Liz Truss - what's going on there?

Just watched her recent interview with Chris Mason on Newscast. Something is most definitely 'off.' Not just what she says, but her hand and facial expressions are peculiar - as if she's possibly medicated or drunk? She is in total denial - no surprise there - but just so odd. It's actually quite disturbing to watch. AIBU?

She also thinks that the OBR should be ditched and that the Bank of England has too much power over money. She says there’s too many officials with too much power and no accountability. She wants politicians more in charge.
People like her apparently, with no clue how it works but having free rein to do what they want, totally driven by party politics and unfettered by people who do actually understand.

And get rid of the Supreme Court and leave the ECHR.

Essentially she’s the ultimate narcissist- get rid of anyone who opposes my ideas. Next step dictatorship!

Please don’t buy her book.
I can’t tell you how much that woman cost us!! We had just put our house for sale when she drove up interest rates. It was a total nightmare.

Indeed she fucked up my Pension too.

In that respect she is doing the role of the cosplay Thatcher she's always aspired to. Thatcher loved democracy and the rule of law as long as they went along with her.

Havanananana · 16/04/2024 08:17

@the80sweregreat However, she still won and it makes me wonder how. Why didn't they vote for Rishi Sunak back then?

The Conservative MPs actually voted for Sunak, but when the vote was put to the membership, they preferred Truss. They liked her Thatcher tribute act - and there's something about Sunak that they didn't like... (The membership were not offered the chance to vote on Truss' successor as there was only one candidate, Sunak).

For all that there are many who think that Conservative MPs are a bunch of dimwitted nodding dogs, even they had the insight and first-hand knowledge of Truss to see that she'd be a disaster as PM.

Don't know about meds but I heard she's broke, stony broke, hence the book.

Hard to see how, she is getting paid vast sums (by most people's standards) at our expense. If she can't survive on that she needs to cut her cloth accordingly like the rest of us have had to due to her fuck up.

JoJothegerbil · 16/04/2024 08:18

I didn't watch, but listened to the podcast instead. The woman is a lunatic, a dangerous lunatic, and should never be let anywhere near power ever again. There's definitely something slightly unhinged about her. Absolutely no self-awareness or humility. Classic narcissist.

Bruisername · 16/04/2024 08:18

She is trying to position herself for the American market - that’s where the money is if she can get on the big speaker tours and become a pundit on Fox News

Rishi was too moderate - the right of the party were on a high and thought they could use her to get their way on things but it backfired and they had to retreat with tail between legs and accept sunak

unfortunately the modern generation of politicians are poor - of all parties tbh. Voting should never be about picking the least worse option!!

If she's broke on an MP's salary of >£90k, plus expenses, it's no wonder that she let Kwarteng crash the economy, she plainly hasn't got a clue about money.

She's entitled to a £115k pa pension as a former PM, too, but I don't know if she can get that while she's still an MP.

Whenwillitgetwarm · 16/04/2024 08:24

Jovacknockowitch · 16/04/2024 08:13

That's very simple - Tory racists didn't want Rishi until they had no choice.

I think it was probably a bit more nuanced than just race. I think some members may have been suspicious of him as he came out of nowhere and was parachuted into a safe seat because his father in law knew David Cameron. Also despite him having a slick PR machine at the time, he was a shit chancellor. Yes Truss cost us a lot of money but Sunak wasted and wrote off billions in Covid debts including fraud and PPE.

Sunak has also cost us unbelievable amounts. It’s been brushed under the carpet though because Truss’s losses were quicker and more obvious, but the pound was tanking and inflation and debt were shooting yo before she became PM. It started under Sunak being chancellor.

During the contest, Truss was singing music to Tory ears about reigniting our economy. Many of them thought it was the second coming of Thatcher. Remember they were all praising her budget before it went wrong, saying it was a ‘true Conservative budget’.

Changedforthisthread1 · 16/04/2024 08:24

Lizz Truss hands and facial expressions have always been a bit, well, odd.

When I need a laugh or cheering up, I find watching her "Cheese" speech very entertaining 😅

Hard to believe. She gets £91,346 as an MP, plus expenses to cover her office and the rental of accommodation in London. She gets an additional £115,000 a year for life as a former Prime Minister. Perhaps at the next GE her constituants can ask themselves when they last saw her in Swaffham or Thetford, and what exactly she has done to improve their lot.

On top of this, there are her appearance fees for speaking at the conferences of various right-wing organisations in the UK and not least in the US, which look like being her main grift.

The book is published by Biteback Publishing, a company owned by billionaire Lord Ashcroft, who also happens to be one of the largest donors (we're talking millions) to the Conservative party, despite not living in the UK and preferring to live in an off-shore tax haven. Even if nobody buys a single copy, Truss is no doubt going to be well paid for her thoughts.

