This must be the worst spring weather ever encountered.

I hear you, we're sheep farmers and this has been hands down the most miserable lambing/spring I ever remember. We've had worse as in snow/hail etc but for a day/few days this has been weeks and weeks of cold and wet. Absolutely soul destroying

tobee · 24/04/2024 12:57

Rain, rain, rain, rain, rain, rain, cold, rain, rain, rain, hail, cold, rain, gales, rain, rain, thunder, rain, rain.

Can't remember anything else for ages now. Contemplated turning my heated blanket on last night. Sad

I remember a spring about 18(ish) years ago when it rained and rained and I was still wearing my winter coat in JUNE. One of the lawyers in my office used to ride his motorcycle in every day and he was sick of riding in the pouring rain in wet leathers.

This weather is getting me down too - we get two nice days (not warm, but sunny) and then it's back to rain/hail/sleet and grey clouds.

I've managed to get some washing out on the good days but it takes all day to dry.

That would have been 2007. Dd was born in 2006. She will be 18 this year.

It flooded on her birthday 13th July. We went to France that year. It pissed down there too.

taxguru · 24/04/2024 13:01

It's still only April and it's pretty common to still have frost during April some years.

A couple of weeks ago people were whinging about all the rain.

In a few weeks time, people will be whinging about it being too hot.

There's no such thing as "wrong weather", it's wrong clothing, wrong activities, etc.

If you want somewhere with steady weather, move abroad, if you want hot, move to the Med, if you want cold, move to Canada. But here in the UK, the entire climate has always been very changeable, sometimes hot years, sometimes cold years, sometimes wet years. That's the nature of our climate.

Shopper727 · 24/04/2024 13:04

Been beautiful here the last few days, we are in Scotland and have had some really warm lovely April’s when visiting family down south. But you get used to rain/nasty weather in Scotland. Only thing that annoys me is wearing the wrong footwear or clothing when it gets really warm after cold/rain etc

piscofrisco · 24/04/2024 13:06

Dh and I sat under a duvet on the couch last night til we gave up and went to bed. We have had to put the heating on in the evenings. I felt cold to my bones yesterday. I've got plants ready to plant to plant, and I sowed grass seed on a rare sunny day about 10 days ago. It's just been too cold for anything and I'm fed up.

Andthereyougo · 24/04/2024 13:08

So cold today. I decided to torture myself further by questioning Alexa on today’s temperatures in countries I’ve lived in during the last 25 years, 31C ( a balmy 20 overnight) 27C with 19C overnight. Even Geneva is one degree warmer than here, Southern England.

Comedycook · 24/04/2024 13:17

Had to put my winter coat on to hang out my laundry

TruJay · 24/04/2024 13:21

My mum and I were just discussing how bloody cold we are. Have just apent an hour in the park with my ds and his cousin and we were all wrapped up!

My brother was born at the end of May and mum was saying she remembers it snowing in early June when she went home from hospital! I hope we don’t have a repeat of that!!!! I’m looking forward to some consistently warmer weather

BillieTheFish · 24/04/2024 13:28

YeahComeOnThen · 24/04/2024 12:42

@BillieTheFish

i put washing out most days, it doesn't need to be warm to dry. Even if it's not bone dry, it'll still finish off much more quickly.

some spring warmth would be nice, but as long as I get the occasional sunny day (even if bitingly cold) I'm ok with it.

Yes but it has also pissed it down most days, and as I am out most of the day, I can't trust the weather. So I have things drying inside and am fed up of it.

You can all blame me. We had a sunny spell in the midlands several weeks ago so I decided to vacuum pack all the big winter coats and put them in storage…

You ought to be ashamed of yourself Bouncing Ferret... you're not Amazing at all Wink

Meadowfinch · 24/04/2024 13:34

Yanbu but this isn't rare. It's apple blossom week and if we get a frost this week, it'll kill the crop. Happens about one year in 10.

The rain has been relentless though.

My green house is full of plants waiting to go out, but I'm not moving them until the ground is at least less waterlogged. They'll just rot.

Itsallabouttea · 24/04/2024 13:37

Lincolnshire here, it's bloody freezing. Hung some washing out as today is the only decent day on the forecast, it pissed down anyway. Heating is back on, wearing fingerless gloves wfh. It's miserable!

RedPony1 · 24/04/2024 13:38

countrygirl99 · 24/04/2024 12:34

Where I keep my horse they usually go out 24/7 at the beginning of May. Last year it was 21st because the fields were too wet. It won't be any better this year but at least the fields are beginning to dry out.

Annoying isnt it!

Ours normally go in to 24/7 summer grazing 1st April, this year i didnt move them all until Saturday just gone. Late for us! But the summer fields are dry here now as the horrible cold wind made sure of that

thepastinsidethepresent · 24/04/2024 13:44

YANBU. The toilet seat being cold in the mornings in April is all kinds of wrong. And my jeans being cold when I put them on, as they were this morning.

I'm also fed up of all the wind and rain making going for a walk unpleasant. And not being able to sit out in the garden - although April's changeable we normally get the odd day of sitting-out weather. This year it's yet to come, round here (East Midlands) anyway.

But it's not normally as changeable as it has been this year. I'm in my fifties and I don't think I can remember a more changeable April ever than this has been so far, or one with such a lack of sunny/warm weather.

rainbowduplo · 24/04/2024 13:47

I think the expectation is the issue. When it was this cold in January I just layered up and had done with it, but now I want to be wearing my spring coat and not dealing with winter hat hair. I should just be dealing with the weather I have rather than dressing for the weather I want.

@Wellhellooooodear there’s always one 😉

Mid-June 1997, it was so cold I had to put the heating on - I remember it as my first DS was born then. 2 weeks later it was in the 80s and I didn't know what to put him in (first-time mum at the time)

grapeomelette · 24/04/2024 14:09

It's pretty nice here in Cornwall today. Warm, sunny and spring like.

the80sweregreat · 24/04/2024 14:09

I love a weather whinge fest on mn and usually found on the ' it's too hot ' ones myself as I don't like it too hot.
It's never just nice weather anymore is it ?
I can remember sunny days when it is was just perfect , but that seems to be a thing of the past. Or maybe my tolerance of too hot or cold has changed as I've aged.

I read something recently about not having a village anymore, or a community of people, so seeking the community online. When I was a teenager I had besties I saw everyday at college and work where I'd offload these sort of comments. It's an everyday sort of whinge, which a lot of people would use as a way of connecting with people as it's a shared experience. So people turn to mumsnet where theres almost always someone ready to engage with you. Definitely doesn't change it, except knowing you're not alone which can feel like a big deal.

CroftonWillow · 24/04/2024 14:24

It's not just April though, it's nearly May. It is ridiculous weather for this time of year.
