Prostitute checked into our hotel!

Ok, so away in London for a couple of days with DH and DD (10). We were staying in a 4* Hotel which is part of a large chain of hotels, not a small independent. We went to reception about 10.30 on the 2nd morning and was met with a lady (who was very obviously a prostitute) being told her room would be ready in 5 mins and her handing over £100 in cash to the receptionist. The hotel is £250+ a night and check in is 3pm!

AIBU to this this made the hotel feel a bit icky and sleazy after I saw that? Husband and I spoke briefly when DD wasn’t listening and he said “well they have to work somewhere!”. Not sure if I’m turning into a prude in my old age, but I really didn’t feel comfortable in the hotel after I saw that. I’m sure for her, it was a safe and comfortable place to work and I know this goes on in hotels, I suppose just seeing it in broad daylight shocked me a bit. We knew what she was there for, the receptionist knew what she was there for, the man behind us in the queue knew what she was there for, maybe I thought she and the hotel should have been a bit more discreet if they allow this to go on in their hotel, especially when it’s a family friendly hotel and there were a lot of children around?

How do you know she was a prostitute? Was she wearing a badge?

It's quite common for rooms to be rented during the day for various reasons - sleeping between flights, for example.

As a business man I stayed in lots of hotels...you know... You just know and no I didn't thanks....

That has to be one of the funniest statement's on Mumsnet ever. What do you think people do when they go on honeymoon to a hotel? Or are on holiday?

It was sarcasm. It was supposed to funny ha ha. It wasn't.

Sometimeswinning · 13/04/2024 22:16

She could be wearing a badge and posters would still be demanding how the op knew.

It’s like the Emperors new clothes on here sometimes! See it, know it but desperately deny it.

Loubelle70 · 13/04/2024 22:19

I don't know many prostitutes that would pay 100 for a room tbh...its the client that will book or pay. Shes not gonna risk being outta pocket of 100. Odd story

Slav80 · 13/04/2024 22:20

You sound like a small town girl going to The Big City for the first time OP, perhaps stay closer to home, or even better, at home next time (see the assumptions I’ve made in this post to answer your post..)

WildBear · 13/04/2024 22:20

Maybe if she checked into your room it would warrant a post

LlynTegid · 13/04/2024 22:21

Check the process for early check in at the hotel. £100 for an early check in given £250 a night seems reasonable.

A few years ago I met someone who worked as a night porter. He mentioned visits for a short period by women to the rooms that men were staying in, and how they tried to avoid being seen by reception. Women not arriving with the man whose room it was. More likely to be prostitutes.

If you are that concerned OP, raise it with the hotel.

Well I'm glad that a sex worker had somewhere safe to work. Much better than being in the streets.

I see tons of posts on MN about how they only stay with the DH for the house/money. I don't see how sex work is any different.

YES!!! Absolutely true.
If you are with the man for the lifestyle, it's like being a sex worker by another name.

IWantOut29 · 13/04/2024 22:24

Hotels dont tend to allow prostitutes in, it doesnt look good for business 😂 and most hotels dont let random members of the public walk in and go into other peoples rooms. Usually they also have to be a paying guest

Maybe she paid £150 on her card and the rest in cash?

You sound foul

Yes, "I married well" is often trotted out.

By that, they mean someone with money.

friendlycat · 13/04/2024 22:29

I think you will find this happens all over the world.

High end hotels in London will be used to this. Concierge services will also arrange suitable “escorts” for their valued clients if requested.

friendlycat · 13/04/2024 22:31

Sorry but also to add £250 a night hotel in London (if central) is quite cheap.

AnxiousRabbit · 13/04/2024 22:32

You got a 4star !!! Hotel in London for £250???

OkPedro · 13/04/2024 22:34

FoleyHuck · 13/04/2024 16:04

What? Why the stare? Why did you feel bad?

You've missed some info here. Were they in the next room and were you banging up against the connecting door all night? Did you ride him into the breakfast room? Did you both come down naked and smeared in sweat and other... fluids?

Otherwise what are you on about?

"Did you ride him into breakfast" 🤣🤣🤣

This lovely woman definitely would disagree that sex work is rape.

Good for her if that’s the way she has chosen to make her money. I’m certainly not judging her for it and I hope she managed to stay safe without any dreadful experiences. But let’s not kid ourselves that she’s representing the majority of women doing this.

Friday night is actually one of the cheaper nights of the week as lots of people just want Saturday. Sunday cheapest.

Nightone · 13/04/2024 22:46

Can she really make money if she has to spend £100 on a hotel room? (I have no idea how much is typically charged).

WhatTheFuk · 13/04/2024 22:58

Shock. Horror ... people have sex in hotel rooms???

Worse yet, they stay (and probably have sex) with cheating DH, sometimes knowing he is in love with another woman. This is in 21st century West European country.

AnxiousRabbit · 13/04/2024 23:16

I think that's what makes no sense
I don't know how these things work but
A sex worker who.works on the streets isn't going to pay £100 for few hours in a 4star hotel for clients....they will have cheaper places surely
And those working the more expensive and exclusive end of the scale wouldn't be counting out cash or dressed obviously????

PostItInABook · 13/04/2024 23:17

Unless she was giving a lap dance in the lobby, blowing a guy in the corridor or getting her baps out in the kids club the family friendly part is irrelevant.

hot2trotter · 13/04/2024 23:28

Get a life

Grimchmas · 13/04/2024 23:30

So what though?

Did your child know she was there to be paid to have sex?

How did your child know?
