Prostitute checked into our hotel!

Ok, so away in London for a couple of days with DH and DD (10). We were staying in a 4* Hotel which is part of a large chain of hotels, not a small independent. We went to reception about 10.30 on the 2nd morning and was met with a lady (who was very obviously a prostitute) being told her room would be ready in 5 mins and her handing over £100 in cash to the receptionist. The hotel is £250+ a night and check in is 3pm!

AIBU to this this made the hotel feel a bit icky and sleazy after I saw that? Husband and I spoke briefly when DD wasn’t listening and he said “well they have to work somewhere!”. Not sure if I’m turning into a prude in my old age, but I really didn’t feel comfortable in the hotel after I saw that. I’m sure for her, it was a safe and comfortable place to work and I know this goes on in hotels, I suppose just seeing it in broad daylight shocked me a bit. We knew what she was there for, the receptionist knew what she was there for, the man behind us in the queue knew what she was there for, maybe I thought she and the hotel should have been a bit more discreet if they allow this to go on in their hotel, especially when it’s a family friendly hotel and there were a lot of children around?

Have you got any idea how many women are forced into prostitution? Have you ever spoken to a victim of trafficking? What they have inflicted on them many times a day is always rape. Always. And let’s not pretend that the men who pay to rape them don’t know about it. Every adult in the UK knows about victims of trafficking being forced to work as prostitutes. They know that there is a very large chance that they are paying to rape someone. There’s an equally large chance that they are taking advantage of a woman who finds herself in a desperate situation and has no other option. They know this and they simply don’t care.

Personally, I think the OP is being insane. But don’t make out like these men are morally sound, thoroughly decent blokes. Because they aren’t.

Our children are adults. They are his next of kin and have had to deal with police/ coroner/ probate/ funeral. They have phoned/ come round to their mum ( me) for cups of tea a lot when they have needed to off load what they have been told by the police/ found out from dealing with his affairs. Doesn't matter how old you are, sometimes you need your mum.

I use the term prostitute because I object to the term sex worker, which has been adopted for political reasons to make an inherently exploitative business seem mainstream. Trafficking and abuse of women iin prostitution is common. There has been research in countries were prostitution is fully legalized and ‘above board’ which has shown that the prostituted women there have as high, or higher, levels of disassociation from their own bodies than child sex abuse victims. And even for the small minority of high earning prostitutes who can choose a small number of clients they are safe with and freely do choose that work, I still object to prostitution as I have a strong principled objection to a society where men are able to buy intimate access to women’s bodies. That is something that I strongly believe no one should be able to purchase.

So away with your sneering about old fashioned. I’d rather have looked into and thought about issues and make my decisions based on that, rather than on what’s ‘fashionable’.

The receptionist is obviously letting the room out on the side. Report to management.
I would not be happy with my hotel being used as a brothel and she clearly wasn't being discreet.

People do all sorts of things in hotel rooms that we might not like to know about! Prostitution is probably one of the most mundane.

A few years ago my granddaughter was taking part in a beauty pageant in the the midlands.She went with her friend, who was not taking part, and as both girls were n their late teens I went with them mostly to keep an eye on what went on.
The pageant was taking place in a large hotel and need a two night stay.As the big hotel was fully booked for rooms we stayed in one in the grounds which was part of a budget hotel group.The receptionist on duty eyed us very suspiciously all the time,mostly when we came in at night and when leaving in the morning.In fact she almost fell off her chair craning her neck at night when we were going upstairs to see if we were sneaking men in.
We got the impression we were being watched all the time.There were families with young children staying, so I supposed they were being very careful.
The three of us had a good laugh about it on the way home. Especially myself who was in my early seventies being thought of as a lady of the night.

God MN is exhausting sometimes. I can perfectly well understand how you would know she was a prostitute OP. Not sure why everyone is being so difficult about it. I can't decide whether it would bother me or not though...I think probably not unless I could hear it in the next room.

People have noisy sex in hotels whether they're paying for it or not

It's quite common for rooms to be rented during the day for various reasons - sleeping between flights, for example.

You say she paid £100 for an expensive hotel, you can get deals last minute where you get a great reduction on rooms from certain sites, she could be there for a number of reasons.

You know in London, you are able to rent a “day room” - I have rented one out before as I needed a room to have some meetings in - just google London hotel day rooms and they have rooms at places like Hilton, Hyatt etc for day rental (eg 9-5pm). And just to clarify - my meetings were nothing dodgy!!

Yabu. You don’t know for certain she was a prostitue and even if she was it’s not like she invited you to watch. People have sex in hotel rooms every day, the exchanging of money shouldn’t make a difference.

That has to be one of the funniest statement's on Mumsnet ever. What do you think people do when they go on honeymoon to a hotel? Or are on holiday?

The issue has little to do with her being a sex worker, rather than the thought of it took the shine off your 4 hotel. I think it is far safer for her than a car, alley or seedy shthole. The fact there are kids about is by-the-by, unless she was turning a trick at reception, which she wasn't. AND, amongst all this, some guy is paying for her which is the worst thing, yet she is being shamed.

What a naive statement, life isn’t little woman, prostitutes look many different ways as do women who earn money other ways. Naive or ignorant.
