Prostitute checked into our hotel!

Ok, so away in London for a couple of days with DH and DD (10). We were staying in a 4* Hotel which is part of a large chain of hotels, not a small independent. We went to reception about 10.30 on the 2nd morning and was met with a lady (who was very obviously a prostitute) being told her room would be ready in 5 mins and her handing over £100 in cash to the receptionist. The hotel is £250+ a night and check in is 3pm!

AIBU to this this made the hotel feel a bit icky and sleazy after I saw that? Husband and I spoke briefly when DD wasn’t listening and he said “well they have to work somewhere!”. Not sure if I’m turning into a prude in my old age, but I really didn’t feel comfortable in the hotel after I saw that. I’m sure for her, it was a safe and comfortable place to work and I know this goes on in hotels, I suppose just seeing it in broad daylight shocked me a bit. We knew what she was there for, the receptionist knew what she was there for, the man behind us in the queue knew what she was there for, maybe I thought she and the hotel should have been a bit more discreet if they allow this to go on in their hotel, especially when it’s a family friendly hotel and there were a lot of children around?

Did her T-shirt say 'top prozzie' on it?

Ethylred · 13/04/2024 17:42

OP, please tell us more about how to look obviously like a prostitute.

ShortLivedComment · 13/04/2024 17:43

It's hilarious that so many posters don't think you can spot some people who are prostitutes. They must lead very sheltered lives. You obviously can't spot all prostitutes but with some it's obvious.

a222 · 13/04/2024 17:43

did she have a tshirt on saying ‘i am a prostitute’ ?

lol! didn’t even read ur comment and i’ve just commented something similar 😂

Scottishskifun · 13/04/2024 17:44

Could have been only fans work, a photoshoot or anything.
I think your a bit naive if you think this doesn't occur in high end hotels I mean by the nature of a good number of people who stay at them it's more likely not less as discretion from staff is the key!

The only time I have been a bit taken a back by sex workers was on holiday and a open discussion on prices with some Americans and the different packages but only because I was trying to enjoy my lunch and didn't want the conversation right next to me!

Ok, maybe I am sheltered, but seriously how do you know if they are or not?
Is it the way they dress?
Act?
What?

ShortLivedComment · 13/04/2024 17:45

It seems that a L ot of posters aren't that bothered about the sex trade. Even though many women are exploited and even coerced into it.

I'm sure there are plenty of happy prostitues about but they are also plenty who are forced into it. Good luck if you can tell the difference.

Got to say this thread is HILARIOUS

NoTouch · 13/04/2024 17:46

I never actually thought about sex workers hours of work. I would have thought it would be more a back/night shift type of role so hiring a room in the morning for a few hours would not make me jump to that conclusion.

Does sound more like an affair type scenario. Or perhaps she is using the hotel to get ready for a night out? Or somewhere to relax for a few hours before heading somewhere else. Perhaps she just prefer cash or is hiding her spending from a financially abusive partner?

There are so many possible scenarios and you have jumped to your own seedy conclusions, but whatever it is, unless she is shagging clients in the corridors it is none of your business.

YANBU

She shouldn't be there!! Families too! She should go somewhere secluded and risk being murdered so you don't feel uncomfortable

🙃

This 100%

Go put yourself in even more harms way, you wretched woman.

Heartbreaking that these posts exist.

God MN is exhausting sometimes. I can perfectly well understand how you would know she was a prostitute OP. Not sure why everyone is being so difficult about it. I can't decide whether it would bother me or not though...I think probably not unless I could hear it in the next room.

Genuinely how?

Hoglet70 · 13/04/2024 17:46

I've hired a hotel room in the day. I am most definitely NOT a sex worker.

Lifeomars · 13/04/2024 17:47

How is someone very obviously a prostitute, did she have a red light attached to her head?

CoffeeCantata · 13/04/2024 17:48

I would hate that, OP. In the back of my mind I know this must happen in many hotels, but it would make me really queasy.

But I think I've been to a hotel about 4 times in my long life - I really don't like them. As someone so charmingly put it upthread, the room will likely be covered in semen anyway. The more you think about it, the more dodgy the whole hotel experience actually is, but we're lulled into NOT thinking about it.

GrumpyL · 13/04/2024 15:21

She paid £100 as she counted it out in £10 notes as she gave it to the receptionist. I don’t want to get into a discussion about you shouldn’t judge a women by what she was wearing etc, let’s just say it was very obvious that she was a prostitute hiring room for the day. This was 10.30am in the morning, not the night.

But you still havnt told us HOW it was very obvious how can you know just by what someone looks like ?

tellmewhenthespaceshiplandscoz · 13/04/2024 17:48

Am now wondering whether I have ever gone out looking "obviously " like a sex worker. I do like a bit of leopard print and have often wore fishnets?!!

5128gap · 13/04/2024 17:49

Firstly, there is no way on this earth you could know this woman's occupation for certain. However, if you guessed correctly, she would be just one amongst many women having sex in the hotel rooms, some with partners, some with strangers, some with other people's partners. The only difference being, she may have been paid for it. All sorts of things go on in hotel bedrooms and if you're squeamish its probably best to keep your eyes and ears to yourself, mind your business and not dwell too much on what other customers may be up to.

Barney16 · 13/04/2024 17:50

£100 is the day rate, the rate for during the day. It's very common. She's not actually shagging someone in the foyer so I would try and forget about it.

Well, it occurs to me that the "obvious" ones are probably going to be the ones who are touting on spec.

Woman who's checking into a hotel room by herself has presumably already got a client, so doesn't need to advertise.

Pedallleur · 13/04/2024 17:52

Do people think prostitution doesn't go on in e.g. The Dorchester or The Savoy? Anywhere there are men or women with money any vice you care to name will follow. But you can be sure that the more the client is spending with the hotel the more the hotel will condone it. If someone rents out a suite for a month and fills it with call girls, drugs and champagne the hotel won't mind as long as other guests aren't complaining and/or the police are not involved.

Did she have a face like a plasterer's radio OP? 😳

Brilliant! 😂

Dancingonthemoonlight · 13/04/2024 17:55

I don't see the big deal tbh if you knew what most couples got up to in a hotel room when they're away from their usual responsibilities you'd probably never sleep in one again 😂

Lifeomars · 13/04/2024 17:55

BettyShagter · 13/04/2024 16:52

Was this an IBIS hotel?

I use them quite a lot for work and the one in Barking is full of prostitutes.

But they keep themselves to themselves and neither they nor their clients ever cause any problems that I've witnessed.

As for there being 'children around', I don't see what difference that makes? It's not as if they're in the room with them.

But most 'day rate' hotels seem to attract them.

indeed, and so what if there are children around, hopefully no parent is going to say to a child "see that lady over there, I think she is a prostitute" and then go on to explain what a prostitute does.

Many women (and men) are coerced and exploited in just about every sector imaginable; agriculture, manufacturing, hospitality for starters.

The difference is that nobody seems to be so bothered about any of those that they try to ban the entire shebang, rather than concentrate time and resources on properly enforcing the laws that already exist to prevent abuse and exploitation, supporting those who need support and leaving everybody else alone to get on with it.
