something rather than sat at home. Just how I feel about it of course, you do you!

If you asked my DS to tell you about the two best days of his life he'll tell you about going to a local animal park in the pouring rain and playing crazy golf in about 5cm of water, and the day we went to the beach when it rained so hard that even my seasalt 'tested in horizontal Cornish rain' coat failed me. My face was cold, my nose was running, we weren't really chatting, but we had tonnes of fun! When we got back to the car I had to strip all the soggy clothes off DS so he was travelling home in his pants, wrapped in a massive blanket. But we had hot chocolate in the car. He thinks this was a very grand adventure, and I look back on it so fondly.

Usually that's the kind of people we are. But the last two months I've just wanted to stay in with the fire on. Not that we have a fire, sad times, but if we did it would be on! Doesn't feel like there's been the usual peppering of nice days in the last 4 months. It's either been wet, cold, or both.

ALongHardWinter · 24/04/2024 19:54

Same here. Think I must be getting feeble in my old age (just turned 60) because I'm assured by friends and family that it really is not any colder than usual for this time of year. But I'm still having to put my heating on in the evening and I'm still wearing my winter coat and jumpers.

Ilovetea33 · 24/04/2024 20:01

I went to Normandy last week and took the wrong coat, I almost froze to death.

usernother · 24/04/2024 20:08

I remember heavy snow during April in the 80's and lots of people being sent home from work early. April is always very mixed.

EmmaEmerald · 24/04/2024 21:17

not only have I had to put the heating on, I've had to put the temp up on it.

the building has accumulated damp so it's harder to get warm than it was in the cold wave in January.
