Liz Truss - what's going on there?

Just watched her recent interview with Chris Mason on Newscast. Something is most definitely 'off.' Not just what she says, but her hand and facial expressions are peculiar - as if she's possibly medicated or drunk? She is in total denial - no surprise there - but just so odd. It's actually quite disturbing to watch. AIBU?

She sounds desperate to me. Sales of her book depend on publicity and she’s raising the profile by making the most outrageous statements she possibly can.

This is what I thought too. Also, presumably she got support from the 1922 as they thought she would be easier to manipulate?

TTPD · 16/04/2024 09:10

I read something where someone described her as having the exact opposite of imposter syndrome, which I think is quite accurate.

MotherofPearl · 16/04/2024 09:16

I think most people who failed so spectacularly and publicly in their jobs would be pretty embarrassed, but Truss just brazens it out.

If I were her, I'd have been inclined to change my identity, get plastic surgery and move continents after what happened, but for reasons unknown she keeps herself in the public spotlight and is deluded enough to imagine that anyone wants to hear a single thing she has to say.

Havanananana · 16/04/2024 09:17

"Probably she'll get a show on GB News."

"Chickenfeed" - as a different ex-PM once described the fee for his incoherent media scribblings.

She's going all out for the big pay packet - a deal with Fox News in the USA (and possibly also Australia) where she can spout nonsense safe in the knowledge that she'll never have to accept any responsibility for her unhinged mutterings and bone-headed lack of insight or empathy. The American Right love her Oxford credentials and eccentric British accent and body language. She just has to master the trick of saying the same thing regardless of the audience (similar to Johnson's "Boris the Bumbling Clown" act) and she's got it made. Farage must be purple with rage - he probably thought that if Trump wins next time, this was going to be his gig.

Hopefully this will keep her far away from the UK and prevent her from having another position of power. Incompetent people are a danger in any setting - but unconsciously incompetent people are even more dangerous.

Liz Truss
Mel B
Both suddenly everywhere! Perhaps they both have the same agent!

Coffeeismysaviour · 16/04/2024 09:23

She's a sleeper agent for the Liberal Democrats. I started a thread on it before seeing that this one was already in full swing Grin.

I have no more confidence in her than anyone else and am amazed she was elected as an MP let alone PM....but part of me sort of admires the brazenness to keep showing up. (And not apologise or accept any short-comings)

I do think it would be beyond embarrassing for her family though

PTSDBarbiegirl · 16/04/2024 09:24

She blinks but only the bottom lip and jaw actually move, rest of face immobile. She exhudes arrogance.

😅 this made me giggle - completely agree. It’s annoying that she’s a woman. I wonder if a man version of Truss would have styled it out for longer and refused to step down.

She sounds desperate to me. Sales of her book depend on publicity and she’s raising the profile by making the most outrageous statements she possibly can.

Her book is published by a company owned by billionaire Tory-donor Lord Ashcroft. She will probably have been guaranteed a juicy fee regardless of how many copies the book sells.

Ashcroft donates millions to the Conservatives - a fee of, say, a hundred thousand quid to Truss has bought far more publicity for the right wing than any of his donations ever can.

Sparklybanana · 16/04/2024 09:27

I'm actually a little impressed that she can not only take the whole country laughing at her for being so rubbish and then coming back for round 2! Round 2 seems to be 'I'm very bitter about these groups who stopped me from totalling the country so I'm going to say they should disbanded". Also ' the world was safer under Donald trump'.? Yes - if you're a rich, white American man....
I just hope she's just saying these things to sell her book.

BIossomtoes · 16/04/2024 09:33

The book is published by Biteback Publishing, a company owned by billionaire Lord Ashcroft, who also happens to be one of the largest donors (we're talking millions) to the Conservative party, despite not living in the UK and preferring to live in an off-shore tax haven.

Oh, interesting. The same Lord Ashcroft who accused Angela Rayner of evading £1500 in capital gains tax. They’re so fucking transparent, they must think we’re stupid.

Mirabai · 16/04/2024 09:33

TTPD · 16/04/2024 07:23

I've just seen a clip from that interview and she does genuinely seem a little bit drunk.

Looks like business as usual to me.

Jovacknockowitch · 16/04/2024 09:44

They’re so fucking transparent, they must think we’re stupid. Well 14 years of people voting to be shafted and ruin the country seems to suggest they might have a point - although an electoral system that didn't award power to the crew most people didn't vote for would help of course.

TomeTome · 16/04/2024 07:36

I think we should all feel lucky she’s no longer in power but question how and why she was there in the first place.

Ask the Tory party members who voted for her over Sunak. Whatever his problems, he's way better than her (it's a low bar to be sure).

Thatusernamewastaken · 16/04/2024 10:00

Arguably the most incompetent PM of all time and also just a truly awful person. Labour must love her getting another parade about.

WitchesWithKnivesInTheirFeet · 16/04/2024 10:03

Jovacknockowitch · 16/04/2024 08:13

That's very simple - Tory racists didn't want Rishi until they had no choice.

I honestly don't think this was about race at all. The favourite among Tory party members was Kemi Badenoch, but she didn't make it through the MP voting stages.

User135644 · 16/04/2024 10:06

She's bonkers. She was also a Lib Dem and a Remainer so she'll jump on any bandwagon.

She destroyed the economy in 40 days out of pure arrogance and ignorance. If it was a Labour PM you'd hear nothing else for the next 50 years.

BIossomtoes · 16/04/2024 10:06

Not true. The favourite among the membership was Mordaunt and a lot of them were severely pissed off when she was excluded.

reallyworriedjobhunter · 16/04/2024 10:07

Reminds me of her cheese speech.

She was also saying that the new rules restricting smoking were wrong and that people should be free to smoke. Utter Trump-y weirdo.

BIossomtoes · 16/04/2024 10:06

Mordaunt would have won with the members. The Mail helped fix it by running negative stories about her to keep her off the ballot because they -and the lunatic right wing media - wanted their 'true Tory budget' and useful idiot in Truss.

Tlolljs · 16/04/2024 10:09

TTPD · 16/04/2024 07:44

It's sad she was the Queen's very last PM when she had served with 14 others before who were much more competent than she turned out to be across all the political parties.

The only thing about that that makes me smile is that she gave Penny Mordaunt whatever position it was that meant she had to hold that sword, and be part of the other official stuff.
If the queen had died a few weeks earlier, Jacob Rees-Mogg was in that position, and would have been the one to do that, and I love that fact that you just know he's fuming that it wasn't him.

Also Boris Johnson would have loved to be prime minister when Her Majesty passed away. Just for his name to be in the record in some way.

gingercat02 · 16/04/2024 10:12

I really think she believes that if the Tories crash and burn as predicted at the GE,she is the person to unite them and bring them back to true Conservative Values.
I think it has been said she sees herself as the the new Thatcher.

I personally think she is mentally unwell, but maybe that's because I am about as far from her political position as possible.

Sahara123 · 16/04/2024 10:14

Awful woman. I can’t believe she’s got the brass neck to appear in public again, let alone write a book. Surely it can’t be for the money , she gets money for life for being PM which is bad enough. So self absorbed. Is Kwasi Karteng still around ? He seems to have had the decency to lay low after trashing the economy
