Our neighbour (in the flat below) has asked we stop talking at 9:45pm at night?

We live in a shared townhouse and the couple downstairs have asked that my partner & I stop talking at 9:45 pm in the evening because they can hear us? We have only been living here for 1 week and get the kids to bed early, we are then woken up by them below speaking at 6am. AIBU?

Nope tell the crazies where to go.

Pipeskeepleaking · 22/04/2024 16:33

ha! they are mad!

Princesspotatopie · 22/04/2024 16:33

No if you're talking normally then of course you're not.

Pigeonqueen · 22/04/2024 16:34

Unless you’re literally the loudest people on earth that’s ridiculous. They need to get earplugs if they’re that noise sensitive.

LauderSyme · 22/04/2024 16:36

Hahahahahahaha. Nope.

Insane entitlement to think they can ask this of you! Suggest to them you all look into sound proofing options.

WaitingforCheese · 22/04/2024 16:36

They’re mad. I’d be tempted to make some mental list of when you can hear them. 6am-7am etc. fight crazy with crazy

PotOfViolas · 22/04/2024 16:36

Is it a town house converted into separate flats or a house share? It sounds like the noise insulation is the problem. I'm guessing if they're up at 6 they go to bed about 9.45 and are disturbed.

TheValueOfEverything · 22/04/2024 16:36

Are they Swiss?

BMW6 · 22/04/2024 16:37

Tell them to buy earplugs.

Singleandproud · 22/04/2024 16:37

Have you moved in properly with plenty of soft furnishings absorbing the sound? If not once you've got pillows, rugs etc then it won't be as much of an issue.

Littlefish · 22/04/2024 16:39

That's hilarious!

However, do you have carpets with good underlay?

They are clearly being unreasonable, but the sound carry must be awful between the flats if you can both hear each other talking.

ToxicChristmas · 22/04/2024 16:39

Absolutely ridiculous.
The soundproofing sounds awful though (as is often the case in modern conversions).
Ignore and live your life as normal. I wouldn't be ceasing conversation at 9.45pm, I'm not even anywhere near bed at that time personally. I wouldn't be battering about with a hoover or doing DIY, but I would be chatting with DH and watching TV.

Applescruffle · 22/04/2024 16:40

"stop talking" 😂
Not "stop using the washing machine" or "stop your dog barking" or "turn the TV down"they want you not to speak to each other. They actually said that. In real life. Out loud 😂

Can you imagine?

"Quick, darling, speak quicker! it's 9:44!"

And how did that come up with 9.45? Why so specific? Why not 10?

Pepsiisbetterthancoke · 22/04/2024 16:48

“Ok we will but we need you to not talk at 6am. Deal??”

I am an early bird but even I think talking at 6am is much more antisocial than 9.45

OhmygodDont · 22/04/2024 16:54

Haha they are crazy.

I’ll stop talking after 9:45pm as long as you don’t talk before 9:45am 😉

lateatwork · 22/04/2024 16:58

Wow. I'd start looking for somewhere else. If you can both hear each other, and it already is annoying them, this won't end well.

MissScarletInTheBallroom · 22/04/2024 17:01

If they can hear you and you can hear them and no one is screeching, you have a noise insulation problem which you should work together to address. In the meantime, you could agree to keep your noise down after 10pm provided they keep theirs down until 7am?

Exactly this 😂

LakieLady · 22/04/2024 17:17

YANBU, OP. Your neighbours, otoh, are barking.

9.45 is bloody early to complain about any noise other than raging loud music or noisy DIY, but complaining about normal volume speech at any time is pretty damn weird.

They'll be asking you not to run water or flush the lav next if you give in to this.

GalileoHumpkins · 22/04/2024 17:22

I agree with them, any noise after 9.45 is extremely antisocial and annoying. Could you not text each other instead of talking?

EmmaEmerald · 22/04/2024 17:23

Shared house? Not an actual conversion?

if you are house sharing, then a chat is needed, surely?

Seriously?? If someone tried asking me not to talk to my husband at any hour and text him instead they'd get a very dusty answer. There's being considerate/a good neighbour and there's being completely bonkers

Are you taking the piss? You want them to sit next to eachother and text instead of speaking?

Anyway, ignoring that utter madness. Tell them no problem, as long as they don't speak until after 7:52am.

LaMariposa · 22/04/2024 17:44

Can you stop talking and start moaning/bouncing on the bed instead? With a few orgasmic noises chucked in.

🤣
