This must be the worst spring weather ever encountered.

I'm in London and I just had the heating on for last 2 hours as I was cold, dogs were cold

Fucking miserable

Picklewicklepickle · 24/04/2024 14:27

Yes it’s absolutely miserable, I can’t work out if it’s got worse or my tolerance has decreased as I’ve got older.

I know April is hit and miss (it’s my birthday month and I recall birthdays with snow as well as birthday barbecues!) but this takes the piss.

WannabeHealthier · 24/04/2024 14:32

I’m feckin freezing. This weather is really getting me down!

YeahComeOnThen · 24/04/2024 14:37

BillieTheFish · 24/04/2024 13:28

Yes but it has also pissed it down most days, and as I am out most of the day, I can't trust the weather. So I have things drying inside and am fed up of it.

@BillieTheFish

fair enough

LauderSyme · 24/04/2024 14:38

Yep still having to regularly put the heating on.

I think we all know Britain is famous for it's temperate climate but we've literally not had more than 2 days in a row of dry, mild weather for months.

There was definitely one year recently when I got slightly sunburned in early April.

Well, I tried having a whinge to God about maybe turning the temperature up a couple of degrees, but clearly HE wasn't listening.

Annoying isnt it!

Ours normally go in to 24/7 summer grazing 1st April, this year i didnt move them all until Saturday just gone. Late for us! But the summer fields are dry here now as the horrible cold wind made sure of that

I got caught short with haylage last year so in January I bought enough to see me through until late May. Glad I did.

Twilight7777 · 24/04/2024 14:45

YANBU. Sick of the cold, sick of the damn rain!

The phrase 'n'er cast a clout til May be out' (modern day translation - don't plant out any tender plants too early or risk the frost!) suggests we've often had chillier weather at this time of year.

But the long, wet, dull weather since July last year (apart from a week or so in September) has been very trying. Roll on some warmth!

That phrase refers to May blossom (hawthorn). My hawthorn is in bud so will hopefully flower right on time this year. It's usually about right, by the time the hawthorn flowers the weather is generally warm enough for a light jumper or t shirt.

VikingLady · 24/04/2024 14:50

I have chilblains. In April.

Knitgoodwoman · 24/04/2024 14:51

Is it colder and wetter than normal (statistically speaking, it was 5 degrees the other day which for April is low). With windchill it felt more like 2!
it is getting me down as well Op, I hear you.

VikingLady · 24/04/2024 14:51

It snowed up in Newcastle in April back in either 2000 or 2001, but I don't think the weather was as consistently poor.

My kids won't wear protective gear so they're only allowed bikes and scooters in dry weather, and we've managed a single bike ride so far this year.

singingthypraises · 24/04/2024 14:52

Sunny blue skies where I am, I don't have a jacket with me at all today. T-shirt and skirt weather Smile Just depends where you are. 12°C here so far from cold. I'm sure it'll be back to snow before we know it of course.

Jimmyneutronsforehead · 24/04/2024 14:53

My late next door neighbour was a lovely elderly chap who used to share gardening tips with me, and he said never plant tender plants out until after the 10th of may.

He said that even though the weather changes, he's consistently noticed that on or after the 10th of may the weather is just nicer and more reliable and that's from decades of experience.

I know this winter has been the wettest on record for a while but I don't think it being cold this time of year is a new thing.

I am itching for warmer times though, the garden looks dull, and I just want time to go and enjoy the outdoors without getting slapped in the face with water.

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 24/04/2024 14:53

I think it's the consistent awfulness that's getting everyone down. Usually by now we've had at least a few scattered days when the temperature has been high enough for barbecues to break out, and we've been able to go around in a T shirt. Up here, if the sun has been out, then the windchill has reduced the temperature to something silly, and if the sun's not out then it's raining (and we've still had the wind). So there's been no relief from it.

Til May be out is actually about may blossom, which is hawthorn. It can be as early as late March some years, but shitty years like this means it matches up with the month it's named for.

Porridgeislife · 24/04/2024 15:08

Statistically the weather is wetter than other years so no one is imagining it, but winter was actually slightly warmer than usual.

Farmers have been struggling to get their crops planted; in Ireland they are predicting a major potato shortage as only a tiny fraction of farmers been able to get their seeds into the soil as it’s so water logged. Same for many UK crops.

Part of the issue is a strong El Niño weather pattern but of course climate change also has to be considered.

FacingTheWall · 24/04/2024 15:11

It was my birthday yesterday. It’s not unusual for it to snow on my birthday, so I’m not so sure this cold is out of the ordinary. It’s still miserable though.

DriveMeCrazy1974 · 24/04/2024 15:23

It's often like this in April. I know because my birthday is the end of April and I can remember more huge showers and storms on that day than not! The year of lockdown it was spectacularly rainy and we got soaked going to pick up an order from a supermarket that they then missed half off so we had to go back (I was not impressed) and they expected us to wait in the rain to do so.
Nearly every other year it has been horrible on my birthday and then just a week or so later, we're often moaning that it's too hot!

EmmaEmerald · 24/04/2024 15:28

I nearly started this thread yesterday OP.
It's absolutely driving me nuts.

Cold and grey = no brainpower for me.

Spring is my favourite but we're not going to have one are we. I'd be grateful for double digit temps, no wind a d a sliver of sun.

It’s out around here but I’m buggered if I’m swopping my wardrobe to summer clothes!
it’s 4° here but at least it’s dry and the washing is drying on the line 😊, and I didn’t need my wellies for this morning’s dog walk! A first for this year 👏

DogsBehavingWrongly · 24/04/2024 15:35

Im just sick of the constant rain, it’s literally every day! Got caught in hailstone earlier

Soonenough · 24/04/2024 15:37

Last weekend was nice and I noticed people buying summer clothes, BBQs . By Sunday night however the chilli had set in and jumpers back on. I noticed the weather most days as the DCs I take care of are cracking up being curtailed. Too wet and cold for playground , no playing in garden as all mud . And constant rain. They have resorted to enacting gladiatorial games with myself as a constant referee.

Yellowbananasarebetterthangreen · 24/04/2024 15:41

Where do you live op? Im in the midlands and we've had several successful washing drying weather days so far. And several more that Ive missed out on. Today for example would have been a good choice.

Umbongowasyuk · 24/04/2024 15:51

Global warming!