Medschoolmum · 16/04/2024 08:43

I think they need to stop interviewing her tbh. The woman is clearly very unwell, and while the interviews are strangely compelling to watch, they're essentially exploiting her mental health problems to make interesting TV. It's like a modern day freak show.

I feel terribly sorry for her teenage children having to watch her publicly unravelling. It must be devastating.

You know those loons who think the royals are lizards? Makes me think of that. Very bad actor.

Havanananana · 16/04/2024 08:48

"I feel terribly sorry for her teenage children having to watch her publicly unravelling."

She was pro-European in the run-up to the Referendum, expressing concerns about the future that her daughters faced; “I don’t want my daughters to grow up in a world where they need a visa or permit to work in Europe; or where they are hampered from growing a business because of extortionate call costs and barriers to trade.”
“Every parent wants their children to grow up in a healthy environment with clean water, fresh air and thriving natural wonders. Being part of the EU helps protect these precious resources and spaces.”

How does she explain her post-Brexit stance to her daughters? How does she explain her journey from Socialist to extreme right-wing PopCon, via the LibDems and the One-Nation Conservatives?

How can someone expect be taken seriously when they change their views according to which way they think the wind is blowing? Or is it all just one big grift?

Undertherockpool · 16/04/2024 08:50

a lot of money was spent on training her to change her voice etc to make her more priministerial though, that’s why she comes across in a very unnatural way.

She has been paid a lot of money from people such as the ERG to promote (and indeed try out) their ideas to give them the opportunity to make money on the inevitable market crashes etc. she is now being paid a lot of money to try to make out Donald Trump and Nigel Farage are reasonable people when obviously they are extremely nasty pieces of work. She is nothing more than a pathetic puppet.

TorroFerney · 16/04/2024 08:52

BatteryPoweredPeacock · 16/04/2024 07:10

Wasn't she always like that?

When she was running for PM she had that same, drunk, demeanour.

Yes it’s just her. I was just saying to other half I’d get her book if it revealed how she has the mental fortitude to not have just taken to her bed permanently after the prime minister debacle or to have at least changed careers.

i don’t like her but I’d love just an ounce of her self confidence/belief.

Jovacknockowitch · 16/04/2024 08:52

What I find alarming is the fact that she got a degree from Oxford (although she apparently got in after making a complaint).

I've just seen a clip from that interview and she does genuinely seem a little bit drunk.

Heavy blinking and darting eyes - she’s lying and scrambling for an answer. She’s clearly had body language lessons but is terrible at using them, so comes across as even more untrustworthy.

She was like that during the leadership race though. We used to watch her and be incredulous such a lightweight was in government. We couldn’t believe it when she won.

And it is worth saying that the Conservative MPs didn’t elect her ( they knew her), the membership did. We all know why the membership didn’t vote Sunak.

I do wonder at the news agenda that is giving her so much coverage now though. Are they going to try to blame all the Tory disasters on her as an unhinged outlier? Or are they going to go for a bring back Boris, he was better than Truss approach?

TamarindJelly · 16/04/2024 08:53

It's sad she was the Queen's very last PM when she had served with 14 others before who were much more competent than she turned out to be across all the political parties.

The only thing about that that makes me smile is that she gave Penny Mordaunt whatever position it was that meant she had to hold that sword, and be part of the other official stuff.
If the queen had died a few weeks earlier, Jacob Rees-Mogg was in that position, and would have been the one to do that, and I love that fact that you just know he's fuming that it wasn't him.

Although I'm not sure Jacob Rees-Mogg would have had the upper body strength for that sword...

As I recall, Sunak was rejected as “more of the same”. Coming down off Boris, the commoners wanted things to be shaken up. Sunak was the ‘safe pair of hands’ and so rejected.

I also recall the papers trying to whip up anti Sunak sentiment at the time - ostensibly because he’s rich but there was an undercurrent of ‘he’s Indian’. However, none of the real people I met cared about ethnicity. They simple didn’t want more grey men in suits.

100% agree.

The cheese speech!

Yes, it's like she's had some training about how to come across as more 'primeministerial', but it doesn't work.

I agree she is the definition of narcissist. I suppose, at this point, she has nothing to lose. She may as well go all out. The more controversial she is, the more publicity there will be for her book.

Probably she'll get a show on GB News.

She’s what true believer libertarianism looks like. She’s the front for all of those American think tanks who’ve been successfully destroying our country since the Brexit vote.

Plus she’s cray cray.

Except they're not libertarians though are they, far from it. Ask them about abortion, marijuana or immigration.

Didn't Truss vote Remain? How does she explain that?
