Radical Feminsts

AIBU in noticing a increase in radical feminism on MN?

I'm not talking regular old feminism where equal rights are the goal, I'm sure we can all agree on that being important.

But there is a level of extremism emerging that goes from dizzying entitlement to outright man hating.

What gives?

Radical feminism was big in the 80s and now seems rather conservative imo. Gender essentialism, anti trans, the idea that piv sex is always oppressive and kinks require psychological treatment, often denying their real hetero sexuality and promoting political lesbianism instead (while sleeping with "their Nigel" on the down low..) Plus the negation of class or other economic factors in their analysis of women's oppression, so it only served the interests of middle class women who then blamed men wholly as a class for patriarchal oppression. They also worked with anti-abortion Christians against porn, which seemed like the most short sighted and off-putting alliance you could imagine.

I do see a lot of inclinations towards radical feminism on MN but not really in real life.

Gender essentialism?

fedupandstuck · 19/04/2024 16:39

@Begsthequestion no need to "defend" radical feminism against a post that is a deliberate attempt to misrepresent and undermine. Best left well alone and indeed people can read up on it if they like and decide for themselves if your characterisation holds water.

TheShellBeach · 19/04/2024 16:40

.........the idea that PIV sex is always oppressive

What?

Sure, you can shirk political discourse, and talk about chocolate instead. I'm happy to give my view either way.

What?

She is confusing lesbian separatists with radical feminists. On purpose I imagine.

Examples of man hating on MN:

'I don't like men either, and I find this quite hard to reconcile with my conscience, because I have a son who I adore, and I'd cut off any man that said he "didn't like women" - it would be the biggest red flag ever to me, so I don't know why I hate sexism so much but am fine with Misandry'

'They're only any good for shagging really. Warmer than a vibrator. I prefer the company of women, prefer working with women, and most definitely prefer living with women.'

'I don’t like men, even though I’m married to one. I find them pathetically base, like they’re somehow less evolved than us. I don’t like feeling that way, because I know it’s not quite fair, especially now that I have a son, but I don’t know how to overcome it.AllI can do is try not to show it.'

More to follow, I'm just nipping out.

This has nothing to do with radical feminism.

CookieCrumbles23 · 19/04/2024 16:45

After reading the thread title, I entered assuming I’d see some solid examples of ‘radical feminism’, perhaps some research literature or a collection
of stories recently in the news supporting OPs claim.

Instead, I see 3 copy and pasted examples from Mumsnet and a lot of talk about chocolate. (Crunchies are the best!).

Now I’m just hungry.

Screamingabdabz · 19/04/2024 16:47

Begsthequestion · 19/04/2024 16:32

No, radical feminism is a specific strain of feminism with its own beliefs. It doesn't just mean "very feminist".

Ah cool ok. I’ll stick to identifying myself as a raging feminist then (to hide my general ignorance of the different categories).

Goes off to Google…

fedupandstuck · 19/04/2024 16:47

I'm partial to a Dime (Daim!) bar, personally. Armadillos!

You could be raging and radical. Nice bit of alliteration that.

Can I add a Yorkie bar to my order please?

i often eat a yorkie bar, does that make me a radical feminist?

I also may have given the man who looked young enough to still be in utero the sorry shrug for trying to mansplain my car repairs to me the other day.

take me away in chains.....

They've stopped making them.

Gender essentialism?

Odd one because more feminists I know and have known in my 40+ years of activism consider gender a social construct - but they do tend to acknowledge biological reality.

Also, as a socialist feminist I have always considered class as an issue - along with Race, disability, sexuality, and other issues as essential when considering women's lived experiences nationally and globally

I'm not really seeing anything I have encountered or studied in your post except the PIV idea which is not mainstream however most of us would acknowledge that PIV sex can be abusive, used as a weapon of war, it ranges from acts of rape right up to women, like many who post here, who engage in it to shut up their angry and manipulative partners. This is why feminists, like my self, have been engaged in projects focused on teaching young people the complexities around consent.

Theuglynaillady · 19/04/2024 16:49

The bags of mini dime you get in IKEA are the best.

I spotted a KitKat cereal the other day. A cereal! Based on a chocolate bar! Disgraceful.

Obviously THE WORK OF A MAN, because every man is a monster.
Unless you like the sound of KitKat cereal, in which case, clearly invented by a woman.

(BTW - I'm joking. It's a scary state of affairs indeed that I need to point that out).
(Not joking about the KitKat cereal though)
